I too left iPhone for the Evo but just 2 days ago returned the evo. The battery was terrible and 4g (las Vegas) was bad as well. I never saw 3 down. Plus it drains your battery. Love the android OS though. Hopefully when they build better phones I might go back. Until then my iPhone 4 murders my evo in just about every way possible.
I'm hoping widgets, live wallpapers and some other features from Android will eventually find it's way unto the iPhone. It would totally make my day... :D

Hello Everyone. Yes i am new here to this forum. I have been an iphone user since the first one. I had cydia on my iphone before there was an app store. A long time before an official app store. I bought the latest iphone 4 and have mixed feelings.

I was hoping for something different i think. I didnt really know what. But something that could make my phone feel like i was getting a different experience again. Sort of like how i felt when i first got the iphone 2g. It may be that i have just gotten so bored from the same thing year after year.

I used to feel good to use my iphone in public. Now for some reason i actually feel a little embarrassed about it. I think the popularity of it combined with all the negative attention iphone users are starting to get has gotten to me. I try to ignore it but all the references to us being a bunch of fanboys and sheep may be getting to me.

So i was at a pre 4th of july cookout last night and a friend of mine was their with a HTC EVO. We were comparing the 2 phones and my iphone just seemed like a toy. I thought EVO having such a big screen was going to make it seem huge, but it really didnt. I tried to joke about the size and my friend tested me by putting both in my pockets (iphone in right EVO in left) and i really couldnt tell which phone was in which pocket. It seems the EVO is very very pocketable for having a 4.3 inch screen.

So then i pulled the "retina display" angle. Well when everyone was comparing the 2 phones they all agreed that the screen resolutions looked the same to us. In fact i hate to say it but web sites actually looked better on the EVO because the iphone browser cuts the amount of text down so much. Plus the browser scrolling on the iphone was so much slower for some reason.

Then our folder system just isnt a match for the widgets on the EVO. They really had a customizable UI. While we get page after page of icons.

I must say after this i am starting to wonder why we are stuck on this 3.5 inch screen? After all our iphone has such a huge bezel that i am sure apple could have stretched the screen some.

So do any of you iphone users that have been using the same phone for a few years now share in this feeling? Does it bother any of you that iphone comes with this perception and feeling of being controlled by Steve Jobs and apple?

Thanks guys..... I guess there is no perfect phone.
Sounds like you used to be comfortable because the iphone was unquestionably the best phone available. That of course has changed and there are phones that have advantages (and disadvantages) over the iphone.

I like engadgets Evo/iPhone 4 comparison.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/25/iphone-4-or-evo-4g-which-one-should-you-get/
They lay out the advantages and disadvantages of both pretty well. Pick which features are more important to you, don't worry what others think, the phone is meant for you, not others.

You're seriously worried that people are whipering about you behind your back because of what phone you use?

Return your phone. Sell it. Get an Evo.
It is sad, isn't it, that the OP is worried of what people think of the phone they have. Just sad. It's like saying "Is this in fashion? Should I really have this in public places?" Come on. The Evo is a bunch of hurt anyway. Stick with what you got. :apple:

+ 1. iPhone for me, though.

I think a lot of people really need to put things in perspective - I guess I just don't care about all the little widget things, or the jailbreaking, etc...

I'm happy to have a solid phone with a gorgeous display that I am able to have all of my email accounts sycn with and just use it as a phone.
People are getting pissed because they can't add pretty little icons, cool little sounds, sweet little widgets...I just don't have time for all of that stuff.

Maybe I'm just jealous that I don't care about that stuff?

Is there anybody else out there like that?

I think it's important that you choose a phone that you like, and not one that you think will make you look cool.

Suppose you get an EVO. You will eventually talk to some people who will tell you that the EVO is a phone for nerds and that it's not well designed and how the iPhone is for those who care about a good design. In the end, you are the one who decides what features you care on a phone. I also think you don't have to ridicule a person who owns an EVO, either. Could it just be that both the EVO and the iPhone are nice phones with good features?

Personally, I've seen the EVO and iPhone screens and do think that the screen is nicer on the iPhone. I don't care about having more screen estate, but I do care about a carefully thought out GUI. In fact, I'm not one to add widgets and widgets, because I feel Apple is better than me at figuring out where to position UI elements.

I prefer the cloud services offered by Android-based phones. I can only hope we'll get some of those, although I know Google is better positioned to offer those types of features. However, I truly feel an iPhone is a superior phone overall, with much finer attention to detail.

I think liking my phone is all that matters. If you don't feel the same way, perhaps you should take some time and explore what phones there are and which one you truly see yourself using.

