No his phone doesn't work no matter who holds it, while my phone works no matter which one of us holds it.

OK, great! That's really interesting. I agree with wikoogle that if you could make a video showing that, it would help clarify things for lots of people.

It certainly can be a bad batch. It can also be a software issue. I dont' know, but I wouldn't say its obvious, especially considering some 3GS iPhones with iOS4 are having the same issues.

Maybe, but we both updated our 3G phones with no reception issues. There may be more than one issue here...a bad batch of phones + a software problem.

He doesn't get off till 7, so I will try tonight.

We can hate Apple. Lets say a business man got an iPhone 4. He is a lefty, and holds it, and loses reception. Bars go from 5 to 0. His important call with a customer is dropped. He can't sell. He can't do his job because Apple sold him a product with a design flaw. Steve blames him, and tells him to hold it differently. Steve also said how beautiful the iPhone 4 is, but recommends he covers it up in a fat ass ugly case. The business man must now pay $30 to use his $300 phone because Steve prefers form over function. The business man now must either return the iPhone that he was looking forwards to using, and get a different phone, and learn how to use it, or spend money to cover up Apple's ass.

Its pathetic. Period.

Thanks. That would be awesome.

Don't be surprised though if by 7pm, someone else already uploaded a video to macrumors proving the same point you're making.

I bought a phone that cannot make or receive calls when it is being held.

I don't care if the thing made smoothies and painted my house... if I can't use it for it's primary function - as a phone - then it's useless. I will not be "easing up on Apple."

The whining is pathetic.

Seriously, some people really need to grow up. Yeah it's a business, if you don't like it, you can take the phone back and get some other crummy phone.

So everything phone but the iPhone is pathetic? Sounds like a Apple loyalist to me. This whining isn't pathetic. Its the fact, that holding a phone in your hand normally kills all cellular signal. So if you are on a call, and hold it to your ear, the call is dropped.
Steve says other phones have the issue too. Maybe 1 or 2, and other phones may drop a bar or 2, but iPhone 4 can go from 5 bars to No Service just by holding it. THAT IS PATHETIC that such a flaw like that went past testing, but then again, Apple disguised the phone in a case to make it look like a 3GS, and has several AT&T cell towers on their HQ campus.

Lol, I remember back when some posters were asking what apple was thinking sending it's phones out into the real world to be tested. I think it makes a little more sense now.

Like I said, there will be a fix for the issue, and a replacement issued for you shortly.

Until then, either put a piece of tape there, use a case, or simply hold your iPhone a little higher up.

Damn, I just noticed that I'm starting to sound more and more like Steve every day. Is there some kind of initiation ritual I have to go thru before I can be officially enrolled into the apple cult? :p

So everything phone but the iPhone is pathetic?

I didn't say that.

Its the fact, that holding a phone in your hand normally kills all cellular signal. So if you are on a call, and hold it to your ear, the call is dropped.

Is that actually happening to you? Yes it may drop bars when you hold it and watch it happen, but in your normal use, is it happening?

Steve says other phones have the issue too. Maybe 1 or 2, and other phones may drop a bar or 2, but iPhone 4 can go from 5 bars to No Service just by holding it. THAT IS PATHETIC that such a flaw like that went past testing, but then again, Apple disguised the phone in a case to make it look like a 3GS, and has several AT&T cell towers on their HQ campus.

Again, is this actually disrupting your calls? Just because you know about this issue doesn't mean that it actually affects you.

I'm not having any reception issues no matter how I hold it but I'm in Manhattan and have a strong signal.

That said after reading a lot of reports on this I think it was a design decision to get stronger signals with the external antennas at the expense of occasionally blocking them with our hands. I think net net it is beneficial. I am experiencing overall better reception.

I still believe that some software updates will further improve this for some.

I'm coming from a 3g and am completely blown away by the phone in every respect!

because we bought it with our hard earn money and it is not working correctly out of box...

I was talking about the general sniping that seems to be directed at Apple by small minded people. That was something the OP was talking about originally.

As for your issue with your phone, take it back to Apple and take advantage of award winning customer service. Sometimes things are faulty, sometimes you get bad batches or design flaws. This is especially so when pushing boundaries of what is possible. If you want to be on the cutting edge them be prepared to get cut sometimes. If you want to play safe then buy a 3GS or a 3G or some other brand of smartphone which has been out for a while.

If there is an issue then Apple will fix it. If you can't wait for that then take it back for a refund. If you can alter the way you hold the phone in the meantime then great, do that. Personally I don't understand why anyone would want to hold the phone by the bottom corner. I've tried it and it feels awkward.

No need to be immature.

The complaints absolutely are valid. And if people are that bothered by it, they SHOULD return the device. There's absolutely nothing wrong with doing so.

All I'm saying is that a simple mistake like this that will undoubtedly be fixed soon doesn't warrant the amount of hate that's being directed at Apple at the moment.

There's no evidence that a widespread majority of ALL iPhone 4s have this issue. My friends who got one yesterday have zero problems. I even asked them to grip it tightly in that certain way, no problems.

What's truly pathetic here is you telling us it's pathetic. If you don't like it, then don't buy it. Apple introduces a product, of course it will say it's all revolutionary, awesome, terrific, etc. That's called marketing. Every company does it.

Even with thorough testing, bugs still will be present. If you think you can do a better job at testing, then by all means go find a job testing iPhones or whatever phone you want. Don't stand here calling us who pathetic when you have wrong or invalid data. That is pathetic.

Whoa!! That sounds like a sweeeet job.

Where do I sign up?

Honestly, the turn around time for Apple products and repairs amazes me.

Compare it to the Xbox 360.

Microsoft still hasn't fixed the Red Ring of Death issue completely, and they've had FOUR YEARS. And that's an issue that literally destroys their hardware and makes their customers go out and buy another copy.

And even they don't get the kind of flack that Apple is getting over a minor issue (atleast it can be avoided with a case and it doesn't destroy the phone), that will almost certainly be fixed within a month's time.

Why too many iPhone haters lately ?

I am starting to get frustrated with these Android users trying to find the smallest things about the iPhone and try to put it down for some kind of personal and sick satisfaction. A friend of mine is one of them, everytime something comes up on the news, he makes sure to comment on it ...! WTF !!
I just wanted to share my 2 cents...

The reception issues are serious. It's. It's not some small thing people are nitpicking about.

It's not really 2 cents, it's a pointless rant.

New phone and competition. People will always defend their purchases, just like you're trying to do with you friend now. ;)
