Have they fixed the problem where you Pages doesn't actually save anything that isn't .Pages? I know you can export, but I was wondering if you found a way to get it to have an up-to-date version of your .docx file without having to make another, another, and another duplicate as you have to export it any time you want it saved.

Umm... Try exporting it, and overwriting the original file? There's no need to make multiple, redundant copies as you edit and export.

charlituna Microsoft has been 'selling' the Surface by Apple bashing all along. So little faith that focusing on their own product would be enough

Exactly how I feel! The Surface would sell better if MS focused on selling people on the ideas it is built on. Perhaps a better advert for the Surface would be: "We belive that you should be able to be highly productive wherever you go. We believe that you are at your best when you have all the tools you need in one beautifully designed package that is portable, light, and fast. We believe your experience between working on your portable device and your office desktop should be seamless and consistent. If you believe this too, then may be introduce you to the tablet that does exactly that. [insert tag for the tablet of choice].

That's still very... not good for continuing to keep the .docx version updated. It seems like they're still trying to push .pages on us despite the fact that it's not going many places.

I love commercials in that positive light as well, but attacking your competition works too well. "Hello, I'm a Mac. Hello, I'm a PC"

Had a read through your posts, I'm sorry but why are you even here? If you feel so strongly over this then I'm sure there are many a ms forum you could join?;)

I can see that you are not trolling but your defence of MS is quite extraordinary.

I don't understand why you would join an apple orientated forum to bemoan their products?

But, but, but, why are your retail stores so much look like Apple's?

There is a MS store in the mall by my office. I have never seen it busy. A lot of the times the only folks there are a gang of kids playing on the demo xbox and a couple of very bored staff.

You only have to look at the crowds at the giant surface 2 event in London to know that MS has a winning strategy :p

As much as I hate Office, I only lost 1 documents in 3 years using it every day at work.

Office was not the problem with you, it was your PC (Or MAC)

Nope. The problem was Office. When it happens, the same document, on the same machine, can often be recovered (without formatting loss) by opening it in OpenOffice, and re-saving it.

Well it is a very Surface vs iPad article, and I come onto MacRumors having visited the website for years as a quite passionate Apple fan. Over the last two years though, nothing. The spark is gone, but the profits are not and I come here with my Microsoft flag because I don't think its right.

I admit to have some allegiance with Microsoft now, but that's purely because in the current day, they have the best products. Since 2001 with the iPod, Apple always had that leading product. It doesn't anymore, and sadly it doesn't appear they do in the their future. So I support the company that does have the best product, who sadly due to their unpopular image, aren't being given the attention and deserved commendation for it.

This is all about Microsoft's sense of desperation. The only made $800M on the Surface, and had to write off $900M in excess Surface inventory. That's an epic fail the likes of which hasn't been seen in modern business. Windows 8 has been a huge disappointment following Windows 7 and Vista which have had all kinds of problems with stability and security. Now they come out with 8.1 which bricks Surface RT systems, nice job MS! They actually had to pull the update less than 5 hours after it came out. Epic!

This guy has nothing to promote so he has to try and bash an obviously vastly superior product. MS sold 1.7M Surfaces in 8 months, Apple sold 3M iPads in THREE DAYS last November. They bought Nokia because the company was going out of business and is their only major Windows Phone handset and had to. Yet another fail. What a joke MS has become...

Strange,

Despite the fact they know what there customers want, such as proper multitasking and a proper version of Office on our tablet devices it seems the Surface 2 is Dead On Arrival - http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-5...-2-midnight-launch-has-everything-but-buyers/

Seriously!? Who doesn't want a proper version of Office on there tablet! Its the fist thing i want to do on a tablet is lean my face in and start editing spreadsheets while hoping to avoid back strain.

And dam proper multitasking! on a tablet, Woo-Hoo its like all my Christmases in one.

MS entire strategy with these devices is pretty embarrassing, as has been stated to death! If productivity was a quality in a "Must have tablet" the iPad would have died a quick death, but thats not what people want....sure they want a mild degree of productivity which the iPad covers well.

