I'm assuming their is a much bigger demand then they thought so they need to craft more instead of shipping lets say 1million whit and 9million black iphones at launch

There honestly has got to be a pretty good news story here somewhere. If I were a journalist I would be all over this making some calls right now and throughout the day.

I have to agree with what was said above though, the lack of the white one in the initial production, is going to make the supply of these phones really really scarce. I am going to predict right now some seriously quick sell out times and long waits for shipping once the initial supply is gone.

Status Symbol?
The illusive white iPhone has always aspired to be a status symbol - originally slated for the higher end 16GB 3G Model, the 8GB was available in black only.
When the 3GS came out the white was available in both sizes, but the white iPhone was not available at launch.... Do you see a trend?
If you have a white iPhone now then you either payed dearly for it in the 3G, model or you took your time with the 3Gs and waited for the queues to die down....
I personally think the white iPhone is more stylish, it co-ordinates better with the coloured bumpers (which is why Apple had to show it off at the keynote) and word has it that the new white iPhone 4 is less prone to fingerprints than the black version - in other words the grease is less obtrusive on the new glass casing.
Yes, the white is definitely going to be the one I choose, so I am putting my card back in my wallet and will sit this out for now. I bet we are looking at 3-6 weeks for the white iPhone 4.

let's say there was a manufacturing fault somewhere, would you rather find the problems yourself or have Apple fix the problem NOW and be worry free later? i'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for the delay.
as for me, the new iPhone doesn't come out till next month in Canada. so this doesn't have an affect on me whatsoever, yet...
if there is a delay again, i can wait. i'm getting a white one no matter what.

It's not on the black. The black has tinted glass just like the current iPhones. They can't do that with the white so they used the grill instead.

Hahah very true good thing for me is my husband is eligible for upgrade next june
. He could careless about the new iphone so i can wait for white Unless something happens and they kill that eligibility but i have saved a screen print of it, not that it matters anyway....

I don't think people have a problem if there was in fact a problem. People have a problem with nothing being communicated to the customer.
I think it's more likely that Apple have focussed on making as many black iPhones as possible instead of white ones so they had ANY chance at all of meeting demand.
I don't know the process that they go through to make the iPhone (other than what we saw in the Keynote video) but it's possible that changing to white "may" have interrupted production too much.

S**T happens life is way too short to sweat the color of a cell phone. As much as i would like a white one. I got more important things in life to worry about than a stupid colour of an iphone.

I am really bummed about the white phone's unavailability!!! The black phone loo like it shows fingerprints horribly!
And i get people feeling bad about it. But some people have their whole life wrapped up in a device. Family, Friends , living is more important. I love my iphone but my life is more important.
