Take the cost out of it, it works great with the Apple ecosystem and has one of the best displays out there. And thats why I am going to buy one. Who needs a killer feature, what must have killer feature do any of these other headsets have? I can't think of a single one.
You can't ignore cost. That's like saying take the cost out of first class, it's much more comfortable than flying economy. But not everyone flies first class.

Even with, "it works great with the Apple ecosystem and has one of the best displays out there", that isn't enough to justify $3500. It simply is not and I need a much better reason before I consider this Apple Vision toy.

ā€œis a Nintendoā€ lol what? Try making an actual point.

In the demo today, Meta showed apps which are persistently in your physical space. They’re very clearly trying to copy the ā€œspatial computingā€ concept. What makes AVP that much different?

What can AVP do that MQ3 can’t? AVP just seems like a higher-end MQ3 that runs iOS

It’s basically iPadOS vs Android, but for your eyes.

ā€˜So what would you say about the Google Glass?

Is Apple trying to copy that spatial computing platform from over 10 years ago?

Apple started their venture into augmented reality computing just one year after Google glass went fully public.

Even though you diminish the AVP’s probable uses against the MQ3, Appold is clearly behind in the game.

The only thing stopping VR from being a huge success in the non gaming world is the quality of the visuals in my opinion. I've used VR over the years and whilst the quality of the visuals has improved over the years, the quality is still not there yet to get the majority of people interested in it. Once the visuals have improved to an actual 4k quality level and not something that is upscaled, two huge areas that VR could tap into is online shopping and property selling. The biggest draw back of online shopping is not being able to get a good look at the item you want to buy. Just think of the possibilities of being able to see the item you want to buy in high quality images that can be rotated in all directions. If the item is a home appliance/ home accessory, it could be adapted via AR so the person could see what the online purchase would look like in their home before they made the purchase. Property selling is another huge potential. The property is fully scanned inside and out then potential buyers can use VR to have a virtual walk through of the property and again with the help of VR potential buyers could add fixtures and fittings and other items into the property to see what it would look like decorated, all from the comfort of ones home, not having to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to see the property.

The Vision Pro has the potential to be huge but as with any VR headset, it must have superior visuals for it to be a success otherwise it will just end up like the other VR devices on the market, a gimmick that has limited potential.

You’d have to pay me to use a Meta product unless my life depended on it, but hardware wise this seems nifty.

The comparison between the new Quest and Vision is a bit weak, though, unless it’s a lot more of an AR device than it sounds like, rather than a VR headset with some AR bolted on.

Right now, it seems like Meta has a VR product that they’re trying to push into the AR space, while Apple is all-in on AR and spatial computing, with VR as an incidental at most.

Given Zuckerberg’s Metaverse focus the two platforms will probably compete directly eventually, but once the Vision headset is available they seem very far apart in market and use case.

$3500 is cheap for a spatial computer and its AR plus VR capabilities. I will be making as many 3D movies of my new grandchild as I can, beginning with an iPhone 15 Pro. Any device worth buying must be able to record and play 3D videos, or play spatial videos made using a phone camera. The device also needs stand alone apps that allow for typical computer work using large displays while sitting on an airplane. One must be able to navigate without controllers other than perhaps a Bluetooth keyboard for extended typing. Everyone is underestimating the demand for the Apple Vision Pro. They will sell as many as they can produce as fast as they can produce them. This Meta device is not in the same league.

I’d say the analogy is wrong. It’s not business vs economy, but flying on an airplane vs on a autogyro prototype. Of course, many people couldn’t afford taking an airplane on the early days, but no one took the autogyro, no matter how cheap it was.

They have too much money to dump into something nobody will use. Ever. We already have VR headsets and the problem is not the specs but the bulk and use cases - the new headsets improve all the specs but have the same bulk and with that limited use cases - if they're gonna do this super expensive thing they should invest in Neuralink and just bypass the optical sensors entirely, feed it straight to the brain.

I don't think thats a good idea either but at least it solves some of the problems with VR. Like wearing these huge bulky things covering your eyes, which really is only going to be a good idea in a dystopian future world like "Ready Player One" where people live in small pens and can't get out and are fed through tubes and get the VR to prevent them from going crazy. Not a future I aspire to, but hey each to their own.

I prefer forests, personally.

Meta has got to be the worst company name in history - Meta means ā€œdeadā€ in Hebrew (feminine adjective).

I wish Apple would spend their cash on researching and making those Tesla towers - then they can send electricity through the air and ground, and don't need cables anymore for any of their devices.

If they did that to make their headset work - it would advance humanity tremendously. Wireless electricity!

Edit: I remember rumors from long ago that Apple was researching wireless electricity. I mean, they do have it, kind of, just really short range. Increase the range... and .. wow!

Hopefully Apple will cut vision headset costs by leaving out pretty pointless EyeSight feature

Pretty easy if you follow the tech news. AVP is a true spatial computer while Quest 3 is a Nintendo that try to be a computer.
I think that's right. Apple is trying to position their VR headset as a new human computer interface, which competes with and is better than any - any - monitor setup.

I am wondering if it could for example simulate a 8 30" inch monitor setup for traders.

