These are just scratching the surface of what this will be able to do. It could become so useful for work, telecommuting, meetings. Right now it's mostly just for fun, games, exercise. I have no idea how Apple will or should compete, but it's worth noting they are late on this instead of early. People already in the VR game aren't going to switch, this isn't like the iPad that came out and blew all the other tablets out of the water. People have to spend money on VR games. It's designed to lock you into an ecosystem.

Apple's thrust will be AR, not VR. There are far more applications both commercial/business and personal for AR. Though VR for games, etc. will come along for the ride.

Literally the last thing people want to do for work, communicating and meetings is stick a helmet on.

Because you can do all those things better without it.

And who the **** wants to be in a meeting anyway? No matter how amazing your company and teams are, everyone wants to leave the meeting ASAP.

Apple: Privacy is a fundamental human right. It’s also one of our core values.

Meanwhile, iCloud+ which has great privacy features is a paid-for add-on.

Comical when they announced that and the fact that it costs money.

Meta verse now is too much in infancy and not really ready for mainstream. That being said, new devices such as these are progress and that’s what’s important. Will I buy it? No. Will it advance the technology towards desired goal state? We can hope.

You can do more than hope. Maturity is achieved THROUGH infancy. You can't jump to the end goal without growing up.

I'm not a fan of Facebook of old, but I think this new Meta business and their product design is a major step forward. I think they're doing some amazing work, and I applaud them. Apple has been upstaged, but who knows what Apple's headset will bring to the table.

Yes, here’s a favorite AR feature for you in the future:

When you’re passing that McDonald’s on your way to work, you’ll see an AR sign above it displaying a high-resolution, delicious breakfast sandwich; just $2.99 the sign says.

apple respects your privacy............ according to apple
When you make something the core value of your company, then you violate that core value, it destroys your company. Meta makes their money selling your data. Apple makes their money selling you products and services. If they ever get caught violating people's privacy, it will largely be the end of their company. Why would they risk that? (They are very explicit about how they collect data and how they use it. Is it perfect protection? No. It is very good.)

At least these marketing images aren't full of faces with gaping mouths ready for bugs to land inside

I don't see Apple being upstaged at all as it's not focused on VR, as Meta is. AR reaches greater and far different markets, across many disciplines, than VR.

My worry is that Apple are going to do another Home Pod.
Study the market, Think they can do better, come out with something too high end and expensive. Cancel it, and then release a lesser cheaper option.

"Apple Monocle AR/VR... same great AR/VR for 1 eye. We love it and are sure you will too. Starting at only $1499 and available..." ;)

I know I’m probably being unnecessarily cynical but I still don’t know what the purpose of a device like this is. And I don’t think Meta have quite figured it out either.

And I’m not limiting my cynicism to Meta either. The same applies equally to Apple. If, as rumoured, their AR/VR device comes with a price tag upward of $2500 then one would expect it to do some pretty special things but I haven’t yet heard a single compelling use case. Sure, you can have a video conference on it, but is that really so much better than doing the same thing in a widescreen monitor?

Meta’s product page for the Quest Pro is interesting as there is very, very little detail on how they intend the product to be used. There’s lot of nice pictures of beautiful people wearing their shiny new headset but there’s absolutely zero demonstration of what they’re seeing or doing. Meta lists supposed technology partners, with no information on what they’re bringing to the platform.

To be clear, AR and VR have their uses. Some of the games we play in future are going to be incredible. Beyond that, no-ones’s yet made a case that justifies the cost.
Their function is to sell you a product that violates your privacy while it shows you advertisements. They are getting you to pay money to sell your data while they show you commercials.

1.3x larger color gamut than Quest 2
1.37x ppi of Quest 2
Still "VR LCD" technology

And they call this pro? The Quest 2 was horrible. A 30% improvement in the display isn't going to cut it. Feels like going from 480p-like quality to 560p-like quality while we should at least quadruple it.

how do you know that apple respects your privacy?
I mean I don't know for certain, but privacy is a core philosophy of their brand and if it is discovered not to be true, the brand can suffer irreversible damage leading to catastrophic depreciation of its stock. Why would Apple self-sabotage?

You lost 20lbs due to a change in diet, not standing and swaying your arms around. Lmao

Studies show exercise is actually largely ineffective for weight loss, and that’s literally running long-distance for massive cardiovascular energy expenditure. You standing and swaying your arms does next-to-nothing fit you.

However, if it makes you enjoy life more to live in that ignorance…I’m sorry I ruined it for you.
I started working out quite a bit more. I started eating quite a bit more. I lost weight and gained muscle mass. To each their own.

Great, Meta introduced something before apple.
Guess what? There were people introducing touchscreen phones before the iPhone.
Wonder how you’ll feel about the quest pro after Apple has introduced their more privacy conscious, better implemented, more developed, much more interesting headset.
Meta has given me a bunch of impressive specifications on the screen, and not much else.
12 GB of RAM. Yay! What exactly is that being used for?
To ask the same question in a slightly different way that you asked, what is the breakout feature of the quest pro?
Because I guarantee you on announcement day of Apple’s headset, “12 GB of RAM” is not going to be a headline feature.
Just like how when Apple introduced the first iPhone, “2mp Camera and a 412MH cpu” wasn’t what anyone cared

It’s cool to imagine what potential hardware Apple has up its sleeve. But let’s be honest here. Meta has built an impressive offering, and is building partnerships with companies like Microsoft to build the future of enterprise/office work.

Perhaps Apple has built such a device, perhaps they have partnerships that they are leveraging, but history tells me that Apple’s device is going to be locked up tight, and not build towards what Meta is purposing here.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Apple, and I don’t love Meta. I think from purely a technology view, what Meta is purposing for the future, is absolutely the way it’s going to go. It’s almost inevitable. But the question is, are we going to approach this the way I believe Meta has and say have at it, or are we going to approach it the Apple way and say this is the way it is, suck it up buttercup.

I don’t think that for the metaverse to work the way that fiction has portrayed it(and how most people envision it), Apple’s past playbook is the best course of action. Perhaps I will be wrong if and when such a device comes from Cupertino. At this point, Meta is absolutely driving this industry, and it’s impressive to see the scope that they are thinking.

There are several breakout features on the Quest Pro, smaller size, pancake lenses, full-color pass through, lighter, the controllers are more intelligent, better processor, facial expression tracking, etc. Admittedly it’s not a fair comparison as the tech on smartphones in general has been fairly stale, but the big announcement for iPhone 14? They moved the notch down on the Pro, and integrated it into the software.

This is a major step forward for the industry as a whole, and while Apple may have something up its sleeve, it’s not clear what their vision of this future looks like. So, I can’t speak to any hypothetical launches of their products. Yes privacy is important to them, once they get caught (looking at you Siri recordings), but I think it’s important to note that other companies also can do things well.

How come the Meta avatar designs look years behind even something like Second Life? How can that be "the next big thing"?

With AR/VR, sometimes it's more about refresh rate than resolution.
