Meta is eating Apple’s lunch. But fear not, come 2030 Apple will have an AR glasses device with a barely functioning Siri and it’ll be 3x the price. But it’s sure to be thinner and lighter. Rejoice!!!

Very interesting product. Would like to try it out. Not sure whether I will spend $799 on it. Also waiting to see Apple's version of these glasses.

When Google unleashed the equivalent of this in 2014 called Google Glass, their wearers were called Glassholes by people seeing them, and they were often met with hostility and even kicked out of bars and restaurants, as people didn’t appreciate being recorded and filmed without their consent.

I hope people will have the courage to do the same with the new Meta Glassholes wearers, and I cannot believe reading comments here cheering and getting excited about a product that will be filming and recording people unwillingly and without their consent and thinking that this is what Apple should do as well.

The fact that it’s at a different price level than yours doesn’t mean that it’s absurdly priced.
Going by your way of thinking, Porsche, Lamborghini, Audi are absurdly high too, because these are out of reach of most people.
The Meta Quest must be what you are looking for.
This is a nonsense. Did I say I was looking for a meta quest What makes you think I don’t have a Vision Pro? My points still stand.

It’s also a nonsense because they were pushing a new category. If that category doesn’t achieve mainstream levels of adoption, it’s DOA. You can always focus on luxury more premium models afterwards, but you need to sell the concept first, and that’s exactly the case of the floundering Vision Pro (don’t get me wrong, I think it’s technologically amazing) which has hasn’t sold in any significant numbers to such an extent that manufacturing has been paused.

Going today to buy iPods Pro 3 — for the live translation feature. When available here in Spain, I will buy these Meta Glasses, too, for the same feature. Already have the Meta glasses, mainly for the sound system and camera, which takes a wonderful POV foto. Video isn’t great, because one’s head moves too much, even when trying to keep it as still as possible.
Meanwhile, still waiting for, well, anything from Apple…tick tock, tick tock…

They had two massive failed demos of this crap live in front of a global audience. It was worse than any live failure from any company ever.

The only people who like this crap are the same type of people who thought Spotify is good for musicians when it turned out that Spotify was for the benefit of the military industry. If people still haven’t sussed out that Meta is a front of intelligence and military industry complex nothing can teach them.

I thought that if there’s one thing that everyone agrees on being unacceptable, it’s non-obvious cameras being shoved into people‘s faces in public. Apparently I overestimated people once again.

My wife would punch me if she saw me wearing these.

..and for good reason.
Well at least you'd then have a video recording of her punching you, so she'd be unable to claim she never physically assaulted you, and you are lying, to her friends :)

I’m curious, do people actually notice or get notified when those smart glasses are snapping a photo? The whole concept of a camera staring me down 24/7 without warning gives me serious privacy chills. Feels like we’re one step away from a Black Mirror episode where everyone’s a secret shutterbug.
Well I guess you can ask if you get notified by all the many security camera's you pass by every day of your life.

Meta this week unveiled $800 smart glasses that include an in-lens display. The new Meta Ray-Ban Display AI glasses allow you to check messages, view photos, and interact with Meta AI without the need to use a smartphone.

There is a full-color, high-resolution display included in the glasses, along with cameras, microphones, and speakers. Meta says that the included monocular display has a custom light engine and custom module that provides sharp contrast and high brightness. There are 42 pixels in each degree of the field of view.

Meta placed the display off to the side to prevent it from obstructing the view through the glasses, and the display is also not designed to be on constantly. It is meant for short interactions.

The AI glasses are meant to be used with the Meta Neural Band, a wristband that interprets signals created by muscle activity to navigate the features of the glasses. With the band, you can control the glasses with subtle hand movements, similar to how Apple Vision Pro control works.

Meta is offering the glasses in black and sand, and they are designed to look like Ray-Ban Wayfarers, but with a thicker temple arm. There two available sizes, including a standard size and a large size, and the band comes in three sizes. All versions of the glasses include Transition lenses, allowing them to be used both indoors and out.

Meta says the glasses have more rounded edges than the Wayfarers, along with a slight curve at the front to reduce glare and improve comfort. There are titanium hinges to minimize weight, and the glasses weigh in at 69 grams.

The AI glasses have a six hour battery life, but that can be extended to up to 30 hours with an included charging case. The Neural Band has an 18-hour battery life.

Meta says that Meta AI can show wearers answers and step-by-step how tos, with the glasses also able to handle text messaging and video calling. There are camera viewfinder and zoom features for taking photos, along with phone-free walking directions and options for listening to music. Live Captions are available for translating speech in other languages in real-time.

The Meta Ray-Ban Display is priced starting at $800, with the Meta Neural Band included. The glasses will be available starting on September 30. Meta is offering in-person demos for those who want to purchase the AI glasses.

... No.

Even if you are somehow able to put the Meta creep factor to one side, these things are a stylistic abomination.

That was over 10 years ago. The big difference now is that society's comfort level with being in the background of a video has completely changed. With everyone filming on their phones in public anyway, what's the difference? Nada

Yes I saw someone escorted away from the pool by police because he was using meta ray-bans.
Googled that, and what you are saying is not correct: the police didn't escort him away for using the glasses. They were called on a suspicion of recording in a private locker room. After finding no illegal activity had occurred, the private facility (YMCA) then enforced its own rules and asked him to leave.

He was wearing Meta Ray-Bans. A patron alleged he was using them to record children in the locker room. Police were called. They determined he had not broken any laws as he was not actively recording. However, the YMCA, as a private business, asked him to leave based on their policy and the concerns of other members.

But I get your point. It is difficult to know if they are recording or not. it needs to say "I am recording right now", and there will be backlash in certain circumstances.
