The Captivate is UGLY! If anything, I'd go for the Vibrant, but I hate that it has no flash (no pun intended).

I didn’t read every response here so I’m not sure if these things have already been mentioned.

I too am considering returning my week old iPhone 4 32GB even though there is a lot I like about as a new iPhone user. I have an Evo and that too was my first Android device and I already miss a lot of features it has that iOS does not have (just see my other thread about missing features). But the support for the iPhone is still well above Android. Chase just released a new app that allows you to scan checks rather than deposit them. Sure this may show up on Android someday but it’s on iOS right now and it’s of great use to a business owner like me right now.

Okay well the Captivate may not be to everyone liking but it does have a solid feel and the battery cover is metal unlike most of the other versions of the SGS (Samsung Galaxy S). It’s less than 1mm thicker than the iPhone yet it has that 1 inch larger screen.

The GPU is not the exact same version used in the iPhone, it’s actually a better version (Google it).

If it matters to you; the price is $100.00 less than the 32GB iPhone, so those of us with the 32Gb iPhone would get $100.00 back, which would be enough to purchase a 32GB Micro SD Card (as long as you can find it in stock online).

Samsung has made it clear that all Galaxy versions will get Android 2.2 sometime this year. Korea is getting it this month. With 2.2 comes Tethering, a few other great features and those insane speeds as reported on just about every 2.2 tested device.

The Galaxy has already been rooted and the same root method was just tested and working perfectly on the Captivate.

The battery will no doubt not be as good as the iPhone but just like all the other devices; spare batteries can be had on eBay for around 10 bucks.

Also some posts here mention the lack of flash and I say well, how did you get along without one on the iPhone for all of you past gen owners? Also is moving to Verizon is an option for you, the Verizon SGS version (The Fascinate) does have a rear flash but it does not have a front facing camera and only has 2GB of internal memory rather than 16GB like some of the SGS versions. But again with a 32GB card, that would put you at 34GB of total space (not as good as 16GB + 32GB, but a little better than the iPhone's 32GB total).

Screen too big, phone too big, phone is not an iPhone 4. That is all.

I don't mean this in a rude way, but I'm wondering if you are someone who has small hands and a small build? Have you seen the Capivate next to the iPhone? Remember, many devices with much larger screens than the iPhone are NOT all that much bigger than the iPhone. It's just that the iPhone doesn't use as much of the front surface as other devices do. I have an Evo, sitting right here next to my iPhone and I am 6'1 with mid-large skinny hands and the Evo (which is talked about as being "so big") fits right into my pockets and can be used with just one hand, just like I can do with the iPhone. I'm 29 years old but if I were a teenager again, I would probably think the iPhone was the perfect size.........

People were masturbating over the Droid, then the Nexus One, then the Incredible, then the EVO, the Droid X then the Captivate, all within 6 months. They're all essentially the same. If I wasn't interested in Android phones before, I'm probably not going to be now.

I'm getting a bit tired of countless threads talking about iPhone "killers" and how they make you jizz in the pants. There has been as many "killers" as there are months.

They're great phones, I'm not denying that, but they're not really bringing anything new to the table. People masturbate over how open and how awesome the future Android OS is going to be (Froyo this and Gingerbread that).

Yeah right. You'll have to upgrade your phone every 6 months at the least to keep up with all the software updates. No thanks!
Based on this post, I'd say it's been a while for ya. :(

Let's see if this $349 is legit because the Samsung Vibrant (T-Mobile version) was said to be going for $330 until the screenshots at their site states $499.99 I just find it hard to believe a high-end Samsung phone will go for that cheap. Too good to be true.

If this price is legit (we'll know by the 18th), I think this seems like the logical next step for unhappy iPhone 4 owners. If you have a 32GB iP4, you basically swap it with a contract-free Captivate and you still keep your upgrade and unrestricted free agent status. No mandatory data plans either.

