Every time Microsoft PR opens their mouths... they sound worse and worse. They really need to stop doing this... it just makes them look bad. They REALLY need to come up with better marketing tactics... because this crap is NOT it. This is the same company led by a CEO that laughed at the idea of an iPhone and said it would fail... and now they're desperately trying to play catch up in various markets that Apple has dominated. Google is doing far better than Microsoft in the phone/tablet market... so MS can take notes from both Apple and Google. Clearly MS are doing something wrong. I don't want Microsoft to go away... competition breeds better products... but they really need to get their heads out of their asses. It's not funny anymore... it's just pathetic.

If at first you don't succeed, blame it on theother guys...

Is it just me, or is Microsoft so deeply lost in their own crap they have no chance of ever seeing the "surface" again? Dear lord, i haven't seen any contests here in my country where you might win a crappy surface. Everyone offers android tablets and iPads, but not a single surface... That's gotta tell you something, right?

Well its def a start, if it was soo good people will be buying them. BUT. THEY.ARENT.

Not really. How many people here own Macs? A whole bunch of you, right? Well, you're among the relative few, only holding roughly 10% of the worldwide market. Windows PCs make up the other 90%.

All these people who have bought and are continually buying Windows PC speaking with their wallets? Is Windows truly better than OSX? According to your argument it is, because if OSX were good, it'd be selling.

...right?

I'll go ahead and tell you now. It doesn't Popularity isn't always an indicator of quality.

Also, are the forums acting weird for anyone else? I can't direct quote anyone, and the front page is lagging way behind the current quotes in the threads.

I vote for Frank Shaw to replace Steve Ballmer. At least then he can keep Microsoft going on it's current path.

Frank Shaw's comments are frightening. It shows the results of the Ballmer years of pushing a view that we're best even when it's patently obvious they're not.

If Frank is a sample of the MS talent pool then Microsoft are in serious trouble.

So, Apple can poke fun and make fun of Microsoft, but if Microsoft fights back, they're mean?
If they could ever take a shot that wasn't irrational, petty, dripping with envy, mired in their little Microsoft-centric world, and completely out of touch with what people actually want (they seem genuinely baffled that every single person in the world doesn't want a Surface notebook), then I'd say go for it.

The reaction from these forums is because they're not there yet.

"The good news is that Microsoft understands how people work better than anyone else on the planet."

Yeah, they use Apple products, it cost you $900 Million to learn that.

Maybe your new, Improved model will only cost you half a billion, that's progress.

Theyhave got one point though that iWork hasnt got all the features of Office. This personally limits its use for me at work somewhat.

Soon as Apple ups the mobile features so i can use iWork on an ipad better then I am ditching Microsoft and their buggy crap.

My girlfriend had to get a PC for her job. It has windows 8. That is about the most unproductive piece of software (if you even want to call it that) I've ever used. I'd rather have Windows 2000 than that. He's clearly never used windows 8!

Sorry for the long post but....

In 2007, Windows Mobile, at 9.6% of the smart phone market, had approximately 3.5 times the market share of Apple's 2.7% share, and Android didn’t exist. At the end of 5 years, Apple, at 19.1% market share, had approximately 7.6 times the market share of Microsoft at 2.5%, which barely beat Samsung’s Bada (2.3%). And with all of them far behind Android’s massive share of 66.2% in 2012.

So now in 2013, about 90% of the world is being taught to associate easy of use with either an Android and Apple device. Our mobile lunch truck uses Square with an iPhone. We have departments at working begging IT to allow them to purchase iPads instead of laptops for use in the field. Chromebooks are being snatched up left and right as the first computer for their kids or as a secondary, almost disposable computer. This massive use of Google and Apple equipment will lead to people substituting their productivity apps for Microsoft's when they are able to.

I used to buy the Home edition of Microsoft Office every couple of years. I haven’t needed to for several years now and I doubt I'm alone.

Google and Apple are attempting to grow share with the users that don't need the full power of Office. Meanwhile, other companies, such as IBM, are challenging Microsoft of the backend, including their own productivity suites, at much lower costs. And compatibility matters less and less as more and more business documents are accessed and manipulated via the cloud.

I think some of you are taking all this a little too personally...

I've seen a few Surfaces out there. I think out of every non-iPad tablet it's the best one.

You guys keep recycling the same old Windows bashing crap like Windows 8 sucks, and the Surface sucks.

Well... my opinion... is that Android is brutal. Totally sucks. It's a crappy version of iOS. Windows 8 is unique and innovative and performs so much better than Android. Scrolling is buttery smooth as is pinch to zoom.

The Surface 2 tablet I find compelling. I'm about to hit a plane for a long trip and I can tell you that the iPad will be close to useless for any productivity stuff on that trip... which makes me not even want to use it because I can fit something that has literally all of its functionality in my pocket, and that's my iPhone.

My iPad has been collecting dust... it's merely anything more than a blown up iPod. Where Microsoft has nailed it with the Surface is 2 things:

  • Built-in retractable stand
  • Keyboard covers

Sorry, no, I'm not dragging a bunch of third-party, half baked, retrofitted crap for the iPad to give it the same functionality as the Surface yet with worse functionality because it was never meant to do all that stuff. The fact that all this functionality is built into the Surface is amazing.

No, I don't own a Surface. But I'm finally getting one. Yes, I am an Apple guy but I'm impressed with the device. The one thing I don't like as much is its aspect ratio, but I can't have it all.

Hardly. The person I quoted was getting all bothered that Microsoft gets leapt on, while Apple doesn't. There's a simple reason.
Microsoft being irrational and conveying desperation from a position of weakness isn't something that affects me personally in any way. It's just something that is. The tone of Microsoft's attempts is different than other companies, not just Apple - Samsung, Google, etc. Being confused that they're treated differently as a result (scorn or whatever) is itself confusing.

You seem to be one of the few sensible persons around here, and not because what you like or dislike, but because at least you give some resons and you choose to buy what you think is the best for YOU at this moment. :)

Regarding the 16:9 ratio of the Surface, it is what allows to use 2 apps side by side (true multitasting).
Of course it is also is good to watch 90% of modern movies and TV shows without (or smaller) black bars.
3:4 might be better for some tasks, such a reading PDF (as they their format is near 3:4), but if the app is clever it can use the wasted space above and under the page (in portrait mode) or the sides (in landscape) to put controlers, info or tools. Or you can put anether app snapped on the side at 30% (e.g. A dictionary, or Wikipedia)

In any case, as you said, you can't have everything. :)

Why didn't you just answer his question with a simple "yes" instead of dance around it like you just tried to do here?

It is very clear that Microsoft feels threatened by the iWork now that it's free, exact same as Google docs a trojan horse to them.

Anyway, hope they take it positively to compete and innovate. Customers made winner in the process. We seriously would not want any of them to go down or vanish.

It's not any different. It's all bog standard advertising, just about like comparing brands of dishwashing detergent, consoles, or the I'm A Mac, I'm A PC commercials. There's nothing irrational or desperate about it.

All these people bashing Apple only seem to promote Apple further and it's funny.
