This really does look interesting. I like the metro interface a lot so I would love to try this. Just needs to have the right price. One of the main things I love about it is that it has good support for handwriting. Makes annotating fun :)

What if this tablet comes with Halo 4? And if it can play XBOX 360 games? It has a big chance as a gaming device.

That's NOT going to happen, lol. I think it already RROD's the xbox360's when playing games that's aren't even that intensive on the CPU/GPU. I have gone thru 1 xbox 360 and traded in it for cash to get a kinect xbox. The kinect is cool for about 1 day. Then it sits there collecting dust because it's not 1:1 and there is noticeable lag that I don't like compared to the PSMove. But both don't have games that are good enough to use it.

NOTHING even comes close to the handwriting in kanji on iOS. It's truly remarkable how apple can create something so intuitive for asian language writing.

The best part of this news is the use of a non-x8sucks cpu. Other than that it's a lack luster OS with a clean paint job. Shame, Apple won't give us something like this. True there is the iPad, but that is not running full OSX, which I love more than iOS.

I think the RRoD is just from unreliable hardware, not weak hardware. Maybe Halo 4 would not work, but Halo 3 is an old game at this point. Or they could make portable versions. I think MS game fans will buy anything named "Halo" anyway, and I don't blame them for being Halo fans if they like Halo a lot. I think it's a pretty good game, way better than Call of Duty anything.

Now if Nintendo pairs with Apple, I will be very happy. Super Smash Bros Meleeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D

I love Mac OS (better name than OSX, anyone?), but I would not want it on my iPad (if I, in theory, had an iPad). Also, if I had an iPad, I'd have the option of using my iMac via VNC.

Runs Office, interfaces *correctly* with Exchange... Enterprises will love this thing

No more "oops, keynote changed the formatting"

And calendaring will work like it's supposed instead of being treated to 2nd class citizens like the whole iOS world has to integrate now (delegate handling is atrocious)...

CxO's everywhere are already hearing about cost of operation of two end-user platforms, Apple versus Microsoft... Not enterprise secure versus uh... "experienced"...

In the end, competition will be good for us, but Apple may not understand how to compete when it has 95% market share, where as MSFT does, and even knows the mistakes it made when it did...

There's just SO MUCH that MSFT can tie an information appliance such as a tablet to, all the backend plumbing, databases, SharePoint, Azure that the iOS world doesn't "get"...

Even if these devices were inferior in terms of hardware, the total value proposition from a CxO point of view is actually really good. iPads encroached onto the enterprise market because end users demanded access from their own devices. There was no "sanctioned" alternative, now that there is, is Joe Normal still going to go buy an iPad if work supplies him a Surface??? Dunno...

The big question is, will the Surface be as disruptive to the iPad market as say, the iPhone was to RIM?

NEVER underestimate the MSFT guys - they're a lot more talented than most think or know, and... They've definitely learned from "think different".

Design looks at least unique and bespoke. However, isn't there a huge problem with this sort of design where you'd need a raiser to even use it comfortably on a desk? Especially when we're all told in computer H&S to have a screen facing you at face height etc. You'd be look down on the thing all the time and give yourself a nice crooked neck. That's my impression of the intentions of this device.

Again, I can't stand companies announcing something and then not releasing it within 3 to 4 weeks :(.

The keyboard, track pad, USB and pen input are what really drives the differentiation
Differentiation from what? The Android tablets that have USB and pen input, like the Thinkpad, or the current Wind'ohs tablets like the Thinkpad X series, or HP Slate? It's more the same garbage from MS, except this time they wised up a bit and are offering a proper cpu, with the Tegra 3 and ARM architecture.

Don't think this is vaporware but it may take some time to come to market as for bloatware now that I do believe will be the end result.

I mean "vaporware" in this sense "The term also generally applies to a product that is announced months or years before its release, and for which public development details are lacking. (Wikipedia)".

I'm not saying that the product won't be released some day, but the timing of this very vague announcement makes me highly suspect that it's just the usual ploy to boost the MSFT stock.

Well, we can't include Ballmer in this. Seriously, that guy is nuts. I think he was exposed to enough gamma radiation to make him a partial Hulk, but it also messed some things up in the head...

Yes apple does let people play with the devices months before they are released, thank god else we would have endless of thread that speculate what will be released.

It never amazes me how people can just write something down without thinking .

What?

I said apple DO let people play with their newly announced products... Like after WWDC or something. Here, microsoft just had a similar conference and they are restricting the distance from their newly announced product and the media or whoever.

Am I the only one who isn't jumping all over the tablet craze?

I've been waiting for a tablet at LEAST since Star Trek: The Next Generation... 25 years ago.... so

...not a craze. A fulfillment.

Back to the tablet at hand, this will be some solid competition to the iPad. Hopefully we'll get a micro SD in a future iPad, and a more real OS.

Still, can't beat the 3rd gen iPad. I use it in portrait mode probably 90% of the time, which Windows 8 fails in.

Apple never really officially announces anything until right before release. If you count their leaks, which might be intentional, they are also guilty of vaporware-ing. There's nothing wrong with it.

The key selling feature of this tablet and those coming from it's competitors is that it runs Windows. Not Android. Not iOS. Windows. There is a large market for that.

I've been waiting for a Communicator since Star Trek (original series), and sadly, nobody is going to do this. The closest is a lame-o walkie talkie :(
