Yo Elvis!

I've been playing with the EVO since June 1st comparing it to the iPhone 3GS. I also ordered an iPhone 4 so I can include it in the shootout.

The EVO has its strong points: 4G data service, unique apps (Sprint live TV, GPS status, animated wallpaper), unfettered multitasking, bigger screen.

It has its commonality with the iPhone: makes phone calls, does text messaging, many similar or identical apps including Pandora, Shazam, WeatherBug, Google Earth, SportsTap, Fandango, etc.

It has it's weak points: shorter battery life (on average) than the iPhone 3GS or 4, lacks cool apps like NFS: Shift, Plants vs Zombies, AutoWeek, Things.

As for the "hotspot" feature, it works, but the "client" devices using the hotspot download/upload a much lower speeds than the EVO "host." And my biggest bummer: lack of simple, integrated tool to sync tunes, movies, contacts, calendar, apps with my Mac.

Many of the EVO's weaknesses will be addressed in time. The Android phones represent the biggest competitive challenge to the Apple iPhone. And more Android phones are coming including the Droid X from Verizon which is being shown at E3 this week. Supposedly the ship date will be officially announced the day before the iPhone 4 ships.

Not to make execuses for the android platform, but androids power comes with its ability to sync with the cloud, so computer syncing is secondary at best. Once you see that under google's paradigm, the need for a computer to synchronize your phone becomes moot.

Not only that, there are plenty of tools to sync an Android phone with a computer. Missing Sync for Android for example

I can imagine the absolute carnage on these boards if google did a Palm and tried to nativly sync with iTunes. Palm's name was mud in these parts because of it.

Android: A platform unable to sync with Apple's ecosystem = Poor.
WebOS: A platform (which used to be) able to sync with Apple's ecosystem via Palm hacking = Evil, thieves, riding on Apple's success, come up with your own solution e,t,c.

After that, all there is is iPhone, which isn't a bad choice by any stretch of the imagination!

I only sync Music, and Movies to my iPhone now anyway. I use Google Sync for everything else (which I also use on my Mac/Linux computers to keep them in sync). That's actually one of the appeals I have for Android.

As for Syncing music, I'd rather not be tied to iTunes. I'm pretty sure there are wireless syncing solutions for Android devices, which I would like to do. Plugging in my phone at all to my computer seems unnecessary. I'm pretty sure Google is working on OTA music for Android with their purchase of SimplifyMedia. So that will be awesome too! Total access to my music library from anywhere is going to be great. :) It makes SD card size issues moot as well and will prevent me from EVER having to plug my EVO into my computer at all.

Just mentioning this because to some, like you, this is a disadvantage, for others, like me, it's a major advantage.

We all saw what happened when the cloud failed earlier this year. Granted it has it's strong points, I prefer not to rely on something that could fail and lose all my data in one fell swoop.

I have both phones as well and I am returning my evo next week. I cannot stand the battery life. I listen to a lot of podcasts, it is a huge chore to get podcast downloaded and synced to the device.

Seriously? Dragging and dropping is a "huge chore"??? Wow.

The screen is very old tech, it has only 16k colors.

Agreed. Although for someone with poorer eyesight the bigger screen is more important, so it all depends on what your needs are.

I cannot stand typing on it, I am not going to spend money to switch through the different keyboards.

This statement strikes me as odd. What about the keyboard do you not like? Are there not some FREE alternatives you could try?

You can jailbreak your phone very easily and that will get you the hotspot functionality.

Can a new customer get unlimited data very easily with that arrangement??? Yeah. That's what I thought.

I know that the topic has largely centered on the EVO, but with all this talk of Android slowness, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned or seems to be aware of the Samsung Galaxy S coming out. The screen on it looks amazing and it seems to be QUITE responsive. It's bigger then an iPhone but smaller then an EVO so it fits right into that sweet spot in the middle. The only negative I can see with it so far is that it has no camera flash which is a huge mistake I think. Other then that, it seems pretty good. I'd be interested to see how the screen compares to the iPhone 4. The videos so far just make it look stunning:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbJFJ2pmedA&feature=fvw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk84hFv5MxM&feature=fvw

And for all those that say the EVO is slow and unresponsive, this video suggest otherwise:

So proof out there that Android phones can be quick and responsive too. And can even have real nice screens on them. I'll be anxious to see a side by side comparison of the iPhone4 vs. the Galaxy S in full sunlight.

I don't understand the battery life is poor argument. I have been using my Evo for nearly two weeks now, and have had no problems with the battery lasting a full day (18hrs+) with moderate useage. I don't have a task killer installed, and I am not constantly trying various tricks to extend life other than having 4G disabled. I leave Wifi, GPS and bluetooth all enabled. My "moderate" useage includes 1-2 hours of browsing the web, 2-4 hours of listening to music, and 30 minutes - 1 hour on calls.

You know, except scroll smoothly. I still have my Nexus One. It still doesn't scroll smoothly. Did you see that guy's review who you called an Apple fanboy? Sure, he doesn't back up ALL his claims with video evidence, but he has direct phone to phone comparisons in terms of scrolling and navigating, and, surprise, the EVO lags to all hell, like all other Android phones I've used.

