As for the current design, apple COULD add a small change such as a coat or insulator to ease the pain but it CANT redesign without going through all the stages again and getting FCC approval.
Technically, adding a thin insulating coat to it would still be a hardware revision, though. A very, very minor one, but a revision nonetheless.

And since one of the fixes to the antenna non-issue is putting nail polish over the black strip, that's what I expect to happen.

It would obviously have to be a very minor change since a major redesign isn't made in months. Then again, perhaps the Zetas are forcing this guy to say this or else. For me? Not a true rumor.

All this coming from a failed State bordering another failing State with its huge consumer market for drugs? No, thanks...I call it BS.

This is something I predicted and posted when all this crap was happening. When Apple said that they would provide free bumpers til Sept 30 I felt that they would "make a correction" on the existing phone. That date wasn't so random. Why shouldn't they. I still fee the current 4 is great (even though I still have a 3GS) and they are always improving on them.

Some executives said the same thing at Telcel's press conference, only that slightly different, initially the Mexican iPhones were already fixed, then when pressed and questioned about it some more, the executive said that it would be the same phone that is available to everybody else.

Where are all the naysayers now?

Antenna dipped in some sort of coating is most likely the fix.

In my opinion the whole frame is gonna be rotated with the antenna going to the top of the phone, with a consequent rearranging of components inside...I predicted and suggested this a few months ago on the Apple Support forums...

it's interesting.. me and my wife both have iPhone 4 and my 2 other bros have iPhone 4 as well. We all haven't experienced any drop calls here in Vancouver for the last 1 month. This antenna thing is blown out of proportion in my opinion.

How could a news article saying Apple might be releasing an updated and fixed iPhone 4 be negative?
If this does happen I might finally be able to put down my hard earned money for one :).

I agree. My wife has a 3G and I have the 4. I haven't had one dropped call with my 4, but when I had my 3G I had them enough to be annoying. My wife still gets dropped calls, ALL THE TIME, while I've yet to have one in the same exact location, our house.

If you had crappy reception with AT&T prior and had tons of dropped calls, that issue will still persist with the 4 but you might get less dropped calls. The fact is, the reception IS improved with the 4. Death grip, signal bar drop, whatever..... my phone works fine, everyone I know in Tucson who has one has had no increase in dropped calls and some actually haven't had any at all. Nothing but positive feedback from Tucson as far as I'm concerned... the iPhone 4 is a fantastic phone imo.

I am on my 7th iPhone 4, I basically swap whenever the screen gets dirty and cite the proximity sensor issue.

IF there is a hardware revision I will be up to number 8.

Rock on Jobs

Your the reason they are in such short supply and have a 17 day waiting list on my network! Grrr

But if they make the change, what will the smug Apple-haters have to complain about?

By "Apple haters" do you mean people who are dying to buy an iPhone that doesn't have proximity sensor issues, or a spot that when accidentally touched, could drop the call?

I call BS. Apple Stores all have WiFi, so if you "were" browsing the net, you would not have hampered by holding the phone in any position you liked as it would not have relied on the cellular signal at all. Wanna try again?

Ummm, not all the Apple stores have wifi yet.

I hope there is a change in the hardware, if only to shut the smug Apple fanboys up.

I totally agree. Isn't it amazing how whenever Apple releases a defective product, fanboys are miraculously the only people to get defect-free ones?

iPhone 4 owners are a neurotic bunch!

Right, because wanting a phone that doesn't drop from five bars to "No Service" when I hold it is simply ludicrous.

Where the F is my white iPhone?

lol might as well not even bother producing a white iPhone 4, just make the iPhone 5 white only.

special thanks to the iPhone4 guinea pigs, I can now look forward to a better iPhone 4S :p

Actually - that's wrong. You have a window after purchasing a device (normally stated by the retailer) to return a product as faulty (or more specifically "not fit for purpose"), if after this time you return the product and it functions as at date of purchase, you have no case to claim. This is not the same as a product guarantee or a warranty, both of which refer to parts and functionality and would only entitle you to repair, replacement or possible refund/credit note if the damage wasn't caused by end-user action.

Otherwise, every consumer in Europe would trade in their "faulty/old" device for every new product revision free of charge ad infinitum.
That's absolutely not what that EU guideline is about. This specific guideline (199/44/EG) is about warranty when something breaks or does not work as advertised. What you're talking about is something completely different and has got more to do with e-commerce.

I was only referring to the EU guideline about warranty which simply states you as a buyer are entitled to a properly working product. Period. If something isn't working properly they have to repair it or replace it for free. There are numerous arrests about that. The warranty is only limited to a certain time which is 2 years. Not every EU member implements the 2 year warranty term. The Netherlands implemented it completely different. They state that the warranty is as long as the average age of the product. Which means that if the average age of the product is 10 years you've got warranty for 10 years. There are some more differences though, this is just one example. The only thing is, you have to prove the manufacturer is to blame instead of you.

So what does this all mean? Well, there are lots of video's on the internet about the antenna problem and even a lot of articles. Several consumer organisations also have some information about this and Apple even held a press conference addressing this issue. If they release a new revision that does not have the antenna problem this would show all those organisations, films and articles are correct. In other words, there is quite a lot of prove the iPhone 4 has a flawed antenna system. A flawed antenna system that is dropping the signal quite a lot means the device itself is flawed. This in turn means the device isn't working properly and thus the aforementioned EU guideline is in order. They have to repair or replace it for free in that case (which most likely will come down to replacing the device). People will have to turn to whoever sold them the device which will be the telephone companies like T-Mobile and Vodafone. They'll probably sue Apple for all this.

As you can tell from above all hell will break loose if Apple will release a newer updated iPhone 4 version with a fixed antenna (provided it is the antenna that is causing the problems, not some sensitivity setting, buggy umts chip, buggy umts firmware or something completely different). Don't count on a new iPhone.

Btw, Europe is how the continent is called and is something completely different from what the EU is. The EU stands for European Union and is comprised of several European countries but certainly not all of them. Turkey is on of the European countries which isn't part of the EU (it has applied for membership but it needs to meet the requirements which they are somewhat reluctent to do).

That's what I would have expected as well at first. But on further consideration, there is likely a reason for the antenna to be around the bottom and it is called FCC: your brain would be grilled too much if the antenna was closer to the top. Already with the current design the iPhone 4 has a rather high SAR value as compared to for example the Nexus One.