Since I love by iPhone 4, I'm good for now. I just think Android is something NEW to me. It may not be a polished OS, but it is still a new experience. As much as I love my iP4, it essentially is the same UI and experience for me since 2008, just more refined and faster. I mean, we can change our homescreen wallpaper w/o JB! Big whoop! Jailbreaking spoiled me.

To the OP, I truly understand where you are coming from now. And for iP4 owners with problems, it seems like a great alternative and that unsubsidized price is hard to beat. Just keep your upgrade and use it next time. I hope this starts a trend to see more contract-free phones to be $350 or less instead of the $500-$700 unsubsidized price we normally see for a high-end phone.

From what I've been reading samsung has a less then stellar reputation with their phones. Its a bit ugly. While under the hood it appears to be an excellent phone, producing great camera results and speed. I'm not tempted.

What I am tempted is getting the Droid x. Large screen though the phone isn't ungainly large. Fast performer and its on the VZW network. HDMI port, supporting sideloaded content is a plus as well.

On a side note, I find it humorous people chide the size of these phones (EVO/Droid X/Captivate) is that apple if suddenly offered a 4" screen everyone would be lauding them at their innovation and ingenuity with suddenly coming up with a fresh idea - a larger screen :p

That exact scenario played itself out with multitasking.

Droid X wouldn't be an option for me on any carrier, just too large. Even if Apple came out with a phone that big I wouldn't bite. I'm a big guy with big hands, but I like a small phone for my pocket. Captivate is pushing it even. Personal preference though.

Captivate reivew.

Couple things killing about this phone, the no flash still bugs me, and the fact that HD video doesn't compare to Iphone 4.

The bigger screen is nice, but I know I'm going to notice the pixels. Damn you Apple, bring me back on Friday please.

:(

You're not making this easy.

Yeah, I'll believe that when I see it.

They already tried with the Nexus One. Guess what? They aren't following it up with a Nexus "Two."

Eh, despite...or is it because of....buying an iPhone 4, I find Google a lot more believable than Apple these days. Or most any other days, for that matter.

I own the Iphone 4 and I love it, I am however finding myself intrigued by the Samsung Captivate. I think it sucks there is no camera flash but in all honesty, I rarely use my phone camera and even more rare to use it in the dark.

Besides that, I do love me some iOS and the design of Apples Iphone. I don't have any issues (even though I can recreate the signal deal) though I do think Apple is being ridiculous. I'm also hesitant to give up the Retina display, but Super AMOLED is no slouch is it?

My work phone is a Droid Eris which is a poky sample of Android OS. I don't know, I think I'm just looking for someone to talk me out of the Captivate once and for all.

The phone comes out Monday and I have until July 23rd (my birthday) to decide.

Help!

:)

The phone comes out Sunday

Friday could be the deciding day. :)

I just got my phone 2 days ago and the speaker is out. Spent two hours on the phone with support with no luck. Taking it to the Apple store today so thay can look at. If they don't have any replacements in stock, ATT has already said they will take back the 4 back with a 10% restocking fee and I can get the captive.

I also noticed the reception issue on my 4, and my wife's 3gs drops a lot of calls. I think Toyota and Apple have the same quality control departments.

I like the flash on the camera for the iphone and i saw some comparisons the 4 and the Captivate on utube. The 4 seemed smoother. All my friends have iphones and they can give advice on apps and other iphone stuff. This is nice as it makes learning these devices easier. I would also prefer to buy from an American company vs Korean.

That being said the Captivate has that big 4" screen which for my older eyes would be sweet. I also like the openess of Android. Steve's rants on Flash are stupid and his I want to rule the world are going to be his ruin again as Android adoption soars.

It's probably going to come down to the Apple store having a replacement in stock. If they don't, it will be off to the ATT store to pick up my new Captivate, assuming they have them in stock

I don't think you'll have to pay the restocking fee at AT&T.

I'm very interested in the Captivate. Seeing as a modest team of hackers are already getting their hands on it, and Samsung is releasing the development code, this phone could be very customizable.

It all depends on Friday for me.

I dont like buttons that much. I love having an all touch screen phone! Since ive never owned an iPhone before now i dont think ill ever switch back.
