It'd be cool if it were; even if it were twice the price of the Quest I'd be interested. I mean, it's no secret why the Quest is cheap, since it requires an FB account, and therefore they get all that data.

it is cheap because zuck bet the whole future of meta on vr and he is desperate to get people in headsets stat

The bot accounts are real. Nearly everyone I know has abandoned FB. I realize that is only a couple hundred users but it is still telling. I left 3 years ago and I've never regretted it for a second. But to each their own.
🤣 And yet 25% of the world's population uses Facebook on a daily basis and almost 40% of world's population uses Facebook on a monthly basis.

  • Facebook daily active users (DAUs) – DAUs were 2.04 billion on average for March 2023, an increase of 4% year-over-year.
  • Facebook monthly active users (MAUs) – MAUs were 2.99 billion as of March 31, 2023, an increase of 2% year-over-year.

I just don't see the use case for a portable device with virtually infinite workspace, high performance yet low-energy modern Apple processors, LiDar for realtime environment measurements, facial and body tracking, modern communications, resolution that rivals many competitors' desktop sized monitors, an operating system that provides continuity between a stack of other devices, and a whole new space for innovative new ways to immerse in content, worlds, communication, and opportunities. I also don't see the use case for electric vehicles, solar power, or the wheel. This product is dead on arrival.

You mean the third version of this product (after several others with different names) is desperation? They are just doing their thing since long before Apple was even rumoured to release something in this sector. Apple is the only one who has to prove something, Oculus/Meta already proved they can release a good product at a reasonable price point. Can Apple do the same?
Are you actually pretending like this announcement wasn't timed specifically because of Apple's keynote next week? Especially when the Meta Connect conference is in September?

Like really?! 😂

Maybe this announcement appears rushed to you because you didn't know that Meta had revealed in their third quarter 2022 earnings report (and during the conference call) 7 months ago that they had already planned to release the Quest 3 in the second half of 2023.

"We expect the slight majority of our 2023 expense dollar growth to be driven by operating expenses, with the remaining growth coming from cost of revenue. We expect the percentage growth rate of 2023 operating expenses to decelerate meaningfully as we curtail non-headcount related expense growth and keep 2023 headcount roughly flat with current levels. Conversely, our growth in cost of revenue is expected to accelerate, driven by infrastructure-related expenses and, to a lesser extent, Reality Labs hardware costs driven by the launch of our next generation of our consumer Quest headset later next year."

Desperation? 🤣

It's common practice for companies to announce a product a month or so before it officially goes on sale. That's what Meta is doing here. Meta already said 7 months ago during the 3rd quarter 2022 earnings report that the Quest 3 was coming in latter part of 2023.
"Latter part of 2023"

Last I checked this is not the latter part of 2023. You just proved their desperation with your choice of words, well done.

VR has been a dying market but at least they lowered the price to keep it from completely dying.

Meta really thought they were doing something here. Like they’re gonna steal apple’s thunder when apple is probably gonna release something thinner, lighter, way better tech that actually gets people excited. Putting this ad out there just helps people emphasize “See what the competition is? Bulky ugly headsets with legacy controls“

like if blackberry emphasized cheap plastic keyboards right before the iphone announcement

No mention of Metaverse? says a lot about it haha...
but I would probably buy it just for BeatSaber, Pistol Whip, Eleven or LesMills Bodycombat :) if it's more comfortable it's worth it haha
We all experience the metaverse. It is full of little kids screaming profanities and racial slurs as load as they can. The squeakers have ruined most multi person experiences, which is why I stop doing anything with VR awhile again.

Now true AR I would be interested in. I really like my NReal glasses and what they have to offer. Extend those and you have something.

Haha 40% thinner excluding the facial interfaces. Sure but now the "facial interfaces" are much thicker to make up for it. What a joke, just to able to hit that number. In reality the headset is barely thinner than the Quest 2.

There's no ***** way I'm spending $3000 on something that'll be worth $3 in 10 or 15 years. I'm sure Apple will have its diehards, but that's too rich for my blood. The $499 for the Quest 3 is more interesting.
I'm mostly interested in cheap copycats from China coupled with some open source OS and can use it with old and new tech. I'm sure Apple will be limiting the headset compatibly to latest iDevices and macs to boost sales.

That just looks so uncomfortable to put on your head for an extended period of time.
The weight is not such a problem. It’s having something strapped to your face, pressing on your cheekbones, with a still somewhat limited field of view that becomes tiring after a while. But playing Alyx for two hours is something you have to experience for yourself… it’s quite impressive.

Having said that: please please Apple, provide a way to throughput video from my PC to those glorious dual 4K screens, I beg you!!😌

Facebook parent company Meta today announced the Quest 3, its next-generation mixed reality headset launching later this year.

Last I checked this is not the latter part of 2023. You just proved their desperation with your choice of words, well done.
Announcing a product today that will be available in latter part of 2023. How is that desperation?

It's no different than how Apple announced their high yield savings account on Oct. 13, 2022, but didn't make it available until 6 months later on April 17, 2023.

Or how Apple announced AirPower in 2017 and said it would launch in 2018 before ultimately canceling it in 2019. Was Apple desperate?

Wow...that Meta Gaming Showcase sucked. The only standouts was Vampire The Masquerade Justice, Bulletstorm VR, and Asgard's Wrath 2.

Yeah I don't think Apple has anything to worry about lmao

This seems so cringe.

It’s not that much different to the 2nd gen model. They’ve not moved the operating system forward and it still looks like a heavy but cheap plastic headset. It’s a hard pass for me.

I agree someone made that rumor, and everyone ran with it. If it does somehow cost that much, I suspect it will be more driven toward developers and professionals like doctors.
I don’t think they would make the cost of entry for developers to build content and apps for an uncertain category that high. What they will do instead is simply charge 500 for a dev kit with a Apple developer account. Developers who actually build solutions and return the dev kit will get a significant discount on the final product.

That's good, I see countless complains online though if I type in "is quest vr comfortable"
I had the Quest Pro from about 2 weeks and it was SUPER uncomfortable. I returned it. Quest 3 has a similar padding to the Quest 2, so it will be fine.