But whats truly desired in a tablet is a quick, light media consumption device...you need not look further than sales figures...

So the Surface 2 is a worthless device, its main goal is to be a productivity device yet it will always be substandard due to it being a tablet, ergonomically it doesn't make any sense to try and be productive on that thing.

On the Surface 2 Pro while the geek in my is imagining all the cool stuff i can do on that hardware and the fact its a tablet! The interest crashes when i see the price and look at my 13" MBA which is lightyears ahead of the Surface 2 Pro and is around the same price point. The Pro is in the same bracket as the MBA and the MBA is powerful, light and with Mavericks is benchmarking an insane 15 hours of battery life....the ultimate mobile, productivity device.

Productivity doesn't just equate to spreadsheets. So the Surface Pro 2 is a worthless device.

For all the people with only iWorks ... what do you guys do when people send you a .docx or .pptx or .xlsx file? I always use Office for Mac simply for compatibility reasons.

But in general I think competition is good. I sort of wish Apple had had a more rigorous competitor in media streaming because itunes is IMO quickly turning into the most unwieldy, user-unfriendly software. It's like the Apple version of MS Office ... used just because so many other people use it, but not particularly user-friendly or quality by itself.

They open it in iWork.

iWork can open those formats.

I love how their entire strategy seems to now be on Apple bashing; iWork may not be the best productivity suite, but I actually really like it both on the Mac and on iOS, and for a now free set of apps on the iOS (is it free now on Mac too?) it's damn good value. Even when it cost £8 or whatever it was it was incredibly good value for what you get, as I've used Page for both simple and complex documents, and while it churns a bit on the latter, it's pretty capable.

There's definitely still room for improvement, but if you want to edit something on the go, or start putting a document together before you have a desktop available then iWork on iPad is ideal. Even if you do everything on an iPad it's still pretty sweet.

Besides; isn't Microsoft Office still lacking a proper touch version or do they finally get around to that? When I tried a Surface tablet I could only run Office in desktop mode and it was almost impossible to use.

Why is everyone getting their panties in a bunch of this? No one said cr@p when Apple was bashing Windows in those famous Mac vs PC ads. Companies smack each other around, that's what they do. Get over it.

But apple really didnt bash the other players that much in those ads. They picked real user complaints and never dropped names etc. They focused on PCs as an umbrella without calling out HP, Dell etc. Not like MS blatantly going after Apple by name and pulling crap out of 'the air' to talk about.

iPads don't have a kickstand. Okay. iPads don't have Office or an equal preloaded. Okay. And so on.

And at least there was Mac to show that Apple could do. MS bashes without showing their stuff in good light.oh look I can click the kick stand and write my name on it. To dubstep. Must have it.

Even when MS does show their stuff they haven't figured out that that is enough. Folks are impatient and lose focus. Trim it up by showing what you can do and leave it at that. Don't pay the other boys any mind (a lesson apple learned and thus quit the Mac/PC ads)

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_...0.7.3-update-causing-cui-interface-artifacts/

This happened a couple of years ago on my iMac, making my computer unusable. I couldn't back up anything at that time because Finder kept crashing (so thank god I had Time Machine setup) and I was forced to wipe the hard drive and restore. Of course Time Machine showed its magic in this case, but for anyone who didn't have a backup? Headache. Point being, Apple makes mistakes in software updates too.

Again, sales mean nothing. And marketing shouldn't either. I absolutely agree that Microsoft has a vastly inferior marketing team, but what does an ad have to do with the quality of the device? People should make an informed judgement before buying a device based on quality and features rather than the extravagance of an ad or the reputation of a brand. An ad may miss the point or make a wrong point, but what does that have to do with the object you eventually hold in your hand?

PS: The Macs that got bricked from that update weren't provided with a solution other than wiping, and wasn't acknowledged for over a week. The Surface case was identified and fixed in two days.

