That's what I would have expected as well at first. But on further consideration, there is likely a reason for the antenna to be around the bottom and it is called FCC: your brain would be grilled too much if the antenna was closer to the top. Already with the current design the iPhone 4 has a rather high SAR value as compared to for example the Nexus One.

Don't think so, as most antennas in the past were located exactly in the upper portion of the device...besides, the whole phone should ideally be used at a distance from your head, especially since the whole frame serves as antenna...

p.s.: my wife has just ordered an iPhone 4...if this is true, she will be royally pissed if she can't get the newest rev...

I really don't think it would be too big a deal if Apple coated the antenna. Yes, there would be some people who would be pissed, but you can't please everyone at the same time (even Apple can't seem to do that!).

Even with a fixed antenna, most people will still use a case anyway.

Yeah, I'm in the "not going to happen" camp. The press around Antennagate is already dead, not to mention tons of people are satisfied with their iPhone 4. If anything, Apple is going to just put extra coating on it and not make mention of it.

It would be a silent change if anything. No way in hell that they would piss off 5 million plus current owners by updating the hardware publicly.

+1

If anything, this will be a silent upgrade. I'd be surprised if there was even any kind of official announcement about it.

some of you guys must drink Evian...spell that backwards...if Apple does revise the hardware even slightly everyone will be entitled to exchange to get it...OR they would in fact invite Class Action law suits that would not get tossed...but on a more realistic note you should NOT believe any rumors out of Mexico unless they have to do with the price of Dope...

Omg come on!! This is NOTTTTT happening. Apple would have pulled the iP4 long ago if it ever considered a hardware change. There are no issues with iP4. I get much better reception than I did with 3GS.

You, sir, are a fool. Just because your iPhone 4 exhibits no problems doesn't mean that the millions of other iPhone 4s in circulation, including mine, don't exhibit the problem. The original iPhone's metal back was changed to plastic to facilitate 3G reception; a pretty big hardware change, I would say.

Seems much more likely that that Apple would of ramped up its Bumper production by the end of September and just include a black bumper with each phone...

How can this stay a silent update if it surely will imply that they don't give away a free bumper to your iPhone anymore? That would be the whole intention from Apples side to fix the antenna thing ...

Wasn't it obvious? Why would Apple set a deadline on the "iPhone case program" for September 30th if the problem would remain after that?

I predict that they'll add a coating to the antenna to reduce conductivity and replicate having a case on.

I've been holding off until September 30th to get an iPhone waiting to see Apple's next move.

Because it is not a problem! i tried over 30 phones all do that thing, maybe iPhone is one of the less afflicted!! Samsung Omnia 2 lose about all bars even 1-2 wifi bar! I have an iphone 4, i know other 3 people with it and we all don't have any issues, some times i don't even lose a bar is i death grip.

i have also much more better reception than my old 3GS which is used by my girlfriend now. I work in a shop and after about 200 iphone costumers i've talked about NO ONE have the problem! You just lose 1 bar, SOMETIMES is you tap the antenna in an innatural grip... AS EVERY OTHER PHONE in the planet do, even 3GS.

By "Apple haters" do you mean people who are dying to buy an iPhone that doesn't have proximity sensor issues, or a spot that when accidentally touched, could drop the call?

Nope, he means the people who claim they are dying to buy an iPhone while ripping on Apple. If anything is "fixed", they will still not buy one, finding some other fault. You know, because they hate Apple.

The press around Antennagate is already dead

Considering that we're in 8th page already few hours after the article was published the antennagate seems to be stll bubbling under ready to explode for slightest reason. I said after the media event that setting september deadline for the bumper deal was bad idea because it would only reignite the antennagate... And here we are, let the speculation begin, again. This won't be the last one of these rumors... Apple should put lid on this as soon as possible, though Jobs probably won't allow that since he's been in denial from the beginning.

there is no issue. i can't believe some of you are still clinging on to this overblown antennagate thing :p.

It's all the "When is the iPhone coming to Verizon" posters have left.

So, Apple decides to "fix" this issue (one I've never experienced), and they release it in Mexico??? Sure. Next rumor.

Are the numbers in the millions dude?

I'd have though that it may be more like thousands.....

I'm more interested in them addressing the proximity sensor issue. I don't think it will be fixable through software and it is a pretty big problem. It seems to be hit or miss with people experiencing it but I've had 2 iPhone 4s so far and both have had the problem.

Just use speaker phone.

Apple should fix it. I hear so many of my friends and family who already own iPhones don't want the new one because they "heard" the antenna doesn't work.

It might piss off some who already bought, but not fixing would be a bigger disservice to future customers.

yes, and some people don't step outside the house because a dragon might swoop down and eat them. Try playing with one - it's a non-issue. Even when the bars do drop in weak signal areas you can still make a call 9 times out of 10. Not buying because of media hype is exactly what certain people wanted to happen, which is why the spread this FUD.

Return rate on the phone is less that .5%. Fact, figures reported in a legal document. So say 6 million are sold, care to do the maths for unusable phones out there? Millions you say?

Here's some anecdotal evidence. 13 employees in the office, each with iPhone 4, none with problems - all report better signal when out and about. And no, not bought at the same time from the same supplier or even on the same network, two were even bought over in the US.

The original iPhones back was changed, yes. Doesn't mean revision one was 'broken'. The first automobile looks a lot different to today's model - was that somehow flawed as well? It's called evolution of design.

And you are what's known as an idiot.

I believe it. Remember when that guy asked Jobs what happens at Sep 30 deadline? "We'll Re-evaluate"

NO KIDDING! It is amazing to me that people can't read Jobs. I have been expecting this the moment he said "till September 30th". Well OBVIOUSLY they are going to do something if they are ending it then and it isn't going to be software so that leaves one option! How can people not see this?

I would agree because if it isn't silent they are going to have MILLIONS of IRATE customers! The news will get out though and people in the know will still be majorly pissed! I will be one of those people. There goes the resale value of my brand new iPhone 4!

Can we exchange our 'defective' iPhones for one of these then?

If this happens, which I'm convinced it will, I am going to be PISSED and I will demand a new phone!

So apple should change the phone because people are misinformed? My experience with the 4 is better than with my previous iPhone.
