Each iPod Touch is potentially a sale the phone will never make.

One is a media player, the other is a phone with a $2000 contract…

Er, both are media players.

Few people are going to buy an iPhone and then buy an iPod Touch, or vice versa.

Then they'd have two iPod Touches, one with a phone and camera. Which makes no sense.

I have one of each. Of course, I got both for free, so who am I to say whether or not it makes sense to have both?

(won the iPhone, got the iPod touch with the education discount of a friend)

Again, why would someone want a SMALLER iphone?

Because it's easier to carry around in your pocket. That's why I'd want one. Haven't you noticed the trend? Look at the cell phone offerings on the AT&T page. There is a big demand for small phones. I have friends who would never own an iPhone because they are too geeky. But use iPods all the time plus they have small cell phones. If you provided them with a device that combined these two features they would jump at it. Especially if the price is low enough.

I think most of us aren't grasping the possible market for this product. I think it would be aimed at the younger market who may not need or even not desire a full smart phone. It would be safe to say that every phone on the market other than the iphone lacks a satisfactory mp3 player. Therefore, why shouldn't apple want to put out a regular affordable cell phone for regular market with the ipod interface that this world loves? I think that alone would make it a huge hit, even without even a touch screen, the app store, visual vmail, push and all that our current iphone has to offer.

Dobut it will happen

Why? It will cause MORE confusion, among the touch, iphone and other new devices that are comming out. Apple really needs "one" phone, adding more to the plate will just cause confusion.

Now they could offer lets say a 8GB model with basic finctions, and have the higher up models like a 16 or 32GB with more advance features. 16GB would have features that a everyday user will need and a 32GB will offer advance features such as video conferencing etc. that sounds a bit more pratical then adding bunch of new models just to copy their cousin, the ipod.

I think kids shouldnt have a cell phone. They dont need one. Once they hit 16 or 17 thats the age to get them one. (Job, contact with parents when out with friends etc) but when they are in elementary or middle school, there's no reason to get them one.

Yeah, I've seen 3rd graders with a cell phone. They have no reason to have one.

For those saying that an iPhone Nano will never happen - do you ever wonder how these rumors get started? In most cases, it is because there is some small truth to them. I remember when the fat Nano was first rumored. People said, no it would never happen. It's too ugly. Apple isn't that stupid. Then when the Touch was rumored. People kept saying why would Apple cannibalize iPhone sells by introducing an iPod Touch. Apple isn't that stupid. But in both these cases the rumors turned out to be true. I predict the same thing will happen here. In spite of the nay-sayers, I predict we will see an iPhone Nano in time for Christmas sells this year.

iphone nano? the new iphone just came out, i highly doubt it would be a big seller if they release it anytime soon. it would be more reasonable if they produced a touch nano.

How about O2 give us the iPhone 3G pay and go they promised us first, before they start trying to launch yet another iPhone model which will also be in limited supply disappointing yet more customers.

The only way an "iPhone Nano" could be sucessful in the UK is if Apple sort out the lack of MMS, Video recording, and J2ME. These are all prevalent in the pay as you go market, and without them I could very well see the rumor generated Nano failing.

It's AWESOME that you think that, but as you've observed, cell phones are as ubiquitous among young children as they are among adults. And now that providers are limiting the number of minutes children can use and the texts they can send, cell phones are becoming even more attractive to parents who want a way to reach their children 24/7.

They also have an added bonus for kids with cellphones: Brain tumor in 30 years or money back guarantee.

And rather than contacting their children via cellphone 24/7, they should do their job and actually look after their kids. If they think a cellphone should look after their kids, they shouldn't have had any.

Where is your evidence that there is a direct link between brain tumors and the use of mobile phones?

Also where did collegedu3 say that mobile phones were a replacement for good parenting?

You're never going to see an iPhone nano... at least not this decade. There are too many components to make an iPhone that a smaller version would be nearly impossible, and probably not practical either.

*However*.... the idea of an iPod nano with touch controls? Or the possibility of the entire iPod line replaced with touch technology? That seems like a more realistic outcome, considering Apple's mention of a refreshed product line this fall. Then again, it could be new macbooks and newer iPods, nothing more.

Not going to happen. Image the screen. Smaller resolution? They would have to build totally new interfaces for ALL apps to fit it. Higher DPI? Ok, smaller buttons, smaller KEYBOARD (which would be the most awful factor)... And you wouldn't fit all the WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3G, Accelerometer, Speaker, Sensors, blablabla stuff, those which make the iPhone what it is.

and you're loony if you think that the iPhone is the only phone that syncs with a mac like the iPhone can.

But honestly, who flips through their iCal on their scroll wheel on their iPod? I want an INEXPENSIVE phone with mp3, and pseudo planner that can EASILY sync with mac. Name an inexpensive phone (under 100 dollars) that can do that.

Your statement is unfair. No one is saying a cell phone will 'look after' one's kids. However, a cell phone can do a darn good job at allowing parents to at least know where their kids are, and gives kids good ways to contact their parents in emergencies. If think that such actions should be completed by a parent instead of a cell phone, I suggest you take a good look at the rising generation and even your own. Today, it isn't so uncommon for both parents to work jobs with equally demanding schedules. It isn't fair to ask either spouse to give up a professional life to keep an eye on their children.

woot!

I really hope this is true, I dont want to shell out £300 for a iPhone 3G that does a few more things than my £200 iPod touch I already own, a iPhone nano would be perfect for what I need! Just a great pay as you go Apple-made phone to compliment my iPod touch, without huge memory etc.

If this where to come out, as long as it had some decent data deals (it is still a iPhone) I would buy it without delay!

Nah, it'd be easy.

You'd be able to work the screen if it was half the size. The keyboard only uses a portion of the screen. You'd just have less space at the top (you'll only use the keyboard for SMS):

You'd lose wireless, downloadable apps, GPS, 3G but everything else would fit in no problem.

Apps like Address Book, Cover Flow, camera, clock, calendar, calculator etc. would need hardly any tweaking at all to fit on the screen.

Imagine - the smallest touchscreen phone on the planet, with a 2gig iPod, Pay As You Go for £150. It'd be brilliant.

They'd sell millions. And it wouldn't compete with the iPhone, because of the lack of internet, and it wouldn't compete with the iPod range because they'd see a price drop and capacity increase.

I can see the centre machine working (minus Safari/email):

All this hype about new Iphone nano and new colors is stupid

I mean seriously.. apple will screw us that bought the iphone 1st gen. and then many many people bought the second version... and now they tell us their will be more colors? WTF? think of how many people will be pissed of on the fact that they bought the iphone, and few months later they have a new one.. and knowing apple.. it might be better... all this is to screw all of us over... Its like buying car. and the next day you find out that there were better versions and better colors for a cheapper price... thats BS.

And lets say we want to get the other iphone color or whatever.. are we going to be able to upgrade? i doubt it... and if we can.. thats money going to the trash.. this is BS

How is Apple screwing anyone? It's your own fault for buying something and regretting it later.

Solution:

You can get a $10 go phone from Best Buy, I'm betting it won't be upgraded anytime soon.

But if it is, hey you're only out $10!

Spoken like a true early adopter. I would have thought that anyone out there learned their lesson from last September. Apple made it clear with the one time Get Well $100 gift card. Buyer beware, this is just the speed of technology.

So Apple should wait until you're happy to release new models/colours? Stop complaining and realise that's how life is. Nobody owes you a damn cent.

I know that whatever product I buy today, the company will update it or introduce a better model at a better price/with more features. You won't see me crying or demanding 'upgrade' pricing because I bought the old model 6 months before and now I feel "ripped off!"
