I'm not entirely happy with any of them. I do prefer the leftmost one (but seeing that it doesn't contain either the logo or any of this site's brand, I guess that icon will be least likely to actually make it into the official app).

Please share your thoughts on the icons!

EDIT: @Saladinos: If you decide on an icon, let me know so I can make all the versions.

The middle one — definitely. It looks sleek and is very "pro" looking.

Well, I'm still trying to get the site officially on board with this. I've been working on it a lot, and arn's considering it. The news section of the app has made great progress (has some great features), but I still have a few things to fix. We could launch after that, or we could work on the forums first. It depends on the site.

The site wants control over the app, so this is going to be a freelance project - I'm going to sell the app to the site, so they own everything. If you think about the user base of this site, they'd be really exposed if somebody stripped ads out.

That means that icons and things that you contribute can't be used unless I've got license to do so (i.e. if you let me use it under a CC license, and it gets arn's approval). If I'm getting paid for this, I don't want to use your artwork unless you explicitly permit me to do so with a CC license. I'll credit you, of course. And I'll also be making my own.

looking good! :) I really wish arn wasn't drawing this out so long....

My only concern is there might not be enough screen real estate designated for the articles. After the status bar at the top, the MacRumors bar, the front page page 2 etc, the "most recent bar thing", and then the ad, and then the switcher down at the bottom. It looks like over half the screen is dedicated to all those extra bars. Just a thought that you may try to consolidate. But if in actual use, it feels fine then I'm ok :)

I hope you get the forums working soon!

It's all looking fantastic Saladinos!

Re icon, I definitely agree with Z - the middle one is best.

MR has nearly 500,000 registered members, so if this app is free to download, you could be looking at well over 100,000 users. Not bad. A good addition to your CV.

Looking very good, Saladinos, as somebody already pointed out, this must be a great addition to your CV! You're of course very welcome to use my icons (I hereby give them to you under the "Do-what-you-want-with-them" license :D), you can use them under the same license if you get paid. I can also make the other versions (iTunes, iPhone 4, Spotlight) if you need them. Just let me know which version you prefer.

I'm a little disappointed arn wants to have the total control over the app - although I understand that he wants to not allow people to strip the ads out. I would have loved to see the project go open-source and be developed by the community, but oh well!

In case you still need somebody for the coding side of things, I'm also available for that.

Decided on this, I think it looks best. I attached all the icon files you need to build a universal app. The files may only be used for the official MacRumors app.

MacRumors Mobile iPhone App

Do you think one will ever come out? Or even just a mobile version or MacRumors.com would be nice. It would be a lot more convenient to access the iPhone forum via my iPhone. :D

There already is one, search MacRumors it has forums blogs and profile.

I think its not made by MacRumors though. And its 99 cents.

And for the iPad too, I would like them to do it like the Mac4ever french site that has push notifications, news feed and comments sections for both the iPhone and the iPad.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

I downloaded the "unofficial" app, but I never use it. MacRumors is the only tab that's constantly in my browser. :p

I'd like to see one that made use of push notifications.

Don't buy an app, just go to http://mobile.macrumors.com/ and then add a link to you home screen. They have a pretty nice icon.

I didn't even know they had a mobile site! Thanks!

The "most recent article" bar is part of the first article, so it disappears when you scroll. We've also tucked controls out of sight to maximize viewing space - e.g. Tap the MR icon to bring up a search box, double-tap article header to bring up back bubbles.

There are some technical challenges facing forums (which is why so few forums have apps). I can do it, but not before terms with the site are sorted out. If arn says no, all this work has been done for nothing.

As for the App logo I would keep it simple and just use the website logo...with a black or white background. I think the one showed with the grey background are a bit too sad...

If arn really does say no, couldn't you just open-source it? After all, it's your work, so arn can't really prevent you from publishing it (though I can see you'd like to see at least some money for it).