As much as you want to think perception of other does not play into your decisions in life, they do. In all of us. Dont act like you dont wear clothes that look nice because you want others to look at you favorably. Or your haircut. Its only when someone doesnt like something people like you try to say others opinions dont matter.

But i guess its sad that i am man enough to accept it and realize that i do care what people think. Any yes i wont walk around in public places with a blinking blutooth on my ear either.... Why? Because i and many people think a person with a blutooth on looks like an idiot.

So yes. Public perception does matter to me. And as much as you refuse to admit it, it matters to you. No matter how terrible you may look and dress. You still care.

I do agree with most of whats said here. The iphone is a very polished predictable phone that gets amazing support from apple. Since its their only phone we dont have to wait months for fixes and updates. that is a big advantage. But its also a disadvantage.

How? Maybe everyone doesnt want 128 icons in rows. maybe everyone doesnt want 3.5 inch displays. I wish apple would make 3 different iphones. Then maybe we can have the option of Widgets and screen sizes.

Another big advantage to iphone that not many could argue is 3rd party developer support. the app store really shines compared to the evo market. We get so many quality choices at cheaper prices. But they get apps that can change the UI. Different web browsers, different music players ect. So each has advantages.

The competition is good. It should help us if Apple would just listen to market trends and stop thinking we should all be happy conforming to their box.

Well, you already have an iPhone, so just ask your friend if you can borrow his phone for a little bit to play around and see if you like it better and if you do take your phone back and get an evo. Really only you can decide what's best for you, personally I don't really like android and feel those phones with the 4.3" screens are too big for me. I get what your saying vein bored with ios, I felt the same way, but I recognize that the new hardware with ios4 fits my needs better than other phones out there.

I do agree with the OP that the opinion of others in many ways shapes our behavior. However, the opposite is also true. People who set trends usually are not afraid of going against defined perceptions of what's proper.

In this case, deciding between an EVO and an iPhone has enough supporters in both sides that it's really better to think of it as a personal choice which is unlikely to affect the perception others have of you.

Good post. I consider my self a fanboy and I have been experiencing the embarresement you refer to also. We've only had it like 9 days but the negativity is so wide spread that even people that you would not guess have heard about it ask me "are you having any problems? Heard there's a lot of problems"

I really do love the whole Apple experience but now in a world where there is Android I don't think Apple experience is enough. If it wasn't because of the Jailbreak community I would switch. I'd rather carry a portable charger and a capable phone then a phone that doest what it does really really good but just to tied/limited down at the same time. Here hoping we get a jailbreak for iPhone 4 soon...as long as there is hope for that I'm sticking with iPhoone.

The problem is that diehard admitted Apple haters will listen and grab onto any comments made by iPhone users. For instance, when an iPhone user talks about how cool facetime is, the other person will say "WELL you can only do it via wifi. and they've been doing that in japan for the longest. so lame".
Then they will talk about how cool their screen looks, and the other person will say "mine is bigger and brighter, so i'm cooler".
Then you have bs advertisements, sometimes from fanbois, sometimes from the manufacturer themselves, that not only can their phone do a number of wild, cool things that the iPhone can't , but that it will single handedly kill the iPhone. Then when it doesn't, they'll say "well....i mean....well apple only comes out with one phone a year so i mean shoot I know we only sold five of these HTC superbitchinawesomeincredibles but on the NEXT model, yeah we'll show them then. Sound the horns, we're going Apple picking!"

I didn't stick with Apple because they were 'teh cool' or the most marketed. I got my iPhone (all three of them) because they worked and they worked damn good. My old windows mobile phones(HTC Exaclibur/Dash, T-Mo Wing) never worked as well, nor did my blackberries or standard dumb phones (of course). Yes, consider me a 'drone' because I have the exact same phone as...what..1.7 million other people, but that means that when an App is designed for one phone, we can all use it. If I go to an airport and happen to need some overpriced iAccessories, there will undoubtedly be a stand catering to my exact model. If my iPhone blows up in my face while i'm in louisiana or new york, I can walk up to my nearest Apple store and get a replacement on the spot. I couldn't do that with any of my other phones and i'm doubt you can get that sort of service with any of the current gens without any hassle.

If you want an HTC (which is a local company for me so i'm not biased :D) then go ahead, get one and be happy. But if i'm enjoying my phone and the experience, don't look over my shoulder and give me a play by play of how lame you think my phone is compared to yours.

I can't believe some of these comments are for real.

I work in the arts. My livelihood depends on what other people think of me and my work.

But seriously, a phone? Anyone who would judge you harshly based on what phone you carry is not someone worth knowing. And anyone who would change their behavior based on someone else's opinion of what phone is "cool" is not someone I would want to know.

