I gotta believe this rumor is absolute BS. The :apple: iPhone is a convergence device. Apple's not gonna pull out the Safari and other key functionality in order to produce a lesser product. The next version (whatever and wherever it is) will be better, not worse. ;)

Whether it happens or not,

SMALLER = MORE EXPENSIVE PER EQUAL CAPACITY

Those who dream of a 100terebyte iPhone or ipod Nano at $10, should keep dreaming (or get a job).

I believe a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised about what's going to happen this fall or by Christmas Season anyway..
I remember not too many people were happy about the iPod Nano becoming a fattie, seems to me like it's been selling well though, now a lot of people are calling BS or think they won't be happy with Nanos turning back Tall and iPhones having a smaller "brother"..
I remember rumours or news regarding Apple buying smaller (2,8") touchscreens..so I guess mockups for both iPod Nano and iPhone Nano should start from that
I know i'll be kinda happy anyway as I own both a first gen iPod Nano 4Gb and iPhone 3g 16Gb, iPods are nice to control while in your pocket, touchscreens make that kinda impossible, so I guess the wheel stays, while a smaller, cheeper iPhone with the same OS (I don't think they will build anything different) would be interesting,at least in Europe, for the ones that don't need contracts and don't spend 500€ per phone(750$),they probably don't need a glass screen either, give them more resistant plastic..

Who said anything about the iPhone Nano replacing the iPhone? This will be a new line. Just like there are multiple iPods, there will be mutiple iPhones. The iPhone 3G line will continue to be enhanced with each new model. But I really think there is a heavy market of people out there would would not buy an iPhone but would buy an iPhone Nano. I know half a dozen people myself who would do this. Why do you think Samsung has so many models. Why is there a Treo Centro and the new Treo 800w. Because they sell to different markets. Diversification is a key to being a success in business. Apple isn't stupid, they know this. That is why there is a Shuffle, a Nano, a Classic and a Touch. They will do the same thing for the iPhone.

a lotta people are happy with their iPod shuffles and 4Gb Nanos, and since most smartphones don't even have 8Gbs, 4Gb should be enough on a cheaper iPhone

bad idea

And what about the phone being long enough to reach from ear to mouth? Sure it's not absolutely necessary, but it's another inconvenience. This isn't gonna happen.

What if they made a remake of Zoolander's cell phone? I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

Not a smaller iphone fan

An iphone nano would be rediculous. How or why would you want to REDUCE your screen size, reduce your capabilities, and reduce your hard drive space? Probably to save 50 bucks. Apple has been, in the past 10 years, really bad with their prices. No discounts, no price drops worth anything. I mean, just go to their apple store and look at the prices for the macPros. They charge 800 dollars for 2Ghz more processing power. Give me a break.

Again, why would someone want a SMALLER iphone?

What do you live in? A refrigerator box?

too good. hahahaha.

I will say this. The iPhone Nano WILL happen. It makes too much sense for it not to. I'm sure Apple has down public surveys where they find the #1 reason people don't purchase an iPhone is the cost, and the price of the expensive plan. Yet, they still contiune to see lines out the door at Apple stores to get one of these things.

I say $99, 2 year contract required, but doesn't need a data plan, just like any other cellphone at&t sells.

That's just asinine. Price drops happen ALL the time, sometimes within weeks of a product release and Apple has been offering significant educational discounts for years. I've never had a problem with Apple's pricing, except they charge too much for RAM upgrades.

However, there will be PLENTY of people who buy a smaller iPhone. They'll make a killing.

I don't think there will be an iphone nano, BUT i do think the new ipod nano's will have more iphone like capabilities. Such as maybe introducing a touch screen or wifi internet surfing. It would be more like an ipod touch nano. That seems much more likely then a smaller version of the iphone, since there are so many contractual issues with phone services and contracts and such, that it would be too complicated to introduce another cell phone device.

Wirelessly posted (iPod touch: Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5A347 Safari/525.20)

Does everyone needs a smart phone and a 90$ dollar contract. That's over
2700$ for two years. I'll stick to using skype at home and making calls untill I get home. Old school

A cell phone without a data plan would be prefect. Wifi is fine for me. maps a and gps would make the stock go up

Again, why would someone want a SMALLER iphone?

Because the current one is like a brick.

One reason I wouldn't want an iPhone (aside from the cost) is the bulkiness of it. My phone lives in my pocket, so the smaller the better.

