I'm confused by this:

Meta claims that the Quest 3 was redesigned from the inside out, and it features "4K+ Infinite Display resolution" thanks to two displays with a 2064x2208 resolution per eye and an "experimental" 120Hz refresh rate. Comparatively, Apple's headset uses 4K micro-OLED displays and provide a total of 23 million pixels.

By my calculation, the Quest 3 would have a total of 9,114,624 pixels with a "4K+ Infinite Dsplay", but the Vision Pro has 23,000,000 pixels with a 4K display? Am I doing the math wrong? The Vision Pro has 2 1/2 times more pixels? So what does the "4K+" actually refer to?

All this focus on "use case" as though there's a single thing the AVP will be used for. It's a computer. It's a general use computer. You all keep thinking in terms of the Oculas or the Quest as a device that is singularly used for one thing. This is the primary difference of the device. The AVP will be used for anything just as there is no "use case" for the MacBook or any other computer. The use case is only limited by imagination and software.

The cost differences have to do with fidelity of the experience. For example, working on a document with text requires a very high resolution such to render the text without looking pixelated. Additionally, the eye-tracking and gesture tracking that allow you to not NEED controllers. Go watch reviews from people who have actually used it and who have experience with multiple devices to get a sense of how different the experiences are.

I'm not going to criticize the Quest, because sure, it has its market. But even though they're both goggles, the AVP is the first true general computing AR/VR device. Nothing like it exists.
So what can I do with this general purpose computer? Apple doesn’t seem to know, but perhaps you do?

Depends on how you calculate.. Mostly marketing. Per eye resolution, or total, and what you can see at once vs what you can see spinning around.

Apple higher resolution, but the OLED plus HDR just as impactful.

Educate us closed minded simpletons. What exactly is the use case for a $3500 headset that has no controllers and requires an external battery pack?

And why is that use superior to what already exists? I’m struggling to imagine a family buying 5 of these to watch a virtual TV.

You're thinking "consumption", rather than "creation". The Vision platform takes AR/VR to a level beyond what existing devices can do by raising the bar on image quality, eye tracking and interaction.

  • Doctors will be able to use this for virtual surgeries with a level of precision not available on other platforms.
  • Travelers will be able to visit other places and worlds with such crystal clear clarity, they will feel like they are actually there.
  • Designers will be able to design with such precise control and infinite zoom in a 3-dimensional spatial space beyond what is currently available.
  • Scientists will be able to dive into the inner workings of a cell and walk around as if they were actually in it.
Can the above be done today with existing tech? Sure, but there are compromises. The Vision platform removes those compromises by bringing such advanced technology to your eyes and fingertips ... literally.

Spatial "computing" is where this is taking us. A TV is for consumption. A computer is for creation. The Vision Pro is a spatial computer.

Doctors sounds like VR unless you are giving this capabilities it likely does not have.

Travelers is VR

Designers is VR

Walking around a cell is VR

$500 UNIT VS $3500 UNIT. I'll take the $500 unit and deal with the differences.

It runs a snapdragon so Android Apps may be supported.

It'll have an added "feature."
The $500 META unit will censor your vision if you see any photos of the President's son and you'll only see someone highly qualified to run a global energy company.! HAHA! :D

And what is the "more" exactly?

Everything AR has been used for over the last 10+ years in medical (such as cardio-thoracic surgery), industrial (such as plant inspections and operations), and commercial (such as building/home walkthroughs with architects and clients) spaces and applications. There's many more applications. Just takes a wee bit of imagination.

Except at a much lower cost using Apple's Vision Pro and applications. Eh...google glass didn't make the cut in serious AR applications.

Is anyone still doubting Vision Pro won't be a smash hit ?

$3500 !!!!!

more than my 16" mbp max
more than an iphone pro max
more than the goddamn wheels for the mac pro!!!!!!!!!

AR will be huge when the tech is at a level to be used outside. Easy to find use cases there, where it can add additional layers to the world. See Vernor Vinge Rainbow’s End.

Much more limited use cases when you are in an interior environment already filled with gadgets that are very good at what they do.

Basically games and porn, neither of which Apple is targeting.

All the crimes and abuses that Facebook/Meta does in their 2D apps.

But now in 3D.

Including planet and environment destroying generative "AI" gobbling 100,000 the power of GPUs to generate fresh and original "stickers".

The open secret....tech executives don't use this crap themselves. They might wear one for a quick public stunt or claim they use it...but they hate the stuff and won't let their children use it.

Tech CEOs won't even let children use social media because they know how bad their platforms are.

It's the plebs and normies who have to suffer their products and scams.

Notice how the celebs promoting these new Meta products are the same celebs who stole millions of dollars from the public during the NFT craze.

They never stop shilling for criminals. These people are a gang and you are not invited to their party. Just give them your money. They laugh and laugh and laugh at you every day.

Good thoughts, would make more sense than what Apple put in the keynote, but not sure this is the device to do that.

Apple has literally spent more keynote time demonstrating VR creation tools on a 3rd-party VR headset than on their own.

Though, to be fair, that demo was quite contrived and clunky. But I was hoping Apple would show some kind of creative app for the AVP beyond standard apps in 2D floating windows.

I'd get the quest just for Titanic Honor and Glory and I don't even care for VR beyond that.

I see absolutely no reason to get Apple's Vision, it's a paperweight.

Virtual surgery?

LOL.

Surgeons already perform the highest level of precision possible. There is no 'higher level' from putting on a 3D helmet.

You mean we are going to have remote controlled drones all over the ****ing place? You think this is nice?

  • Designers will be able to design with such precise control and infinite zoom in a 3-dimensional spatial space beyond what is currently available.

They already have precise control and "infinite zoom" on a monitor. Sticking the monitor on their face does nothing.

  • Scientists will be able to dive into the inner workings of a cell and walk around as if they were actually in it.

They can already do that on a monitor. Sticking the monitor on their face does nothing.

If anything you say was true, gamers would have gone mad for VR already. It didn't happen.

If anything you say was true, CGI and 3D modellers would have gone mad for VR already. It didn't happen.

And you don't think they will? They had to get the device built and be able to get it into the hands and the minds of developers, in order to get those applications. I guarantee they'll showcase a bunch of stuff when the device is ready to ship.

It feels like there are people on these discussions who simply refuse to even try to imagine a different way to use a computer. And the AVP apparently isn't for them.

Look, Apple does give you cheaper version of the AVP. It's an iPad.
Generally for a new technology to replace an incumbent technology, it needs to be better and cheaper.

Will have to see what independent developers come up with, but Apples presentation was pretty uninspired. The use cases have to be very strong as it is simply uncomfortable to have one of these headsets on for hours at a time.

Remember all the 3D TV hype? You can't even get people to bother putting on a cheap pair of plastic glasses.

A social media company trying to do hardware/software that competes with Apple is absurd.

Quest is here, it is now.

It is $500.

It is version 3.

Quite honestly, it is Apple that is competing with the Meta with this product.

One product that shocked me in the past that seemed a simple enough venture for a multibillion dollar tech company like Apple was the Airpower charging mat. That was officially announced and then shuttered.

We'll see if Apple can actually come through on the Vision Pro seeing as they announced it almost a full year before it is slated to hit market.

Good thoughts, would make more sense than what Apple put in the keynote, but not sure this is the device to do that.

That's the big mystery for me. The potential is certainly there. And Apple has been collaborating with Stanford University's AR/VR laboratory for the last 7 years. Which tells me they're positioning their device beyond mere entertainment or just having a large screen experience for users.

I think a lot will depend on how strongly AVP is embraced by developers creating useful apps that solve real problems. The market potential is huge.
