So, here we are almost a year later, is anyone other than me still watching NBC's The Office? I think the last 2 episodes have been some of the best yet. They've definitely been improving since they started off on their own episodes, although the humor is definitely different than the British version. I find myself wincing a lot less at this version, so it seems to be headed more in the direction of a standard sitcom, rather than the make everyone uncomfortable type humor in the original.

I'm interested to see if it can survive after Jim and Pam get together since that's essentially what the British version centered on and concluded with and it looks like they are on track to get them together by the end of this season or early next season.

The Office:US was cancelled here after two episodes. It received such dismal ratings that whoever it was carrying it just filled the slot and it was never heard of again. The British version rated it's arse off and lives on in DVD sales.

Same with Coupling, I love the British one but the US version just seems hollow and forced - it's almost the exact same script but it just feels totally wrong.

That's a bit of a shame since the third episode was the first one that wasn't a direct copy of the British version. It's actually when it started to become it's own series and more than just a bad copy...

NBC is evidently fairly happy with it since they kept it around for this season and put it on their biggest night.

I watched last night, and the US version definitely pales in comparison to the British version. The part with them holding the cards to their foreheads was pretty funny, though.

Having said this almost a year ago, I have to say that I uh...disagree with myself now :)

I still like the BBC version better, but the US version has gotten much better since the first few episodes. I still say Carell kind of over-acts in this role. He's less believable as the 'crappy boss' compared to Gervais. Some of the things he does, they just seem so forced...I can't help but think to myself "geez, no boss is that stupid."

I've watched every episode of the US version... I think it's brilliant. The looks that the characters give the camera every time Michael does something stupid are priceless.

Last night's revelations were well done... Dwight, of course, is completely clueless; we now know something about Oscar that I never would have guessed; Jim *says* he's over his crush on Pam, but Michael's cut-off admission to Pam now leaves her (and us) wondering if that's really so. (Jenna Fischer is seriously cute as Pam.)

Given the nature of US sitcoms vs. British sitcoms, I think they will be able to stretch out the Jim/Pam relationship quite a while longer... British sitcoms typically have VERY short seasons (6 episodes?) while US sitcoms have longer seasons (22-26 episodes), and in order for The Office to be syndicated, they'll need at least 80 episodes... so it may be years before we get some resolution there.

Yes, still watching. I'm also starting to get into "My Name is Earl", which I didn't care much for at first.

I still have never seen the original. I'm not avoiding it, it has just never come to the local video rental place and I don't want to buy the DVDs.

I don't know what the timing will be with regards to their getting together, but it will almost certainly kill the show. I'm old enough to remember what a great show "Moonlighting" was, and how much a part of the show the sexual tension between Dave and Maddy was. When those two lead characters finally hooked up, the show really died.

Yep, still watching The Office...the first couple of episodes were horrible (due to the exact copy of the British version) and there were a few more painful ones early on, but the show has definitely improved.

I wasn't quite as impressed with last night's show as some of the others...not quite enough laughs for my taste.

Fortunately, the move to Thursday nights and the iTunes exposure seem to be working for NBC. Ratings are surging over the last few weeks, so hopefully they'll keep it going.

And yes, I've also seen every episode of My Name Is Earl...episode quality varies a lot, but it's usually a good time.

I have no idea when this aired, if it ever did in the US, so some may have seen it, but i'm fairly sure none of the brits here will have seen this...and they must!

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I remember it very vividly, just as I remember my shock and horror as I sat in front of my computer watching this pilot episode. "What have they done to my favorite show," I thought.

Fast forward to this week. NBC just aired a repeat of the pilot, and I actually enjoyed it. My wife and I "accidentally" started watching The Office mid-way through last season, and... it wasn't so bad. By the end of the season, we actually liked it... looked forward to it, even. This summer NBC has been showing two episodes back-to-back, and it's official: It's a darn good show. I think the more recent episodes are stronger than the pilot was, but I'm looking forward to seeing the entire first season, just to see how things evolved.

Has anyone else had such a change of heart? Gone from hater to fan?

I've been afraid to watch it since I liked the UK version so much, but I heard some good things about it, so I may go ahead and watch the US version.

I actually like The Office (both versions) and this thread just made me feel like a complete idiot...

I thought it was going to be bad when I first heard about it. IMO, the first couple of episodes weren't that great, but I found it got better and better as it went on. There have been some really funny episodes ("Diversity Day" comes to mind), and some of the interaction between Dwight and Jim is just priceless.

Ah yes, thanks for bringing this thread back up to the top. Yes, the first couple of episodes were painful to watch as they tried to copy the UK version almost line for line. But it really has grown into its own, and the My Name Is Earl / The Office block has become the funniest on US television these days.

I like the office. It is certainly better than watching episodes of "Keeping Up Appearances" (british comedy) from 1990 on Public Television.

"Performance Review", "Basketball", and "The Alliance" are my favorites - I actually discovered the office via iTunes (I wanted to test out the TV show features), and I've downloaded every episode of both seasons since.

Thanks for bringing the thread back (seriously, pretty funny thread...) - too bad the link doesn't work anymore :(

The Office...Official Thread!

Ok, I have been gone for quite awhile from MR and I did some searches for the television show The Office, and nothing came up except for MS Office threads, so I am officially starting this since the season 4 premiere is this Thursday!!! Is anyone else as excited as I am??!! :)

I am! I'm going to Coldstone around 8:30 (the line will probably be long) and then getting ready to watch it. I'm sure it'll be a great start of the season.

Oh yeah! I think so too! I am loving how Season 3 finale ended with Jan and Michael and Ryan becoming the boss, and Jim asking Pam out and her saying YES, FINALLY! :)

well...its not really the official The Office is it now..

And I think there might have been a thread or two already on it.

there is not way to judge or gauge excitement... but if there were you would know that i am just as excited if not slightly more excited than you. is this a contest, no.... we all win when the office is involved

Yesss, I've been looking for an Office thread.
I'm so excited for season 4. I think the first episode is called Fun Run.

NBC made a game called Dunder Mifflin Infinity. It's supposed to be DM's Intranet. It starts on the 27th. I think there's an episode based off of this.