In my mind, they're thinking, this is like the best monitor ever, except better because while it can simulate you infinite monitor screens all at once, it can also do many other things monitors can't even do.

This is how they're justifying it to themselves, to the board, and in their corporate meetings. They're thinking they are inventing something totally new....

The only flaw in their plan is that nobody in their right mind wants to run around with massive bulky goggles - or even smaller goggles - or any kind of blindfold.

So these aspirational ideas are dead on arrival - it's not going to work no one will use this.

Their ad showing dad wearing these at their kid's birthday (!!!!!) is really all you need to see why this will never ever work. What dad wants to miss their kids birthday? What dad wants to be there, but not actually see their kid, and instead observe an image of the kid. Apple is failing hard at "human".

Yup - the whole thing is full of this flawed thinking - it's supposed to make the goggles less creepy but manages to make them more creepy - and it comes at a crazy amount of engineering effort / cost.

If I was an investor I would short the product.

Apple as a whole will be OK for some time to come, they take care of their money printing machine iPhone and can afford losing a few billion on the development of this rather useless thing.

That being said the tech they're inventing to make it work will probably be useful in many other ways, that tech will find its way into iPhone and other devices that are actually adding value to people's lives.

How can you say such a thing?

I would bet that for most people USD3,500 is not a trifling sum.

Especially as it will be a one person device. (Yes, I know you can set up profiles, but it is essentially just another Apple one person device.)

Lol.. I just rewatched the Apple keynote and watched the Meta keynote...and man the Quest 3 sure looks like the more interesting headset.

Shame the hardware isn't as good, but it's the presentation Apple should have done instead of floating iPads around the house.

Quest 3 looks like it will be a great update.

However I don't think it solves the problem that the number of active VR users is still pretty small. It's a little too pricey to be an impulse buy for people on the fence.

Although there is crossover between Quest and Apple Vision, they seem to be carving out fairly distinct market niches, with Quest going for gaming plus AR and Apple going for... business and prosumer use?

I think business be a hard sell for Apple, but it really depends on what developers step up to the plate. Meta has Microsoft developing for it. XBOX streaming games + office.

It's like how do you convince your boss buying this thing will make you more productive.

Tell a graphic designer/illustrator that the Amazon Fire Tablet and the iPad Pro have similar feature sets...you can read a book on one, illustrate a book on the other. Watch a movie on one, edit a movie on the other. Listen to an album on one, produce an album on the other. Not the same.

Quest is better compared to gaming VR because it is so highly targeted to gamers. I just went back and watched the intro video for the quest they showed when they announced the 3. They ONLY showed gaming. Sure, you can do other things on it. And yes, it has a forked, limited version of Android. But calling it a high-end android computer is a stretch. What are the quality of the cameras? What are the precision of the sensors? What's the quality of the passthrough video? A "high-end" android computer for $500? What high-end applications will you be able to use it for?

Meta is targeting gamers. Still. And they've built a device for that niche. Which is fine! Can someone do other, limited things with it? Of course people can try. But Apple is building a device for an entirely different category, and the quality is what will get it there.
You say Q3 is targeted at gamers because that’s what they showed at their presentation. But the AVP presentation mostly showed content consumption, and not creation, so why are you focused on content creation?
Can you illustrate a book on the Quest? NOT on Android. On the device itself. I'm sure you could try. You'll absolutely be able to do that on AVP

Sure...just like my daughter can finger paint on her Amazon Fire Tablet. But do serious work? If a professional illustrator had to choose between the quest and the AVP, it wouldn't even be a question.
Hand tracking is analogous to touch screen control, and VR motion controllers are analogous to a stylus / Apple Pencil, so if anything, the Quest is more suited towards professional illustration. And with the money you save by getting the less expensive headset, you could get a computer with several times as much GPU power as the AVP to plug the Q3 into to use professional apps. VR can use all the power it can get. If I want to sculpt in 3D, I want to do it with a 4090 GPU, not a base M2.
I hope I’m wrong and the AVP blows away the Q3 for content creation. I just haven’t seen Apple show evidence of that.

I would never let a Facebook device with mics and cameras enter my home, I rather live in a transparent home.

You people complain about privacy, the truth is most people just can't afford any.
In many countries, Facebook and Internet are synonyms because mobile providers bundle the cheapest connection with unlimited social network data. And iPhone cost the equivalent of your car in average-salaries.
Sadly, this may be a winning strategy after all...

Zuck taunting Apple. He'll be playing catchup what the M2 chip are capable in gaming. Even more so in spatial computing.

This battle is already over. Assuming Spatial Computing takes off, Apple will own this industry within 5 years.
Yeah, sure the cost is insane but within two years they'll have one at half the price. Then the SE edition will follow. It's Apple's playbook. They know how to do this stuff.

Be my guest giving your data to Mark. I wouldn't at any price.
You already are and don’t even know... BTW ā€œi wouldn’t AT ANY PRICEā€. You talk of your data like if you were a VIP, and giving your ā€œcommon mortal’s dataā€ it’s like sacrificing your entire family. Man, you would do far worse things for far lower price! Read less ********s on the internet and stop blathering šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø
