This is so frustrating.. I never thought twice about going for the glossy screen. I like my glossy black MacBook screen, but after seeing these pictures and reading about basically everyone buying the anti-glare. I like the esthetics of the black bezel, but this has something to it as well...

Doubt doubt doubt :(

Hope this helps, from AnandTech: "I’ve gotten a lot of requests about matte vs. glossy and my recommendation is simple: if you use your notebook indoors most of the time, go glossy. Outdoor users will definitely want matte." http://www.anandtech.com/show/3659/apples-15inch-core-i5-macbook-pro-the-one-to-get

Question about the Speck case....is there a liner inside as well or just the outside is rubberized? I used to have a clear skin on my late 2008 model. It was in perfect shape when I sold it last week. Trying to decide if I was to get the skin for this new one...:D

Id jump on the 15" hi-res matte if only it had a black bezel

I really hate how the silver bezel looks. It looks so old. The black bezel gives it a touch of class and refinement. IMO.

These pictures have converted me!

I used to be a big fan of glossy but these pictures look great! I actually prefer the silver bezel now. It blends better with the bottom half and looks lighter and more sleek.

Who knows? Maybe the lack of glass even makes the antiglare model a bit lighter in weight?

I was at the apple store near my house to check out the glossy vs Matte. I definitely still like the glossy. Since I am mostly indoor...I think I will stick with glossy..

i just want you to know, i hate you! :D

went to apple store after reading this post, they had the 15" i7 with hi-res AG screen and i got to compare the two - there is no brainer the AG is so much better when looking at it with a bright light source.

there is much more room to maneuver when working with apps; but most important, virtually no damn glare compared with the glossy. maybe, maybe, i may pick up a base i5 w/the hi-res AG screen...even tho i hate the extra bulk....i am gonna wait until my relative's 15" come in and play with it before throwing down the $$$...decisions decisions.

if it were an impulse buy, definitely 1) hi-res; 2) AG screen! congrats on your toy.

What's watching movies like on the AG screen, since it has less 'popping' colors than the glare screen?

Thanks again for posting your pictures. From what I can gather, text is still very readable at 1680 x 1050. Since I'm used to 1280 x 800 I was a little bit hesitant at how text would look on such a high-res screen, but I think I will be very happy if I would choose to go with the high-res screen.

Maybe this will be useful:

Code:
1280 x 800 - 13.3" - 16:10 - 113.49 ppi - 0.2238mm dot pitch
1440 x 900 - 15.4" - 16:10 - 110.27 ppi - 0.2303mm dot pitch
1680 x 1050 - 15.4" - 16:10 - 128.65 ppi - 0.1974mm dot pitch
1920 x 1200 - 17.0" - 16:10 - 133.19 ppi - 0.1907mm dot pitch

Watching movies on the anti-glare screen is great, as is viewing photos, browsing websites, viewing documents, everything! I use to be pro-glossy, until I got the anti-glare. From now on, I'm always getting an anti-glare option if its available. Honestly, the colors are just as vibrant on the anti-glare when compared to glossy.

Hmm, guess that is the tradeoff Apple gave us users.

If you want black border (style matches the current MBP design), you have to deal with gloss and reflections

while

If you want matte, you have to deal with the silver framing and having a not entirely matched design.

Here is what I think, if Apple were to change the color of the keyboard for matte option MBPs to silver too (like the previous non-unibody) MBP. I think the silver frame + silver keyboard will look better then the current silver frame + black keyboard.

Cause if you look at the current glossy MBPs, the Black frame matches the design, primarily cause of the black keyboard. Imagine how it will look if it only has black frame and silver keyboard

Btw, anyone care to do a mockup of a MBP with silver frame + silver keyboard and a glossy MBP with silver keyboard? I am interested to see the difference.

The Speck Satin case is rubberized on the outside. Inside is just hard plastic. I had it installed on the 15" glossy MBP I returned today. It was a major pain to get the section that attaches to the back of the lid. I used an old credit card, to insert just above the iSight camera, moved it all the way to the right, around the curve, and downward toward the first tab on the right side of the bezel. I had to use some scary force but it finally snapped off.

The bottom part was easy to remove without any credit card or tools. After I got both pieces off, I didn't notice any scuff marks.

Quick rough up, not great as working at the mo.

I bought a 17" i7 anti-glare from the Apple Store Regent Street. I am in LOVE. I have to say I had so much internal (and external if you ask my girlfriend and mates) turmoil on deciding which type of screen to go for. My main concern (frivolously now with hindsight) was the aesthetic. Yes the black bezel looks smart echoing the black keys BUT now having used the anti-glare for a short few hours I can honestly say the silver bezel is just as beautiful. For function the anti-glare is a no brainer.

I am over the moon with my decision and it also meant I HAD to get the faster processor as I was buying from in-store stock (they had glossy 17" i5 or anti-glare 17" i7 builds only).

OP congratulations on your decision and new purchase. Enjoy. I certainly am. :D

Smoothie thank you for posting these pictures, a tremendous help. Very happy regarding my choice. I was concerned about text size with the AG, but I can see I'll have no problems reading/writing on my 15" MBP. Also glad I did not go with the 17" for this very reason as someone mentioned the 17" would make the text appear smaller due to the greater amount of screen real estate. :)

It's ok and Thanks, Daelos. That is already enough to show what I meant (I suck at Photoshop )

Hmm, anyone have any ideas how to push this idea to Apple?

Silver keyboard (like previous MBP gen design) for users who opt for matte display cause seriously, why do we have to pay extra to get a MBP without glass display

And I bet many users will be pleased that they will have a matching keyboard color when they opt for matte display :D

You're welcome to all who I've helped in making their decision to go anti-glare. I am like many of you...I think I've ordered three different configurations of MBPs on Apple Store Online, eventually cancelled all three orders, bought two MBPs from Apple Retail Store, and returned one. It was pretty frustrating thinking about all the different combinations to buy for such a high end laptop. But I think that my choice of the 15" i7 with High-Res anti-glare display is the perfect laptop for me.

I'm sorry, the black bezel is far nicer looking. I'm not saying style over substance, but the colours should also look a lot more vibrant on a glossy screen. I personally don't think it's worth the upgrade.

+1 In your comparison pics, the colors of the glossy screen are noticeably better; whereas, the matte display's color palette looks washed-out in comparison.

You can't compare colour from photos of the screen.

Sure I can...especially when they are taken with the same camera in the same lighting right next to each other.

Especially if they are right next to each other. The brightness levels of each screen will differ slightly, and the saturation of the glossy will cause the camera to adjust the white point.

If you set the camera up to the same brightness levels, same white point levels etc etc then you'd have some sort of point.

You need to see each screen in person to compare accurately.. photos do not provide justice.