I love the iPhone's features, which is why I bought a Touch. It doesn't leave the house though, one reason being is its size.

I'd gladly buy an iPhone Nano if it was Pay As You Go, touchscreen but without the internet on it.

iPhone Nano...Anyone?....Bueller?...

If u take a look at the "iPhone Nano Rumor Revived" Article https://www.macrumors.com/2008/08/03/iphone-nano-rumor-revived/

You can see that it is POSSIBLE that Apple will release an iPhone Nano by this Christmas. That would mean that he would "announce" it at the Apple iPod Event in September. I, personally, am very excited about this news, because if they came out with, basically, a smaller iPhone 3G, I would get it...

Anyone else excited about this?

i guess i'm excited too for the possibility. i can't afford the current iPhone (i don't qualify for the subsidized price), so the possibility of a cheaper and smaller version that i could afford would be great. But I'm still not sure if i believe the rumor is true.

I think the real reason people are questioning the usefulness of the smaller phone, despite clear advantages, is that they're afraid the new one will be SEXIER than their fat ugly iPhone.

[Okay fine, I said 'ugly' for the effect.]

Feature that would be cool

I think with how small the iPhone Nano will be, Apple needs to make the dock(on the screen, not the plugin dock) a coverflow dock. The middle App wouldn't be larger than any of the others but u could flick left and right to have more apps in your dock..

Anyone feel the same way?

The negative reaction to this is due to the fact lots of people have signed a 2 year ATT contract that will cost them tons of money, while a new cheaper iphone could be on the horizon. Sometimes it pays to wait and be patient.

example: Iphone edge price reductions.....

Good thought..... But i don't think there will be Safari, I think there will be an App Store and iTunes Store, and that would be IT. I Think the iPhone Nano could be a SMALL iPhone, OR it could be a Nano on an iPhone interface. In this case - Nano on iPhone interface - I think the icons on the home screen will be like Music, Videos, Photos, Podcasts, Extras, Settings, Shuffle Songs, Now Playing, iTunes Store, and App STore

The Daily Mail - cheap and nasty gossip rag - motto:
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story"

The screen would be so small, if you were browsing the internet, you wouldn't even be able to see anything!!!

As it is, the current iPhone is literally at the limit of how small a screen can be and still browse the internet without it being so annoying it was frustrating.
I'd rather have a bigger device for this functionality.

Remember the iPod Touch and the iPhone are somewhat in competition with each other.

Each iPod Touch is potentially a sale the phone will never make.
One is a media player, the other is a phone with a $2000 contract…

Insane. That statement is utterly divorced from reality.

There are about 1,000,000,000 that could use an iTablet in the world, when they get wireless. The notebook computer is a pointless device, or will be when the tablets come into being. Think about how stupid the design of a laptop is, how ergonomically awful it is, how non-mobile it is aside from being able to be carried from sitting position to sitting position.
I don't necessarily think tablets will replace notebooks, but there is definitely a market for, say, a $500 5.5" iPhone OS tablet, like education, e-book, and those who want high portability with productivity (iLife, iWork).

For increased portability.

And one factor behind the $800 is that Intel charges quite a bit for their processors.

i'll believe it when i see it. apple as enough problems to deal with, what with their current iphones cracking and software issues. hopefully they're spending more time and resources fixing their current line up than working on a iphone nano.

very possible

I think that there will for sure be other iPhone models as this is how Apple handles all of their products. I also believe we will see something completely new before the holidays as I have stated before. I can see a "pro" model and a "nano" model with the 3G being the "classic" as a very likely scenario. I for one could use something smaller and without music. What matters most to me is design. Next would be texting ability and a good camera with video. I think the current camera in the iphone (both original and 3G) is amazing but I wish I could zoom and do video. I would pay 750$ up front for something beautiful with all that the 3G is lacking. I think of the current iphone as heading on a similar trajectory as the ipod did.

X-

I think it is possible. Apple has subscribed to the two tier product philosophy in many of its products. It has had the top of the range ipod touch and has had the nano for many years. The same applies for its computer products.

I see no difference in have an IPhone and and Iphone Nano.

Apple filed a patent last year that does seem to show that the iPhone nano and that research has already begun on it.

I found a link to the following website which may give those who are skeptical a little something to think of http://www.pmptoday.com/2008/03/27/new-apple-ipods-in-q3-says-wolfson/