EDIT: I'm leaving my original post here, but I am so happy to report that the new iWork suite DOES support right-to-left!!! finally, apple!!! what took you so long?! It still doesn't work on iCloud (which is what I used to base my data), but it works great on the Mac! This is a day I've been waiting for in over 10 years. Halleluya!!!

-----------------(Original Post)---------

I have to say that at least for me, Microsoft does have a point here, I still consider iWork to be an afterthought. It's incredible to me that even after this complete rewrite, they still didn't bother to support right-to-left languages. No Arabic, no Hebrew, not any of the following languages:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-to-left

That's a huge market that Apple simply ignores, while they make their cool new fireworks animations... iWork looks great, I just can't use it at all . I opened bug reports on this since the days of OS X TIGER(!!!), and while improvements were made to the OS overall (Textedit, Mail), apps like Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iBooks Author were left behind. It doesn't even work in the web browser version.

Needless to say, Office works great in right-to-left.

Over 800 Posts... WOW.. Seriously???

Apple has been doing this for years... Mac vs PC. They had a lot of success with this and it sure gained "mind share" which led to market share. This along with good products of course.

Microsoft is correct in their post. In fact both are. Apple and Microsoft both chose a path and I really do not understand why they need to bash. In calling Apple out, they go to their even and start by saying that their competitors are confused??? I am a consumer, techie, and IT Professional. I like Microsoft's approach as it fits my requirements a lot more than Apples. Does that make me confused or the apple way wrong? NO.

When people ask me what they should get or when I am consulting for a company, my question to them is what do they want to do? Meaning, what is their process and desired solution. That is the beauty about choices. There is never just one way. That is what Apple wants to market, this is the one and only way. People eat that up. Then there are the people like me who tried the Apple way and it did not work. My ipad was wonderful for consumption, but production was not there. I could never take only my ipad. I always had to take a computer with me... Data management, accessories, etc, I was limited. Not there are many people who do not need any of they requirements that I do. They can "work" with iOS and be more than fine.

I am not comparing a surface pro to the ipad, I am comparing windows rt. That is no x86 apps. All apps from the store. Thing is, It is not that apps that make my surface rt and surface 2 so much more productive than my ipads were. It is the device, OS, ports, etc. It was truly designed to be a no compromise tablet. Proof is in the pudding, I found myself with my surface rt only on a job site last year. I kicked myself because when this happened with my ipad, I was severely handicapped. So I pushed through with my surface and I found out wow, I can really do this. I sold my ipad a week later...

Does that make the iPad weak or bad? NO. I loved that device, by my surface cannibalized it and I really hate having things that I do not use... That is why my mac mini is on craigslist now. My girlfriend, who is an IT manager, loves her ipad, but tells me all the time it is only a toy and would never consider it for work. She like my surface more for work, but does not want a surface only for work. She wants her ipad for books, candy crush, etc. I bought that ipad mini for her, ipod, shoot. They day I Pre ordered my surface 2, we went next door and bought a iphone 5s.

I end this with, what is wrong with choice??? I understand many people do not have the opportunity to buy devices on a whim. I try not to, but I believe in having the right tool for the task. I have not found one to replace them all, at least for me. That is why I have Microsoft, Apple, Google, Linux, etc devices and software. No company controls where I spend my money... I control where and who I give my money to. It makes me so upset see ignorant fans on both sides.

Even websites we rely on news provide click bait articles... Not to your benefits, but to theirs. You/we equal to revenue. Don't you all see??? We are all divided into hateful clans. For what? MONEY! No pun or shun to Apple fans as this is an apple board, but lets stop being SHEEP!!! I am not a sheep to apple, Microsoft, or Google. I am the BIG BAD WOLF! I will roam to any of their product pastures seeking and devouring what I want and casting out what I don't.

Final thought... If your purchased or created product is so good, why must you bash someone else's to justify yourself? Why do you have to make a comment about what someone has compared to yours... Do you seriously think that they did not make a choice not to get what you have? Or that they could or may own what you had or even got rid of it??? We have to get our heads out of the pockets of companies and see things for YOURSELF. You or (i) is all that matters right?!