Sorry but I have to chime in here. That dude has the most spastic finger I've seen in my life. When are you ever going to scroll that spastically? Really. Unless you're an eleven year old girl.

I did to my EVO what that guy did. And yes, it lagged. But that's not how I or any normal person uses their phone. I've had a LOT of issues with my EVO. I've also had a LOT of issues with every iPhone I've owned. Like most of my calls fail. I'm now getting over 10 hours of heavy use after doing that battery condition thing. Android is a fantastic platform.

But if all you want is plug and play with no true customization and don't care about the herd mentality then the iPhone is probably the one you should get.

Can I just tell you how much I love the back button.

And Google Goggles! Amazing!

Built in Google Navigation with spoken turn by turn directions using freaking satellite maps!!?

Has anyone tried the Tricorder App? A real working tricorder!! I held it next to a meteorite today and it went off the charts.

The Notification Drawer!

So much to love.

Everyones needs are different. I have the best of both worlds with my ipad and my evo. For some things the ipad/iphone is best. But when i go to a page with a big hole due to no flash on my ipad i can go there on my evo and see the video. Also when no wifi for my ipad i can make my own hotspot with the evo. I have access to the whole app market both apple and android. My battery on my evo lasts 16-18 hours depending on use. Iphone is not an option for me as horrible att coverage where i live and great sprint coverage. I think the decision of carrier comes first. Doesnt matter what phone you have if lousy coverage- biggest drain on battery is looking for signal. Next comes user preference of need to customize. I personally like to make my phone my own, but that is just me not everyone. Both phones are great. Pick what suits your coverage area, budget, and personality.

I guess you're one of the lucky 5% that claim to be getting good battery life. Either that, or you're lying. Google EVO 4G battery and see for yourself why the issue has made most of the EVO's worthless by 1pm.

Dude... http://www.google.com/search?client=ubuntu&channel=fs&q=iphone+3g+battery&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

The Internet is a collection of people's bad experiences. A lot more rants than raves about anything. My iPhone 3G barely lasts a day.

Bwahahahhahaha. A day is a myth with the EVO. Why can't people just admit the EVO has terrible battery life? Why do people always need to try and throw the iPhone under the bus and act like if a phone has a fault, the iPhone probably has the same one, but worse?

Sure the iPhone doesn't have a great battery either, but when the 3G was released, there weren't mounds of articles talking only about the brutal battery life ala EVO 4G.

does the evo have poor battery life out of the box? for most, yes. can it be remedied with simply tricks (such as formatting the sd card)? yes. htc dropped the ball on their SETTINGS out of the box. good to great battery life (especially for the features) can be had on the evo 4g without question. do your homework, noob. stop being ignorant.

Absolutely. When I got my Desire first it could barely manage 12-15 hours of reasonalbe usage. Had to charge it every night.

now after a couple of tweaks I get a minimum of 36 hours and that's will pull mail to two accounts every 15 mins. It pays to play with the settings and stuff to get the right balance.

Out of curiosity, do you remember which settings you tweaked? That's a nice amount of battery life.

Weren't you jailbroken?

My 3g, with 4.0 jailbroken still gets decent battery life (5 hours of heavy usage) after almost 2 years.

You're not getting the new iPhone right? :)

Yea I am jailbroken. I got WAY better battery life with my 3.1 set up. Since I upgraded to 4.0 it's become way worse. Not sure what's up with that though.

Yea, no new iPhone for me. I already ordered an EVO. I want a new iTouch to come out with similar hardware so I can just tether it to my EVO. I would like to keep developing for the iPhone and start on Android.

Because the phone just came out and it's a bit early to judge. I wasn't throwing the iPhone 3G under the bus, but when the phone first came out, there were floods of articles about poor battery life. As it turned out, the iPhone 3G usually makes it a full day. I say usually because if I have a weak signal at work my phone dies very fast.

The fact is that people love to play with new phones. Phones don't last very long when being played with heavily. Once people settle down to normal use you'll barely see anything. But whatever. Think what you want. You don't have to use one.

Stock EVO, stock battery, stock firmware, no task killer, 4G off, wifi on, gps on.

But go right on ahead and doubt if you like.

you must be one of the few lucky ones to have great battery life, mine was absolutely horrible and I'm just waiting for sprint to send me a box to return it,

Did you have multi-tasking enabled?

I have 4.0 jb with MT and wallpapers and I'm seeing better battery life than I did with 3.1.2jb and other things running. Nothing from cydia installed at all, just jb to allow MT and walls.

Did you upgrade? I set up as a new Phone and didn't restore. That seems to be key with every single update.

There are so many variables that it's almost impossible to do good comparisons. Some examples:

  • If you have Push turned on of any kind, and you have a bad signal, or even have a quick-to-timeout connection path, you'll use a ton more battery than a person next to you who doesn't.
  • Cell strength is critical. Whether you use it in one spot or moving.
  • What apps you use or how much you talk or surf the web.
  • What widgets you have turned on, and their update frequency.
  • WiFi. Bluetooth. Backlight intensity.
  • Battery calibration can be way off and give fake bad results.
  • A new phone gets used a lot more just from trying it out and showing it off.
  • Whenever a new iPhone or OS hits, people report everything from improved battery time to worse battery time.
It means that everyone can have totally different results. So there's no reason to claim that anyone is lying either way.
