Looking back, it is "radio rock" today, you're right.......BUT, in metal lore, it is a legendary album and highly influenced many artists that followed it.

at the time, in metal circles, it was widely considered as a tragic departure from thrash metal to boring radio rock

I'm 50, I vividly remember the era and the reaction at the time. Some may have considered it that way, but I don't think it was "widely" considered that, at the time. This was at a time I was listening to Testament, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus, Megadeth, Sepultura, Overkill, very heavy stuff for the time, and I remember thinking that it was a tempo change from AJFA, but there were some bangers on there. Today, it is very difficult for me to listen to any songs off of it except for 'The Struggle Within".

interesting.

obviously a matter of different perspectives,

I'm 49 and while didn't listen exclusively to metal at the time was listening to stuff like bolt thrower, death, gorguts and immolation

Yes. I largely stopped listening to Metallica from black album and started again with st anger. Black load and reload are not great.

Finally got round to watching this, wow! I’ve never knowingly listened to any Metallica songs, but the experience was incredible.

Can’t wait for them to do more of this, and branch out into sports… football, boxing, this alone would be a justification for a lot of people to own an AVP.

Very excited to see what the future holds!
