looks good. if it has no screen effect with the higher resolution i think i will finally buy it.

Please update the story to note that Meta increased the cost of the Quest 2 a year ago. And they are lowering it to appear like it’s a cheaper alternative. When in reality it costs the same as it was originally launched for.

I’m not really sure why this detail is a huge deal.

They lowered the price to make it a cheaper alternative — not to make it appear like one.

Also, the $299 model was 64gb, and now it’s 128gb. Hell, it’s technically cheaper than it ever was.

It’s incredibly deceptive of Meta to do that.

Nothing seems deceptive about this.

This reeks of rushing the announcement. Also that they put this out today but who knows if they will try to cram in new features by September based on what Apple announces.
Maybe this announcement appears rushed to you because you didn't know that Meta had revealed in their third quarter 2022 earnings report (and during the conference call) 7 months ago that they had already planned to release the Quest 3 in the second half of 2023.

"We expect the slight majority of our 2023 expense dollar growth to be driven by operating expenses, with the remaining growth coming from cost of revenue. We expect the percentage growth rate of 2023 operating expenses to decelerate meaningfully as we curtail non-headcount related expense growth and keep 2023 headcount roughly flat with current levels. Conversely, our growth in cost of revenue is expected to accelerate, driven by infrastructure-related expenses and, to a lesser extent, Reality Labs hardware costs driven by the launch of our next generation of our consumer Quest headset later next year."

Not the first time we have seen desperation in advance to an Apple major product announcement.
Looks cool however very bad timing on Meta's part. Desperate for attention!
Announced now just to mitigate the embarrassment level if they'd done after June 5.
Desperation? 🤣

It's common practice for companies to announce a product a month or so before it officially goes on sale. That's what Meta is doing here. Meta already said 7 months ago during the 3rd quarter 2022 earnings report that the Quest 3 was coming in latter part of 2023.

VR reminds me of the push for 3D movies. I was actually stupid enough to buy a 3D tv about 10 years ago and used it once to watch Avatar. That fad died (again). It has several times over my lifetime. The coolest attempt at 3D was the Nintendo 3DS since it didn't require a headset. I think most people abandoned it right away after they realized you had to be looking at just the right angle for it to work. I feel like 3D and AR/VR will only ever get wide spread adoption once the hardware is nothing more than what appears to be a regular pair of glasses. Even then I don't know if anyone will want to use them - look at how many people get LASIK, because they don't want to be bothered with wearing glasses.

The thing with META and sony and few other is they have had a head start with VR for a while now but does not mean the iterations they have put out are game changing since most are upgraded hardware changes each time to catch up with current new tech available and most suited for gamers. Apple is basically taking all that information and past experiences of what others have tried and jumping 2-3 paces higher than current headsests to potentially highlight the capabilities and possibilities of what evolutionary hardware or possibility of how the X VR os will blend well its hardware. Plus gaming is not its sole purpose on this first iteration, yet.

It's been a while since we have seen a new totally different product release from Apple. I just hope its accessible enough for people to buy if they choose, but then again, remember the airpods max headphone which was neat, but pricey, heavy. Will be sitting with popcorn for lunch monday afternoon with excitement.

Think about the Apple headset as a tool for developers, and for high-end apps/experiences. The software and content developed with this first-
generation headset will pay off in the general consumer space when the cost of technology/manufacturing comes down.

I'll stick with my Quest 2 since I only use the thing for PCVR anyway, so the extra performance in that new Snapdragon is worthless to me. Plus I'm holding out for PSVR 2 or Apple Reality having PCVR compatibility in the future.

specially considering how much apple charges for memory upgrades.
Hah, I almost mentioned that, but Meta is also making absurd margins on storage.

Though.. Apple still charges $150 to upgrade from 64gb to 256gb on iPhone SE 🤮. Most expensive consumer flash storage on earth.

I don't see myself wearing anything over/on my head. I already wear glasses because I have to and it sucks.

What's wrong with glasses? Glasses rock

How do those headsets play with people who wear glasses ? Myopia etc
I have a Quest 2. It's not super comfortable to wear, but it's do-able to play some VR games for up to an hour or so (more typically ~30 minutes). There are companies though that sell prescription lens add-ons that I would consider buying if I wanted to really dive in more.

If you want to dabble in it though, using these things with glasses isn't a huge deal to see if you like it.

There's no ***** way I'm spending $3000 on something that'll be worth $3 in 10 or 15 years. I'm sure Apple will have its diehards, but that's too rich for my blood. The $499 for the Quest 3 is more interesting.
I'm pretty sure Meta Quest and Apple's Headset are two very different products with two equally different use cases and demographics in mind.

I find it quite amazing how everyone has just skimmed past Apple verbatim writing "a new era begins" as a tagline for WWDC.

Another VR/AR headset that's just running some sleek Apple-esque UI, with a nice, shiny metal finish on the hardware side is not the beginning of a new era for Apple and not something anyone except wealthy tech collectors would pay $3000 for.

This is going to be far more than that.

This a completely new product category and Apple's biggest bet in more than a decade.

Please forget this Meta-junk and get hyped for what might be the most import new consumer electronics product in the next 5-10 years.
