When you pre-order is do you pay then or do you pay at the store on release day? I'm an authorized user on my dad's family plan and i'm 18 so i just want to make sure I didn't need a credit card on the release day to pay for it because i dont have one. If i need one then i'll just have it shipped here.

I am upgrading line 2 to an iphone 4 then having AT&T swap it to line 1. If I pre-order from Apple store and have it shipped to my house, should I activate the iphone 4 before going to the AT&T store to do the swap? Or should I activate at the AT&T store?

Just called at&t. They finally fixed my SS #... I think. Upgrade is still 02/20/11

They told me that my prorated ETF was $120. Would it be better to just cancel and then reenter the contract?

How much would the activation fee cost? vs upgrade fee? gah!

I've read that cancelling precludes you from signing a new contract for 90 days.

Best to add a line then cancel the current one, that way the 90 day rule really won't apply since you already have the new line ready to go

Ok. I am on a family plan. My brother lives across the state from me (6 hours). He is the account holder and I'm an authorized user.

Can I pre-order from apple or AT&T and have the phone shipped to my address or will it need to go to his address that is on file?

Wouldn't mind saving the trip to the nearest AT&T store if I can just wait at home. Thanks.

So when the iPhone is purchased on one line and swapped to another, will the original line it was purchased on be charged for the data plan ( whatever $25 or $15) ??

No, and if the data plan was added during the order, it can be removed as soon as the iPhone is swapped to a new line.

Hi All, okay so I knows this has been discussed pretty heavily but I've heard so many different things I just want to make sure I'm understanding things correctly.

Okay so: I have a family plan with a corporate FAN discount. I am doing an early upgrade from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4. As I understand it, if I go buy it at an Apple store, I could run into problems. If I buy it from an AT&T store, I should be fine. Now, my question is what if I preorder it at apple.com next week and have it SHIPPED to me. What would happen? Would the form just error out on me (because of the FAN discount)?

Basically, I don't want to go into ANY store. I just want to go to apple.com on the 15th, order my phone, and wait for it to arrive. Am I not going to be able to do that with an early upgrade and a FAN discount?

Thanks!

My account has a FAN discount applied and I didn't have any problems pre-ordering the iPhone 3GS thru apple.com and having it sent to me. I wouldn't expect that the iPhone 4 would be any different.

Whether you walk into an Apple Store, or visit the online store, the general process is the same. Apple gets some general AT&T info from you (telephone #, last four of SSN, billing zip code) and uses that information to query your AT&T account, which tells them at which price you're eligible to buy the iPhone for.

If you pre-order online from Apple.com, you'll know early on in the process if there's any problem.

All FAN issues were resolved long ago. You have nothing to worry about.

13. A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on XX/XX/XXXX. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please visit a participating iPhone sales location for pricing on this offer. What does this mean?
That's an early upgrade, which means you pay a bit more than the new customer/eligible people, but less than unsubsidized. That price is 399/499 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively

From what the AT&T rep told me, this isn't necessarily correct. If your upgrade date is anywhere in 2010, you're eligible for the full discount (only on iPhone 4) -- it may not necessarily be reflected in your upgrade date.

From the email I received:

We are making it even easier for more customers to take advantage of iPhone 4 and our powerful 3G network right now. New and qualified customers -- those existing customers who are "upgrade eligible" qualify for our best pricing on iPhone 4. But in addition, customers who become upgrade eligible anytime in 2010 can get our best pricing right now, no waiting! It does not matter what type of device you have. We do not change the upgrade dates, our system will allow the upgrade if the phone is the iPhone 4. You will be able to upgrade your line and get the iPhone 4; of course this requires a 2 year contract, plus an $18.00 upgrade fee. It does require a data plan as well.

Problem is, question 13 reflects early upgrade, not the full upgrade.

There has been so much conflicting advice regarding the FAN discount. Some people have said that having a FAN discount through their business (not the business paying for the entire phone) has caused problems when trying to upgrade and some say it should be fine. Does anyone know for sure? If there will be a problem I want to cancel my FAN before upgrading.

I called the business preimier line at AT&T and they told me that there wouldn't be a problem. Also learned I would get a discount on the Data plan as well as my normal discount on my voice plan. Best thing to do is Call AT&T. Number is 611. They will tell you for sure because FAN's are set up differently and discounts differ for each FAN.

I'm aware of the intent of question 13. I'm pointing out that just because you get the "A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on XX/XX/XXXX" message you STILL QUALIFY for the full discount on an iPhone 4 if the "XXXX" = 2010.

Right, sorry about that.

Edit: I'm still unsure on this. I've only seen a couple that had 2010 upgrde dates.

If Apple does the same thing as last year, you won't have to worry.

If you pre-order online to have it shipped to you, during the ordering process, it'll notify you if there are any problems.

If you reserve an iPhone for store pick-up, you'll have the option of doing the "Start at home" process, which speeds things up in the store by having you do a lot of your AT&T account stuff online, before you walk into the store. Again, if there are any problems, it'll notify you before you get to the store.

As long as your phone is IRU (in your name, not your company's), a FAN shouldn't cause an issue. But that's not to say that on launch day, Apple's communications with AT&T won't melt down, causing problems to people with FANs. Who knows about random crap that might happen?! But in general, it's not an issue to upgrade with a FAN on your account.

I'm just quoting what the AT&T rep told me. I personally have an upgrade date of 12/27/2010, and have always had that upgrade date. The AT&T rep said it would not be updated but I'd be eligible for an iPhone 4 upgrade at the full discount. However, I would not be eligible for just any phone upgrade -- only iPhone 4.

I agree w/ the upgrade only to iPhone. I disagree w/ the date not getting changed. I'd put money on it that between today and the 15th (perhaps 24th) your upgrade date will get bumped up or the date will be removed entirely.

So im a bit confused with upgrading and pre ordering.....

The situation is similar to others, another person on my account is eligible but I am getting the upgrade and giving them my 3gs.

My issue though is the pre order, does it have to be the upgraded person who orders it, how does it verify this? If this is the result, is the new (micro) sim already loaded with that number? My idea was simply that it would come and i would activate it via itunes on my number, and they would put their sim in my old 3gs.

If this isnt the case, the iphone 4 comes with their number on the micro sim, they connect to itunes..... then we have to go to the ATT store and they put my number on a micro sim and put their number back on a standard sim......

Am i correct in my understanding of the process?

Sorry if this is redundant, and I understand that I CAN use their upgrade, I just am not too sure about the process.

Thanks in advance!

Have you read the upgrade guide? (see my sig) If you see some Q/A missing, please let us know.

The account holder or an authorized contact need to place the pre-order on the line that is eligible for upgrade.

The micro-sim arrives blank. Yes, just activate via iTunes.

If you run into trouble, call AT&T or go to the store. But there shouldn't be an issue.

Sorry if this is redundant, and I understand that I CAN use their upgrade, I just am not too sure about the process.

Your welcome. Please read through the upgrade guide and let us know how we can improve it.
