There is no reason for Apple to withhold the sale of white iphones. If they were available, they would be available for preordering/reserving. Why would Apple effectively decrease their number of sales and revenue? Nothing would make Apple happier than breaching the 1 million sales in a day milestone. There is clearly a production issue.

I agree. . . at first (yesterday) I was pissed. but now it's not that bad I still get the update on the 21st so I guess I can wait awhile. What I don't like is. . . what will happen next year! I hope my upgrade will still be on cycle.

Yeah.. I mean if I wanted a white one what do I do now? I have no clue as to when I can get a white phone... so then you think to yourself.. well black will do.. then you get the black and 2 weeks later the white comes out. Or you wait for the white forever and it never comes for 6 months.

IMO.. its just as bad for Apple to advertise the white phone on the keynote and their website and then the day its suppose to come out for preorder just say its not available? Thats just as bad as the preorder server ordeal IMO

If they would give us a timeframe to expect the white, they could probably avoid much of that hassle in the first place. That way people could actually make a decision on if they should get black now, or wait for the white. Right now I'm just sitting here waiting to find out and that's what's maddening.

I want the white very much but if it's 2-3 months away I would have already pre-ordered the black and been done with it. Since we don't yet know, I have not pre-ordered anything.

Trust me...I'm pretty sure everyone that is upset about this whole ordeal is in the same boat...
(Me included)

...and watching that delivery date just keep climbing is maddening...

Because if the numbers of white iPhones are so few because of production issues, why would they put a few thousand up for preorder? Why not just put them for sale in the stores as they become available?

Exactly what I've been thinking. If they said anything other than early July, I would've preordered the black. I was up at 3AM CST to preorder, and saw the absense of white preorder which pissed me off. I'll be fine with waiting, but if it's August or later, I would've bought the black one right away and been in the 1st batch. Even if Apple comes forward today and says "August" or whatever, I'm already delayed 2 weeks because I've been waiting.

I could have been an ass like a bunch of people on this board, and bought the black one, then returned it for a white at a later date - but I wasn't going screw someone out of a black one.

Spoke to a few Best Buys in my area (one of which I have a pre-ordered white one) and they all said the same thing. No white iPhones for a while.

Sorry guys, the quicker you accept this the less painful it will be on the 24th :(

I called 2 of my local ATT stores and they said that they will have some WHITE iphone 4's but obviously you will have to get there early to try and get one.

Wow I sure hope I can get one on launch day. I pre-ordered the 32GB black thinking that if I didn't hear anything before the launch I would settle for the black. I really really want the white though.

Not sure what I'll do in terms of waiting in line early in the morning since it's a regular work day. (what's up with Apple launching on a Thursday anyway??)

I don't understand why they couldn't just make the same amount of each. Or at least a third white. Unless they're made out of baby's tears, they shouldn't be rare. It's just a color.

i will be collecting my reserved black 16gb from the UK's flagship store, Regent Street. i'm wondering whether they will at least have some white units there just for display purposes...then again, maybe not a good idea to display things you can't sell immediately as it would probably decrease sales of black if people thought 'i will hang around'.

because if they do, and i really, really like the white, then i won't go ahead with the purchase...if they don't have white then i will just regard that as 'fate' and go ahead with the black. since it will be unlocked, re-selling would be pretty easy one month down the line if when i finally see a white it just becomes obvious that it is better e.g. fingerprint smudges. knowing me though, by that point, i won't be arsed with the hassle of changing :D

If that seriously happens, I think that's insane. There should be a riot if they pull something like that. No way you shouldn't tell people things like that ahead of time. It's an awful thing to do to customers. Either make it known or not at all...you'd essentially be tricking customers. I would hope at least someone at Apple or ATT took a business course or two.

Exactly. What about a color, could be so catastrophic in the manufacturing process, that the white ones are put on hold for 2 months and not the black ones? Seriously?

I believe they will inform us about the issue in the next couple of days. It could have been a defect that was discovered recently. Apple might have recently pulled out the white phones.

Quarter 3 sales. They want that extra 20% of people who will hold out for white, to hold out until JULY. So they can boost their sales and profits.

Also, it's like everyone wanting Wii's at Xmas. Of course Nintendo HAD the stock, could MAKE the stock...but that exclusive feeling of "I'VE GOT A WII!" drummed up sales for the long haul rather than letting everyone get it when they wanted it and then the buzz die down.

The 'white iPhone' is about buzz, that's all. They made white iPhones, they had to. They were all over the WWDC and in press releases stating available for pre-order.

There are thousands of white iphones ready to be sold, but Apple's playing a game. Simple.

they could've just as well said "White Available July 12" or something on the main page instead of "white is unavailable to purchase at this time"

That just pisses people off. People will wait if they knew a date, but as of now it's "who knows? could be never. FU consumers"

or here's a thought - don't announce a date before Q3. They knew when they'd have the stock.

Yeah, but why can't they just say "July 22nd" or something.

Whatever it is...just say something. There's a big difference between waiting 2 weeks and waiting 2 months. It would be nice to let people know so they can decide to either wait or just give up and buy the black one. Right now it's really hard to guess what you should do.
+2

We clearly see that the demand is very high. Looking at the pre-sale figures alone indicates that they will have plenty of steam in Q3. There must be a problem at hand.

One side of me Wishes the white iPhone was available at launch but i have the White 3GS think i'll switch it up this time around and get Black.

Is it possible to exchange unopened black iPhone 4 for white iPhone 4??

Would it be possible to exchange my black iPhone 4 for a white iPhone 4 (when it is released) as long as I don't open it?

Or any other options or suggestions to obtaining a white iPhone 4? I really wanted the white one but settled for a black Pre-Order instead... :(

If you aren't going to open it... why even buy it? If you can wait for white, cancel your order, wait for the white one and buy that one.

p.S. Seriously, why the love for the white? whats the big deal?

in the same position :/ I'd gladly hand over my unopened black iPhone for a white one on launch day if that was possible whatsoever, but I highlyyy doubt it.

Dude chill.. It was an IDEA. I obviously woke up early and waited on the internet to pre-order because I WANTED THE PHONE asap. I already sold my iphone 3g and now I eagerly waiting for the iPhone 4 to arrive. I'm content with keeping the black I was just wondering if it was possible. I just think the white looks much more attractive then the black does.. that is all.

lollollol yes you are absolutely correct.
It had NOTHING to do with logistics.
It had NOTHING to do with suppliers who made required components in the wii.
It had NOTHING to do with their decision to not build additional facilities to ramp up production because when (not if) demand tapered off, they would have expensive speciality facilities unused.

I mean shoot they have plenty to gain. Why have customers buy your console now when they are willing when it's obvious that they'll always have that money forever and will save it in the little "wii" envelope lol, recessions and job losses aside.

Lest we be shortsided and forget that nintendo overproduced the gamecube. It'd be stupid to make the same mistake again.

-------------
add: And guess what? Nintendo was in kahots with ebay and the wiisellers. Clearly Nintendo was given a cut of the fees paid to ebay and paypal for every wii sold. It was a very profitable venture, even if people were pissed off.
