The Metaverse is already DOA

I would be careful with that prediction, I wonder if ten years from now people will be kicking themselves for not investing in Meta stock, if Meta rules the Metaverse maybe they could be the next stock juggernaut, if so I will probably be one of those people, maybe there won't be one huge winner, maybe a bunch of them, maybe AR will be king, is the Metaverse considered AR or VR or something else, not certain, where is the Biff Tannen book on stock investments.

I remember people telling me don't invest in Google in the weeks prior to their IPO, saying they don't make any money, people on CNBC were saying the same thing.

This product is aimed at a customer base of one: making the Zuckwit believe the billions he's burning on the metaverse whackery is actually accomplishing something.

I don't know, he or his acquisitions team were smart enough to buy Instagram, they tried to buy Snapchat, laugh at that if you want but Snapchat has hundreds of millions of users, that combined with WhatsApp could have ruled the instant messaging world, but yeah, WhatsApp was another smart purchase, I wonder if buying Meta stock now at $128 could prove to be an excellent move five to ten years from now.

People mocked Jeff Bezos back in the day.

It seems like the negativity over this is a combination of hatred for Meta and ignorance of the technology.

I don’t use any Meta platforms, but I feel it is positive that they are continuing to develop in the VR/AR area. The technology has been dreamed about since the 80s — having large companies investing billions into it will be good for everyone.

Regarding ignorance, some of the comments I hear around VR/AR remind me of early comments about the internet. Major publications and seemingly intelligent people were predicting that it would fail. Bill Gates didn’t see it until late. Even Bob Metcalfe said that in 1996 the internet would “catastrophically collapse”. It is difficult to question your own thinking, but the advantage is that you could avoid looking like a fool later.

Exactly, Facebook has 1.6 billion daily active users worldwide, Instagram might have a half billion daily users, WhatsApp has about 2 billion daily users, if Zuckerberg gets this right, look out.

It's very sleek and sexy but why would they use shiny materials for the triggers? Is it see through so the sensors can gauge finger proximity? It'll get filthy with prints fast. My favourite coaster is clear glass and while beautiful when clean, it quickly gets covered in prints.

$1500 for a personal data syphon. I imagine it'll scan your whole house to sell you crap and sell your whole life onto 3rd parties.

Wishful thinking here, but what if Apple have been seeding false prices? We're expecting what ... $2000 - $3000 for the Apple headset? This could be similar to how our expectations were that the iPad was going to introduce at $1000.

That way when Tim announces a $1750 AppleReality every VR enthusiast (all 12 of us) go wild.

From a post on Ars:

This is a $1500 headset in late 2022 that's going to have worse performance than a $300 headset from 2020.
If Apple’s headset is using recent hardware I expect it to cost 3000.

I yii yii. Zuckerberg introduces a mixed reality 'solution' to a problem nobody ever had, or needs either. The suckers are getting in line for it.

Why would anyone take seriously a series of pump and dump posts from someone who calls themself GordonGekko999? Gimme a goddam break! 🤣

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg today announced the launch of the Meta Quest Pro, a new $1500 mixed reality headset that's aimed at "making the metaverse a reality." The Meta Quest Pro has several features that are rumored for Apple's AR/VR headset, which we are expecting to see launch next year.

The mixed reality headset incorporates both augmented and virtual reality, and it is equipped with pancake lenses" that keep it sleek while offering high resolution. Apple too is said to be using pancake lenses for a thin and light design.

The Meta Quest Pro has a curved battery at the back for a more ergonomic fit, and it is using high-resolution outward-facing cameras to capture 4x as many pixels as the prior-generation Meta Quest 2. It is, however, using LCD displays, while Apple's headset is rumored to use micro OLED screens.

Apple's headset is said to have more than a dozen cameras for functions like eye tracking, spatial detection, expression detection, and skin detection, and Meta is beating Apple to some of these features. The Meta Quest Pro has 10 high-resolution sensors for eye tracking capabilities, plus Meta says that it is able to "capture natural facial expressions," translating them to a virtual avatar.

According to Meta, mixed reality will let you combine the physical world with the virtual, so you can do things like set up a virtual workspace while using your physical keyboard and mouse.

Other Meta Quest Pro features include a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ chip (Apple's headset will use its Apple silicon chips, possibly the M2 or M3), 12GB RAM, 256GB sto
I know I’m probably being unnecessarily cynical but I still don’t know what the purpose of a device like this is. And I don’t think Meta have quite figured it out either.

And I’m not limiting my cynicism to Meta either. The same applies equally to Apple. If, as rumoured, their AR/VR device comes with a price tag upward of $2500 then one would expect it to do some pretty special things but I haven’t yet heard a single compelling use case. Sure, you can have a video conference on it, but is that really so much better than doing the same thing in a widescreen monitor?

Meta’s product page for the Quest Pro is interesting as there is very, very little detail on how they intend the product to be used. There’s lot of nice pictures of beautiful people wearing their shiny new headset but there’s absolutely zero demonstration of what they’re seeing or doing. Meta lists supposed technology partners, with no information on what they’re bringing to the platform.

To be clear, AR and VR have their uses. Some of the games we play in future are going to be incredible. Beyond that, no-ones’s yet made a case that justifies the cost.
You’re not “cynical” —- most of the respondents here have little imagination. And the price point is too low for an enterprise level device. Zoom and MS-Teams will be integrated and more workflow apps and tools will follow. Those of you who just can’t “figure out the purpose” of these devices are irrelevant. If you’re educated and career driven you should be running as fast as you can to the Web 3.0 future. Don’t wait for Meta or Microsoft or Oracle or Google to take you by the hand and show you the light. There will be no “instruction” manual — I wish Darwin were here to see this!! It’s going to be amazing and brutal.! Bring it!!

Trust is a big issue here. Once it's lost it's hard to get back, and that's not just companies but with anything or anyone. HARD PASS

Edit:
The price point ($1500) means no one, outside of hardcore nerds, will be getting this
Battery life of 1-2 hours. 2 hours to recharge?
This thing is DOA
$1500 is a very low price. These are not gaming toys. the good news is those who take a “hard pass” will be irrelevant in the Web 3.0 era. May it be unmerciful. Darwin would love this thread!
