Or just go to a real gym and save your eyesight among other things. You know, real stuff experience kinda thing

Just Pre-ordered one. I have the Quest 2, and I freaking love it. I use it mostly for gaming, but I've probably lost 20 pounds thanks to Beat Saber and Pistol Whip alone.

If it can actually motivate me to be more active, then it's worth it for me. Not to mention the possibilities as a developer!

I know I’m probably being unnecessarily cynical but I still don’t know what the purpose of a device like this is. And I don’t think Meta have quite figured it out either.

And I’m not limiting my cynicism to Meta either. The same applies equally to Apple. If, as rumoured, their AR/VR device comes with a price tag upward of $2500 then one would expect it to do some pretty special things but I haven’t yet heard a single compelling use case. Sure, you can have a video conference on it, but is that really so much better than doing the same thing in a widescreen monitor?

Meta’s product page for the Quest Pro is interesting as there is very, very little detail on how they intend the product to be used. There’s lot of nice pictures of beautiful people wearing their shiny new headset but there’s absolutely zero demonstration of what they’re seeing or doing. Meta lists supposed technology partners, with no information on what they’re bringing to the platform.

To be clear, AR and VR have their uses. Some of the games we play in future are going to be incredible. Beyond that, no-ones’s yet made a case that justifies the cost.

My worry is that Apple are going to do another Home Pod.
Study the market, Think they can do better, come out with something too high end and expensive. Cancel it, and then release a lesser cheaper option.

well imo it's way too pricey, but is it short-sited for me to think that without immense gaming support VR like this will never be successful? or at the very least a couple very-popular franchises in full VR - like from Nintendo or the Sims or something like that?

Educate yourself on AR (augmented reality). Or let your imagination wander just a bit.

There are loads of both personal and commercial/business "use cases." Seriously.

how do you know that apple respects your privacy?
Do you know how I know that Apple, or at least some people at Apple, respect my privacy?
If they didn’t, Siri would be a lot better.
Google and Amazon couldn’t give the slightest care about my privacy, and they have the two best voice assistants on the market. They throw tons of personal data into that thing with very little regard to privacy, and the assistants work way better than Siri.
Meanwhile, outside of optional audio recordings, I know Siri is collecting very little about me, because it knows almost nothing about me, and it suffers for it. But because none of the responses I get from it are personal at all to me, I know it’s not collecting anything from me.
Apple actively has the worst assistant on the market, in the name of privacy. They don’t have to, they could easily have one of the best, but they choose not to because of their public privacy stance.
If having one of the worst solutions on the market in the name of privacy, isn’t enough to convince you that someone ant Apple cares, I don’t know what will.
And yes, I know Apple have messed up in the past, they don’t have a 100% clean track record, no one company does.

Mark, I think you lost your 💩 mind…🚽

But for $1,500 I can make a mind for you in Cinema 4D

They are using the same SoC for the pro version ? that little + annotation is usually fluff , maybe a bit more frequency or a bit more memory support , but that's not a good look for them to not be able to get new silicon for this new pro device.

VR is emerging.

I don't understand how several have replied with "what is the purpose?"

Ugh. Reminds me of Steve Ballmer laughing about the iPhone cost, touch screen. VR has an awful lot of interesting uses. Meta Quest 2 was $249 when I got it and felt like a steal. I can sit at my mid range computer and be "in an airplane" on Flight Simulator. In the driver seat of a car. I can play golf. All pretty neat, part of my gaming setup now I would not want to be without.

These are just scratching the surface of what this will be able to do. It could become so useful for work, telecommuting, meetings. Right now it's mostly just for fun, games, exercise. I have no idea how Apple will or should compete, but it's worth noting they are late on this instead of early. People already in the VR game aren't going to switch, this isn't like the iPad that came out and blew all the other tablets out of the water. People have to spend money on VR games. It's designed to lock you into an ecosystem.

I realize that Meta gets a lot of hate, but I’m more excited about this announcement than I have been about any of the Apple ones of late. Meta tries to show us behind the curtain in terms of research that they are doing and what they foresee as the next steps of the platform. While WWDC has done this to some extent, it’s limited in its scope, and feels in many ways stale.

What was the breakout feature in iOS 16? The Lock Screen. That’s the biggest change in iOS 16. You could say the new multitasking view in iPadOS but it’s all just small upgrades at this point.

Meta is trying to build a whole new category and I for one am all in.

Do I trust Meta more than I did before? Heck no. But at least they are trying something new and have some ‘courage’.
Trust is a big issue here. Once it's lost it's hard to get back, and that's not just companies but with anything or anyone. HARD PASS

Edit:
The price point ($1500) means no one, outside of hardcore nerds, will be getting this
Battery life of 1-2 hours. 2 hours to recharge?
This thing is DOA

It’s interesting to see that they’re using “pancake optics” which is what Apple is rumored to use as well.

A company called Kopin makes 2.6k oled see through pancake displays, and Apple is rumored to want 4k. Seems like these new micro displays are the future.

There doesn't look to be much of a jump in resolution for all that money. That's the most important thing I think these devices need. I imagine only Apple will have silicon powerful and efficient enough to make this a reality in the near future.

You lost 20lbs due to a change in diet, not standing and swaying your arms around. Lmao

Studies show exercise is actually largely ineffective for weight loss, and that’s literally running long-distance for massive cardiovascular energy expenditure. You standing and swaying your arms does next-to-nothing fit you.

However, if it makes you enjoy life more to live in that ignorance…I’m sorry I ruined it for you.
