Nice try Gordon. Nobody's buying it. Good luck with your investments.

Nobody is selling it, if you think a message board forum post from a nobody affects a stock with over 2.5 billion shares outstanding, then I can't help you, but I will be sure to let you know if I purchase Meta stock.

Got it.

My post was satirical.
Sorry Zuck, you never sucked me in with facebook or instagram, you won't suck me in with this either...
Exactly. I've done the same, but their tracking cookies still come up on my machines because Meta pays other websites to track people who don't use their products. Pretty creepy and a big reason why I have little interest in their VR/AR offerings.

Apple isn't perfect, but I'd take their approach on user privacy above Zuckerberg's any day of the week.

The fact that by default you can see your real world periphery is either a statement of usage intent or a cash grab to upsell you a face gasket. But since this is already $1500 I'd guess the former. EDIT: oh

VR has such a hill to climb, that this (and Apple's) need to be marketed as a real monitor replacement. You have pass-through cameras which show your environment and you get to enjoy a 100" floating 'screen' in front of you. Or 3D floating windows and gesture control alongside traditional keyboard and mouse inputs to enhance how people currently use computers.

But all these demos just look what they are - fake and contrived. The avatar environment seems awful too. Even if it's just in the home where people don't mind so much about looking like a doofus, it could really change peoples workflow but no company is making a convincing argument yet.

I realize that Meta gets a lot of hate, but I’m more excited about this announcement than I have been about any of the Apple ones of late. Meta tries to show us behind the curtain in terms of research that they are doing and what they foresee as the next steps of the platform. While WWDC has done this to some extent, it’s limited in its scope, and feels in many ways stale.

What was the breakout feature in iOS 16? The Lock Screen. That’s the biggest change in iOS 16. You could say the new multitasking view in iPadOS but it’s all just small upgrades at this point.

Meta is trying to build a whole new category and I for one am all in.

Do I trust Meta more than I did before? Heck no. But at least they are trying something new and have some ‘courage’.

It’s a thin line between bravery and stupidity.

Meta is building very impressive tech, but it won't help after already losing everyones trust.

Great, Meta introduced something before apple.
Guess what? There were people introducing touchscreen phones before the iPhone.
Wonder how you’ll feel about the quest pro after Apple has introduced their more privacy conscious, better implemented, more developed, much more interesting headset.
Meta has given me a bunch of impressive specifications on the screen, and not much else.
12 GB of RAM. Yay! What exactly is that being used for?
To ask the same question in a slightly different way that you asked, what is the breakout feature of the quest pro?
Because I guarantee you on announcement day of Apple’s headset, “12 GB of RAM” is not going to be a headline feature.
Just like how when Apple introduced the first iPhone, “2mp Camera and a 412MH cpu” wasn’t what anyone cared about.

Agreed. Not sure why they detailed the RAM. However having actually owned and used the previous one, I can give an honest response. It is the size and format that is the killer sell. Apple's previous rumoured 'mock' style and size were highly praised and we all dreamed of a headset that is the size of ski goggles. Now here it is in real life!!

Can you imagine anything more obstructive to collaborative working environments than people sat at their desks with headsets on ignoring face to face contact though? VR certainly has its place, but I don’t see it as a standard mass adopted device used in every home and office in the world anytime soon.

And you thought Ready Player One was supposed to be fiction. Saddos. Go outside instead. This stuff will be the ruination of humanity. Most will scoff but that’s because they’re going to be part of the problem and are so myopic they’ll never even know. Enjoy your masturbation suits and intravenous food 👍

I really wish Apple would go back to being the innovator instead of the follower
Care to give a single recent example of just such an occurrence? Yeah, I won’t hold my breath.

Apple have never been first, just fairly often “best” instead.

Exactly. It’s utterly ridiculous to suggest a use case for VR being office meetings.

Or even social meetings. The future isn’t WALL-E (well, apart from the uninhabitable planet-wide thing maybe).

No thank you! Not trustworthy!

I will wait for Apple. I respect my privacy.

Beware false idols. Apple talks a good game but honestly these days I’m raising an eyebrow to their claims. Lock screens with a gaping multi-generational security hole in them that allows bad actors to take and upload unsolicited images to your account. Basically unencrypted backups of your entire device in iCloud. There’s more but hopefully my point is clear. Apple may be the lesser of many evils at the moment but trusting any corporation with your privacy is a bad idea.

It seems to me there is very little reason to get involved with the Metaverse, and spending 1500 dollars on a headset seems just an unnecessary expense. It’s not about the technology, it’s about what you do with it. As a value-creator, I see very little mileage in working with a headset, and as a value-absorber-slash-entertainment-device, I remain to be convinced that it will do a better job than a screen and a mouse.

A definite pass from me.

These AR/VR headsets seem amazing and cool, but for the price… no thanks, why would I want to spend upwards of £1500, or likely in Apples case £2000-£2500 on a headset to experience AR/VR when I can experience actual reality for free without wearing a headset.

I just feel like Apple entering this market will just end up flopping, firstly due to the high price but secondly the fact this is a novelty product IMO and something which will end up in the drawer after a couple of months.

The issue apple will have, is with the low user base of the product, how are they going to convince developers to put the money, time and effort into apps for it.

Even today, 12 years after the iPad launched (which will likely always have a larger user base than a headset), there are still millions of apps on the App Store that arn’t even optimised for the iPad, why, due to the fact their is a lack of user base for the developers to bother updating their apps for it.

I’m just not sure a AR/VR headset is going to be a product which will ‘improve my daily life’, which has always been apples line when launching a new products.

Just Pre-ordered one. I have the Quest 2, and I freaking love it. I use it mostly for gaming, but I've probably lost 20 pounds thanks to Beat Saber and Pistol Whip alone.

If it can actually motivate me to be more active, then it's worth it for me. Not to mention the possibilities as a developer!
Did you ever try walking?, it is said without digital aids the non VR is amazing.

My only interest in these "VR" headsets currently is whether they can used to deploy virtual desktops in a see-through environment (AR) so that I can use my normal mouse & keyboard with augmented displays around me. From the marketing photos of Quest Pro, it seems like this is possible now. Does anyone have an idea of how good the resolution and fidelity (both in the virtual desktop and real-world representation) is/will be?

Not really understanding all the hate here. I would guess that most in here have never owned an oculus device to know that the VR on them is actually really great and that it’s a really fun device to use. I have no doubts this product will be even better.

Hopefully this tech will filter down into the Meta quest 3. As $1500 is way over for the average consumer. I have zero faith in apple being able to compete in this space...unless they can break from tradition and release a good product on first release.

yes this device is doubling down on mixed reality and can do exactly what you're asking. Although the pass-through quality is 4x better than meta quest it's still one or 2 iterations away from being perfect

Apple: Privacy is a fundamental human right. It’s also one of our core values.

👇 👇 👇

They might respect your privacy but they DO NOT respect their users. Withholding technology and holding features for pro models is just wrong. Steve Jobs would hate modern Apple

So, it looks like a headset, got it. Nothing revolutionary about this product, just 'nother iteration of the headset that Oculus revolutionized.
yes we are still in the iteration phase of this Technology. Its taken 15 years for a phone to iterate into a great product that can now lasts more than 2 years.
