Betcha no Apple apologist defends Meta by telling people that it's their App Store Metaverse and if they don't like it they can use a different Metaverse or create their own; or that Apple Meta needs to be paid for the support and backend that's running the service; etc.
I was right.

4 pages in and I've not seen one single person defend Meta. But if this was about Apple, half the commenters would have already defended Apple like they always do.

Well... doesn't EPIC also have a "metaverse?" So, someone could definitely use a different metaverse in theory.

The thing is, the quest is a game console, the "metaverse" is a game, and if they ever end up porting the game to other devices those will take 30% of the 50% Meta collects.

The iPhone is a personal computer and most definitely not a game console.

But the App Store is actually a thing. God willing, the dystopian dreams Big Tech has for “metaverse(s)” never actually pan out.

Good luck finding developers willing to take that cut!
Oh, they’ll find developers willing to take it. If an app pulls in 1 million dollars in the first year (not impossible to believe as in the early days, people will be buying whatever new app they can find), the developer is still making $500,000. Even if the app only pulls in $300,000 that year, that’s STILL $150,000 to the developer. Not too shabby.

I hope all of you complaining about this also support unfettered application installation on iOS.

The internet was an open standard.
WAS, right up until corporations found they can make money on it. :) Metaverse is just skipping that part where it wasn’t profitable and going RIGHT to the profit. I mean, I’m sure I wouldn’t be reading macrumors right now if it wasn’t for the ad companies making it worth the owner’s time to keep running.

Is there anyone, anywhere that has any great love for Facebook anymore? Everyone I know is over it. If they have a FB account, it's sort of that thing they check once in a while but don't really think much about.

I mean, that’s 100% true though. :) If a developer doesn’t like it, go find something else to do. Most of the “Apple apologists” in the thread are actually saying that.

I believe the difference is that most folks feel if Meta can charge that and get people to take them up on it, GOOD for them! Folks who are addicted to and cannot do without Facebook will scream and cry that it’s not fair. Hm… I guess folks that are saying Apple’s 30% is not fair are addicted to and cannot do without Apple!

Not really. You've just ignored the difference in the two situations. As someone who thinks Apple's commission is reasonable, I think it is reasonable for Meta to charge a commission.

Is that a defense of Meta? No. It's still hypocritical. And it's stupid. The whole metaverse strategy is doomed to failure. It's the product equivalent of corporate buzzwords. They could charge 5% or 95% and the results will be the same.

I still use it with my existing FB friends list, groups, and occasionally the marketplace.

By definition that's true. So I guess I'm not an Apple apologist. Meta has the same right Apple has to take a commission. But that's where the hypocrisy is!! Meta tried to block Apple from doing this, and now wants to do it at a higher rate! But you know that, so the real question is: why are you trying to change the subject?

I think this is fair when putting up the cost for the foundation. It will scare many off the platform but it reduces competition for others committed to it and could still be very profitable unless the entire concept flops.

Imagine being the only developer selling a virtual cruise experience that becomes a huge hit and nobody else came up with that idea because of the 50% tax.

It takes a special kind of arrogance to treat your own developers like crap whilst pointing fingers at everyone else.
Do as we say not as we do mentality I guess. The problem is Facebook is so widely used by people who care more about posting what they've had for lunch than taking a moral stance....Oops there I go pointing fingers - sorry.

Ok, I'll play.

Let stupid Meta charge whatever commission they want inside the stupid "world" they are trying to build. I could care less. If they are charging too much, devs won't dev, simple as that.
