I think kids shouldnt have a cell phone. They dont need one. Once they hit 16 or 17 thats the age to get them one. (Job, contact with parents when out with friends etc) but when they are in elementary or middle school, there's no reason to get them one.

Yeah, I've seen 3rd graders with a cell phone. They have no reason to have one.

actually, most kids DO. i am not usually at someones house. im usually outside, enjoying life, so if my parents want to find out where i am or talk to me, what do they do? they call my cell phone, which infact, i need. and btw, i never asked for my first phone. my parents bought me one. no, my first phone was not an iphone. it was a nextel i1000 plus.

Kthxandbai.

Yeah, back when I was a kid, my parents never knew where I was. I'd randomly wander off and they'd hope I'd make it home for supper.

Kids need cell phones like the desert needs sand.

LOL and they can monitor that if you have a cell phone? Listen here ya whippersnapper, I may be old (mid 20's) but I had friends with cell phones when I was a youngin, who got away with a lot more than I did. Giving your kids a cellphone has nothing to do with good parenting.

i know, but it helps.

You'd lose wireless, downloadable apps, GPS, 3G but everything else would fit in no problem.

Apps like Address Book, Cover Flow, camera, clock, calendar, calculator etc. would need hardly any tweaking at all to fit on the screen.

Imagine - the smallest touchscreen phone on the planet, with a 2gig iPod, Pay As You Go for £150. It'd be brilliant.

Hey! That was a good post. You thought it out.

There is no doubt the iPhone is being, at minimum, developed into other forms. It's a hot property, and the next decade at Apple will see it be a major fixture on the product line. It would only make sense to have lesser versions; like they made of the iPod after a few years.

Your breakdown works. The shuffle version (tho ridiculous in essence) would work in time as a mere, quick communication device with simple contacts, music, clock, phone, etc. As mentioned above, parents love to keep tabs on kids so a pared down version of the phone for quick calls is perfect and accessible the the general public that might not want all the internet function.

One possible error in thought - such a phone negates the ability to buy/download apps and iTunes. Those two stores are big cash, and it might be possible the flaw of the plan stops there. Only Apple is properly working out the consequences of that limitation.

I don't know if anyone has posted this idea yet but an iPhone nano would be a runners dream device. If the form factor was much smaller than the current iPhone (like the ipod nano is to the classic) and it had a gps chip in it, it'd be the perfect device for running.

Right now I bring along my shuffle and garmin gps watch along with me on my runs. Having an iPhone nano with gps would combine my music player, gps watch and emergency phone in one small device to bring along.

Of course this could be more of a niche use, but with past push of Nike+ it could be a decent use for a device like this.
