So where does Adobe go?

Adobe is going to enter the world of real time 3d engines for the web and mobile. They will announce something to do with 3d this month. My initial gut feeling is that it will suck, and suck badly, and still be at least a year away.

If I set my expectations low, then I can be pleasantly surprised if it is awesome. Unity3d casts quite a shadow for good reason, though. WebGL sucks balls and no browser supports it, while the Unity folk are a truly cross platform company adopting all the technologies necessary (beast, umbra) to be a player in the market.

The Video codec play that Flash had going is effectively dead thanks to the big push off the cliff from Apple and the adoption rates of H.264 and other open-ish technologies.

Flash plays h264 video just fine. Chances are if you've looked at youtube or hulu, you've seen it in action.

Try using PS or AI on a windows platform, it's not pleasant.

And yet it's still better than the mac versions. :(

Next thing your telling me...

Next thing you will tell me is that they will buy Quark

This whole thread, if the Govt would let it happen, would be bad.

Designers don't want to have to get geeky, they want and need software and hardware that gets on with the job and doesn't blow up in their face at 3am when your deadline is 6am.....

Adobe does produce the best software for designers, but it's not hard to see a replacement taking my money in the not to distant future.

You assume that Apple or someone else will offer a replacement for this? Do not forget that Adobe did not create great design apps over night nor will any new player on the scene to come. If it were that simple to accomplish, Apple would have done better than their iWork and iLife crap.

Please do not introduce facts (H264 in Flash) in to the argument, you will only confuse the fanbois.

Microsoft will take the easier software development for profit avenue rather than the cut-throat lawsuit-inviting government-disgruntling alternative.

An anti-trust law suite for non-compete decision. Wow, this is going to be big ... if it ever makes it to the court...

Look everyone can hate on Adobe as much as they want but some of us rely on their "crappy software" to make a living. I don't want anything making the Creative Suite any more cumbersome/bloated/buggy plus, it would be a very stupid move, losing Mac support thus forcing tens of thousands of professionals over to Windows.

This is just bad on every level from a creative professionals point of view.

I don't think Apple should buy Adobe, just enough to block a merger or bigger buy out.

Flash is dead dude, get over it. The Blackberry Playbook has no apps...the Ipad has over 8 million sold and over 30,000 apps that are Ipad specific.

The Ipad 2 will blow any other tablet out of the water.

The Playbook does not even have 3G! Its wifi only. And nobody knows what the price it yet.

Apple could drop the price of the Ipad 2 to less than $400...and nobody would be able to compete.

Thanks for your post as it pretty much sums up why I'm fed up with macrumors lately. So go ahead...enjoy you funny locked gadgets.

But don't blame anyone that is seriously considering Windows 7 in capable and upgradable machines with a hell of a software library to get their actual computing needs done - THE WAY THEY LIKE IT, AND NOT THE WAY APPLE LIKES IT.

Geeez...you people still don't get it. And even if it was a pure Flash-centric meeting...can you imagine the pressure on Apple when HTC shows off what they have up their sleeves with Windows Mobile 7 and a streamlined, fully functional Flash client built in?

I myself could care less whether the iPads of this world or the slates will succeed. They are not needed for me. I'm old-school. I want my desktop powerhouse on the desk, that does WHAT I WANT...I want my sturdy lappy on the road...go figure.

And currently if there's anything that's getting Apple to move their lazy backs from the laurels they rest on - I applaud it wholeheartedly. Even if it would be that merger...

Office 2011 is really nice, maybe Microsoft could fix flash on mac, because apparently Adobe can't do it on its own.

Did not you forget about HTML5? I though the prevailing opinion on this forum was that HTML5 is winning (if not already won the battle for video playback.

I think HTML5 is great but clearly many of the big name purveyors of copyrighted content do not. Namely Netflix and Hulu. They use proprietary software for tracking and security purposes which, if my understanding is correct, is something missing in HTML5's capability.

Given the marketshare of both Flash and Silverlight, I think it would be a major hurdle to overcome in a merger approval.

Apple and Adobe seem to have forgotten about the design industry, the industry that has kept them alive for years. Now they think they don't need us.

That would be a disaster for both companies.

If that's right how come they can deliver it in their iOS apps? Something doesn't add up.

I'd love it

First - Microsoft has the largest Mac dev team around (although it could be argued that this might not be wholly necessary). And I'd hope they'd bitch slap Adobe's prices. Adobe seems to continually price themselves into doing whatever they can to not move product. Microsoft sells product - period.

I'm down with that.

In my world, faster software means more productivity.

If you take a Ferrari and run it on poorly maintained streets, with speed bumps and congestion, it wont matter how fast it is, it's still going to be slower than the guy on the trials bike.

If this is the case the Microsoft smartphone might tempt me over.

Two great companies partnering up to fill the many gaps Apple have left in their iPhone.

I'll be keeping my eye on this.

It's a fear that started to creep up as soon as Apple got into a pissing match with Adobe over the Carbon/Cocca change over and then intensified with the Flash debate in recent months.

I still think it's a long shot of Adobe abandoning Apple, in the same vein of me winning a 10k marathon, but whenever rumors like this start flying I have to fight the urge to reach for my tinfoil cap. ;)

amen......now where's my bunker kit....

You can always tell when an apple fan is backed into a corner when they bust out the car analogies. It's no insult to Apple or you that the Adobe suite is faster on windows. It's Adobe's doing.

+1. Please don't let this happen, please don't let this happen, please, please, please!

I agree, this coming from a Windows user. Microsoft will ruin Photoshop and InDesign. At least Apple will make those products look better.