Totally agree. I'm hoping cloud-like services will come to all iOS devices soon (Apple's September music event (rumors), perhaps?). :apple:

Wow. Very nice post, dude! Love it! :D + 10.

I just picked up the EVO for my business line. I have the iPhone on my private line. The iPhone syncs with my contacts and calendar in my office and never leaves my side. I import my calendar weekly to the EVO, it is more important that the iPhone be up to date. With that said, I love both phones with the iPhone being my true love. It Is simply quicker at getting things done. Android has lots of great features and is a terrific competitor to the iPhone. Since so many handsets leave users with different experiences, it is hard to say you will think the same of a droid that you do of an eris that you do of a Nexus One that you do of an Evo. I think the one handset feature of the iPhone helps with the iOS interface. There are many apps and features of the android that don't translate from one handset to the next.

iPhone takes superior photos and video, but no live wallpaper like android. Then again, with the iPhone layout, you can't really see it in the background. HTC sense is a nice splash screen, which should be an option for your iPhone lock screen without jail breaking. So I guess I am crediting HTC's implementation of android rather than the operating system itself. It is quick, but no iOS. Notifications pull down is sweet, but get wonky when going into the app like mail or something else to see what it is telling you.

iPhone is the better phone (not talking about service). Onehanded operation is natural whereas the EVO requires two hands to operate consistently and can suffer from a lot of accidental screen touches by holding it normally. Also, the Evo is simply not a pocket phone. Since it is my phone that my clients/other attorneys call me on, it will more likely than not be in my briefcase solving that dilemma.

Evo media player is lame. Wouldn't imagine using anything other than an apple product for music...

Both are great phone that offer compelling. Having both and loving both, iPhone wins every time.

I must say after this i am starting to wonder why we are stuck on this 3.5 inch screen? After all our iphone has such a huge bezel that i am sure apple could have stretched the screen some.

Now that Apple has made such a big deal about their screen, they have tied their own hands with size limits.

Jobs referenced 300 PPI, so they could go up to 3.8" with a 960x640 screen.

each to their own i think..i went from a avid nokia user to the iphone3g..then 3gs..but am giving the iphone4 a miss....iv gone to a Android HTC Desire..great phone..in many ways better than the iphone..and in return the iphone is a great phone ...again in many ways better...all modern smartphones are great..the only problem with apple is they seem to think that their phone warrents a ridiculus price tag!!!...i mean £600 for a payg phone...cloud cuckoo land i think....going to stick with android for a couple of years and see which is the best platform then...android or ios4....soory to say at the moment android is the best..especially with froyo 2.2 out and gingerbread 3.0 on the way...major steps up in each realease..

HALLELUJAH!

This is probably the best comparison of EVO and iPhone I have read. The man uses both, thinks each one is best at something and tells you what that is and why. He has a favorite but acknowledges what the other one does best. He talks about the advantages and disadvantages regarding things that regular users would do.

I was seriously considering the EVO and the iPhone and I think this review has helped me a lot. Well done.

My two cents

It really just comes down to options. Androids give you freedom and the iphone doesnt. But iphone makes that up in other places. Ie Quality apps, Music.

However I will say that Apple better start getting it together soon. Google is making major leaps.

I got an EVO and I think I made a mistake...

Ok folks,

So yeah, I went out and got an EVO a few weeks ago thinking that I really, really wanted to give Android a shot. I have 15 days left of my "30 Day Trial Period". I DO like Android but I can say, without regret, that it isn't as polished as iPhone OS. That said, given the issues that Apple was having with the antenna, I thought I was making a good choice.

So here are my thoughts. The Android Marketplace has a long way to go. I still believe that the best Apps are still being developed for the iOS. That isn't to say that there are not any truly great Apps available for Android, just not the great variety. Especially games, which to be honest- I used my iPhone for a lot of gaming since my 8 month old arrived in lieu of my Xbox. The games available for the EVO are lacking.

The software, though very customizable, just isn't as polished as iOS. It's great but I find it less intuitive to make a call. It's not difficult, just takes more actions than I would like. I just haven't felt the "wow" that I thought I would. I don't know that I would get it from the iPhone 4 either but I guess I find myself in need of familiarity. Lot's of folks have said it takes a while to get accustomed to Android and the contrast that it represents. I can definitely agree with that. Call me simple, or not smart, or whatever- that's fine. I write code for Flash and a variety of applications and that doesn't mean I have to like Android. I liked my 3G because it was easy, reliable, well-made and fun. I like my EVO because it has a big lovely screen, customizability...
and that's about it. I just haven't found it fun yet. Maybe I will, maybe I should give it some more time?

I'm sure this kind of thread has been thrown around here many times before so this is probably another waste of space. I just need some thoughts and opinions.
