You can always tell when an apple fan is backed into a corner when they bust out the car analogies.

Just trying to keep it simple for you....:D

However, it's 20 years of real experience that tell me it just doesn't make sense trying to run a design agency or a print house on pcs.

It's no mistake that the vast majority of the graphic design industry run on makes, we need reliability and productivity. This is not always measured in pure speed.

Sometimes you need to look at how often machines crash (and yes macs crash too) how often do you need to get IT help (I never have needed it) how easy is the software to use (to me it is perceptively easier on the Mac, even though they should be the same they are not)

Obviously some of this is personal opinion, some is not.

Everything in the computer industry doesn't necessarily happen because of Apple. I think this story is rubbish, and I don't think that two of the most prominent software companies are basing their futures on what Apple does alone.

Apple is pretty much a consumer driven company these days. You only have to look at the neglect of their so-called 'Pro' line, which is over-priced and underspec'd. Not to mention the ghost town that is their 'Pro Apps' division. Shake anyone?? The multiprocessor unaware FCS??

I've worked in print and now in broadcast and I can tell you that contrary to popular belief here, Microsoft and Adobe products provide productive and cost-effective workflows which drive those industries. So I think they're far from dead because Apple made a phone or a tablet computer.

Adobe is going to enter the world of real time 3d engines for the web and mobile. They will announce something to do with 3d this month. My initial gut feeling is that it will suck, and suck badly, and still be at least a year away.

If I set my expectations low, then I can be pleasantly surprised if it is awesome. Unity3d casts quite a shadow for good reason, though. WebGL sucks balls and no browser supports it, while the Unity folk are a truly cross platform company adopting all the technologies necessary (beast, umbra) to be a player in the market.

Flash plays h264 video just fine. Chances are if you've looked at youtube or hulu, you've seen it in action.

And yet it's still better than the mac versions. :(

WebGL is turned on by default in Chrome unstable, Firefox 4 and soon WebKit Nightly will turn it back on, along with other WebKit browsers like Epiphany.

Opera 10.7 will have it built-in, as well.

You'd be a fool to bet against WebGL as it will be the defacto for embedded systems leveraging OpenGL ES 2.0.

Based on your years of past experience, I can see why you would have that opinion. It's only recently - very recently - with Windows 7, IMO, has Windows became a viable alternative for working in design/animation/etc.

I had that same opinion not too long ago. Hell, on these boards I used to describe the horrors one would face using windows. I'm singing a different tune now, though. ;)

I've spent too much time looking into Web GL. Unity is the better platform right now and it works all over the place and in mobile markets. Until WebGL matures to that level I can't waste any more time on it.

I got a great name for the new company: Microbe.

"Darn it, I got another virus again. Darn you Microbe!"

How often does Microsoft leave that much money on the table just out of spite, though?

True.. Pre-2000 microsoft would do a lot out of spite - but these days - not very much. They'd find themselves a new law suite in a matter of seconds.

When a company is earning multitudes of what you are while their market share is still growing, while simultaneously Linux companies are stealing your lunch (RedHat, VMWare). You would be stooooopid not to do something.

It won't matter much. Google will be the MS of the mobile age. Apple will eventually share the same market share of the mobile that they currently share of the personal computer.

Microsoft is just odd, I have no clue what their future holds. They are struggling to find an identity and that's not good for them.

Maybe one day I'll change my tune, but I suspect it wont be for windows, it just has no class.

Personally I think the open source offerings are going to come of age in the next few years, we'll see.

Other than their clunkines inkscape and gimp are very good pieces of software, they just need a better GUI.

"But don't blame anyone that is seriously considering Windows 7 in capable and upgradable machines with a hell of a software library to get their actual computing needs done - THE WAY THEY LIKE IT, AND NOT THE WAY APPLE LIKES IT."

"'m old-school. I want my desktop powerhouse on the desk, that does WHAT I WANT...I want my sturdy lappy on the road...go figure."

Then how come you use that POS word processor MS makes for droids? Talk about something that forces you to do thing the way they think you want to do it, rather than letting you control precisely what you wan it to do. That would be Corel WordPerfect. Yeah laugh ms fanboi but the ability to control WHAT YOU WANT was so important you wouldn't use ASSUMED CONTROL MS Word.

Most people would prefer to see Apple buying Adobe instead. But in that case, would Aperture kill Photoshop, Final Cut kill Premiere or Motion kill After Effects?

Ha ha... HA HA HA!

If you're going to see Photoshop on any Linux platform its most likely that Adobe will choose to use a Novell(Soon to be VMWare) or RedHat development base. I'd bet good money on it too.

As an actual audio engineer that makes a living from the trade, Logic is far from #1.

Pro Tools is the industry standard. Open up a phone book, or go online and call any studio you can find. I guarantee you none that are of professional grade will be running Logic.

That being said I rather like Logic :)

Ah, actually that's quite wrong. A.J. Rahman, the guy who won an oscar on best score/song works with Logic.

Hans Zimmer uses Logic + Cubase and many other stuff.

So don't even bother. If you are doing digital composition, Logic is best. Maybe we are talking about different types of studio work though. Protools is usually the standard for editing.

Nevertheless, Logic is a kick ass DAW and many pros use it, so back to original topic, Apple's pro apps don't really suck.

No, quite the contrary. None of those apps from Apple holds a candle to their opposites.
