This will not work, microsoft still don't get that the hardware is almost immaterial to ecosystem, no one needs a keyboard on a tablet, no one needs a trackpad especially on a tablet no one needs usb ports or any of that stuff they seem to have tacked on.

I bet it'll ship with no proper media store or a very poorly stocked one, no books, no podcasts, no proper video store or rentals and poor to non existent syncing and almost certainly poor cloud integration, I bet it won't even work properly with their windows 8 phones. You can guarantee there is no real master at the helm of this bumbling project. Metro is ugly out of date and just plain pants.

I'm not saying that they can't do it right but microsoft isn't structured the right way as a company to function at a level apple does.

They've already made massive mistakes IMHO with design and hardware features before i've even seen the screen.

VS iOS which has remained the same game for some 5 years now?

Clearly you've never seen Metro in action, outdated my @ss.

It looks a lot thicker in side view .. More like a normal laptop. Personally dont like the metro UI .. iOS is still the worlds best mobile OS.

I'm probably way off but looking at the keyboard it looks about like it will be about as comfortable to use as this.....

Oh the horror.

Well done MS though. May be a bit too late but good effort none the less.

Microsoft today unveiled a major tablet initiative to compete with Apple's iPad, Google's Android, and its own PC hardware partners.

The Microsoft Surface is a 10.6" tablet powered by Windows 8, coming in two distinct versions -- both equipped with touch screens. One will be powered by an ARM processor and will be more like a traditional tablet running Windows RT. The other will be powered by Intel's 22nm Ivy Bridge chips running the desktop version of Windows 8.

As reported by The Verge:
YouTube: video
In addition to the tablet itself, Microsoft will sell two Smart Cover-like devices that attach magnetically to the Surface. Unlike Apple's add-on, which serves only as screen protection and as a stand, Microsoft's Touch Cover and Type Cover turn into a full-sized keyboard complete with a built-in trackpad. Microsoft says using the Touch Cover is "twice as efficient as typing on glass", a clear shot at the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

Microsoft did not share any information on pricing or availability, saying both the ARM and Intel editions would be price competitive with like products.

I must say, it is beautiful. Looks like a beautiful product.

Credit given where due, well done Microsoft.

Now let's see, price, battery life, and reviews!

A bloody Trackpad for a tablet!!:mad: - Seriously, so you telling me i gonna see a mouse pointer:confused: on my tablet, right Microsoft?

but Seriously a Trackpad LMAO

Lost my keyboard

I think it's very inconvenient to have the keyboard separated, it makes it more likely to situations where you've 'lost' your key-board and then what? Is the 'Pad' computer not all about having your light-weight-personal-semi-laptop at hand, being able to just press one button to work with it?

How does it work when sitting in the train, crowded with people, when you like to write an e-mail? How to unfold your keyboard, but even more interesting, on what?

Microsoft said that the keyboard is as twice as convenient when compared to typing on the screen? How is this measured? Is this a scientific fact or just an opinion, one in the eye of the beholder?

I'm not an Apple fanboy, by all means, I think the iPad has flaws on itself as well, but when I think of a 'Pad' machinery, I like to think about one device, with no pencils, not separate keyboard, and enough horsepower that let me keep all the external devices like hard drives with USB3 conniption home. This saves me weight, inconvenient situations and more important it serves the purpose of a convenient device of which the 'pad' computer should be all about i.m.h.o.

How much typing have you done on the Surface keyboard?

You buy it and tell us how great it is.

Stands suck for lap typing. Even worse with an unsupported keyboard.

Been there, not going back.

Also, look how space there is between the screen and keyboard. No wonder it has a trackpad.

You realize you don't have to use the keyboard right? And that there are some people that would? Why do you think there are BT keyboards available for the iPad? Because no one wants them?

Pretty sure the majority of users (98%) can type on a keyboard faster than using a inferior touch screen keyboard. The keyboard doesn't have to be used either.

I have the blue tooth keyboard and it makes the iPad so much more usable than just depending on a touch screen keyboard.

As long as it plays JetPac and Knight Lore... I'm in!

Well, never thought I'd say this, but I'm so impressed I'm going to buy one right away.

Oh wait, I'm still not saying that.

I don't know whether to applaud Microsoft for trying, or whether to figure their shareholders must be pissed that they're pumping so much money into what is surely NOT going to be a winner.

Not there yet. But getting close.

The only thing missing is really in the design, if you look at it from the side, it's really ugly PC-like, and not a clean slick tablet.

As for metro, UI/UX and ecosystem: not there yet either, but getting close also.

Go Microsoft! Without competition Apple has litterally been spitting in the face of its customer with the lame update, lack or real relevant innovation and now unjustified higher prices.

A cover that doubles as a keyboard? Loving that idea.

What I don't like is that Microsoft are trying to make a Laptop PC - with kickstand, keyboard, standard laptop CPU, fans 'n'all.

A tablet is not supposed to be a laptop PC. A tablet is supposed to be a tablet. And used as such.

Which is why there is the Windows RT version with an ARM processor (Tegra 3 reportedly), all accessories you see in the video are optional it can still be used as a stand alone tablet.

It really doesn't even matter if its successful or not, it will bring influence to Apple to improve their products. I mean the Zune wasn't ever really a threat but somehow it got Apple to update to 16GB capacity with the 4th gen nano.

Likewise, I hope this tablet at least gets Apple's gears moving instead of stagnating ideas because they are so far ahead of the competition (look at the iPod line for a example of what happens when Apple no longer faces competition).

The USB port makes this more useful than an iPad already.

watching videos on the iPad with no stand is a PITA.

Maybe they have a chance

They want iPads not a tablet!
Seems this device will appeal to mostly PC buyers. This may have a neutral effect and just cut into their own Laptop market.

Anyway nice device, the competition is welcome!

Actually, most computer operators still hunt n' peck. The most rapid way to become fluent in typing is to take what we used to call OJT [On the Job Training] courses in High school, back when IBM Selectric Typewriters with whiteout for learning Office work. I got up to 80 wpm back in '85. I thought that was impressive until I saw a woman around 120-140 wpm working at IBM look like a blur on the keys.

I was laughed at by my friends for taking the class. Flash forward and they are no longer laughing. Besides, all the girls were taking the class. Win/Win.
