You guys really don't get how this stuff works. There won't be a redesigned iPhone 4, I can almost guarantee that. Remember when before the release of the iPhone 4, there were rumors that because the redesign was so significant, Steve jobs had prepared a less modified version, closer to the iPhone 3GS, in case of a problem? Do you guys remember these rumors, well it's clear they were true because APPLE knew that this design has issue but jobs continued to push it out.

Anyways regarding a redesign of the iPhone 4, you guys forget that phones need to go through several stages before being mass produced. Assuming apple even knew about this 2 month before the launch of the iPhone 4, the earliest they can release a revision would be end of this year, early next year. Look at the version hone rumor, they are still in the second last stage of release, that would mean that it would have a revised antenna design.

As for the current design, apple COULD add a small change such as a coat or insulator to ease the pain but it CANT redesign without going through all the stages again and getting FCC approval. Even the coating/insulation would need to be FCC approved most likely. Don't expect a redesign maybe a slight tweak for the current design, if the verizon version gets a redesign is also just rumors.

Phones go through years of testing and approval, when they released the iPhone 3GS they were already in the initial steps of iPhone 4. When they released the iPhone 4, they were preparing a iPhone 5 and maybe a modified verizon version. Soon somewhere between iPhone 4 launch and preparing of iPhone 5, they will start looking into iPhone 6. What I'm trying to say Is that iPhone 4 has NOT been started AFTER iPhone 4 but maybe a year BEFORE it if not more and so on.

Thanks
AE

Does anyone think this will hurt the resale value of the older ip4's if they release a new version with better reception. Once some distinguishes between them on eBay the price will fall on the older versions.

Returning an iPhone

u make it sound so simple. ive tried to "return" it to get a replacement and all they said was "hmmm maybe use it for a bit longer and see if the error remains" ... "hmmm its a known issue and u can use a bumper" ... "hmmm a replacement won't help cuz all iPhones have this issue in certain areas" (after that bi'''' said theres no issue o_O)

CORRECTION: You haven't actually tried to "return it"...you have tried to trade it in for another iPhone4 that works the same as your current one. If you don't like the way the phone operates, just say "I would like to return this and get a refund..." If you have a problem doing this, spend a few hours in front of a mirror practising it and I'm sure you will be able to handle it when you try it for real!

I'm scared of the Apple Store!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wanted someone to bring this up as well. After reading the guy that returned his iPhone 7 times, which he made it sound like it was so easy, I was wondering if I could return mine. I have the antenna issue and the proximity sensor issue and I feel if I were to go to the Apple store, they would just say something to push me out the door without really helping me.

This comment reminds me of this:

Are the Apple Store people so scary to deal with????

Does this antenna issue really effect people? My family has three iphone 4s which are all in weak service areas, in fact we have no service at our house and we only get edge, no 3G in town.

Yet, none of us drop calls nor are we plagued with with signal loss issues when the thumb is placed over the antenna connection.

We received our free cases in the mail but I don't use them as I don't have a problem.

Seems to me that it is a non-issue.

Apple should fix it. I hear so many of people who already own iPhones don't want the new one because they "heard" the antenna doesn't work.

It might piss off some who already bought, but not fixing would be a bigger disservice to future customers.

:(:(:(:(
My heart goes out to the poor people who bought the defective RevA iPhone4.

Stuck on a 2 yr contract with a defective phone, can't even switch to Sprint or Verizon in January.

Fail.

If Apple modifies the iPhone 4 as stated in this article, then wouldn't doing so be an admission that there is a hardware defect with the current iPhone 4's? Further, what does Apple intend on stating with regards to current iPhone 4 owners if/when this happens? Or perhaps Apple will not make such a statement and will quietly roll our modified versions, as the average Joe couldn't notice the difference externally.

I originally had problems with dropped calls and loss of signal when I was at work (where the reception is poor).

I've had no issues there since I've been using the free bumper.

Bs?

There are issues with the antenna. Last week I went to the Apple Store in central London, held the phone with my left hand while browsing the web in a perfectly normal position. In less than a minute there was only one bar and browsing was nearly impossible. I tried this with 3 different iPhones 4 and in both T-Mobile and Orange. They all had the same problem.

I call BS. Apple Stores all have WiFi, so if you "were" browsing the net, you would not have hampered by holding the phone in any position you liked as it would not have relied on the cellular signal at all. Wanna try again?

Exactly. They would have a pr nightmare.

It wouldn't be one if they allowed current iPhone owners with the problem to exchange theirs. It would have been a PR nightmare if in July they announced a new design was coming out months later.

It comes down to this....

if apple were to revise the iphone 4, they owe nothing to their loyal apple fanbois.

however, it would be in their best interests to make some sort of peace offering, even though the most loyal fanbois will defend jobs like anything he does is perfect.

I on the other hand am waiting for the white cdma iphone 4.1 with the fixed antennae and proximity sensor :D

Won't happen...a HW revision 3 months after release? C'mon...It won't happen...
Plus there is absolutely no source...pure speculation from that exec wishing customers will buy more with such unfounded statement.

I have no idea of the inner workings of the FCC, do you? I have no idea how long it takes to have a product go through approval or if one could just submit an addendum/revision to the previous application. It's not ike they are starting from scratch with this process, like you make it seem. Who knows, they could have already submitted this revision and nobody knows about it.

Phones go through years of testing and approval...

Well, apparently this one didn't.

Sorry, I just liked this line the best.
