You do know messages is encrypted between Apple and your phone, right? Microsoft has no clue what’s happening.
Yes. I'm just referring to having to have the phone connected in order to get the messages, not worried about snooping, etc. In my case, having the phone close enough to connect via bluetooth, I might as well simply use the phone for messages. Now, if it could do it over wi-fi, I would probably be interested (especially given all of my network traffic goes through my home VPN).

Seriously though, the phone has to be connected via Bluetooth in order to receive messages, SMH! Personally, I wouldn't even bother with this.

Works just fine for me on Windows 11, messages and notifications have been coming through instantly for the last few days I've been using it. Just wish Apple would do an official app.

It works. It's not perfect but it's good to have an option. Of course, my phone is with me so there's no need to use it Microsoft's software.

Why? Are you a gamer?
Yes!!!

13700k, rtx 4080, 64gb DDR5😉

It has to have Bluetooth connection, this is the same implementation that my Tesla has with my phone, its not iMessages, its just bluetooth texted messaging, through your phone. I assume you'd be able to do the same thing with Android, right? what about this makes it iMessage? Do you log in with your AppleID?

No cellular connection? No problem. iMessage works over the internet, not cellular. That's the difference. This enables "iMessage" messages to work with Windows, not just SMS text messages.

“Which includes smartphones”

Thank you for proving my point.
your statement "The majority of iPhone owners don't use a computer at home at all. And the same applies for Android." is simply false:

As of February 2019, 74 percent of Americans owned a desktop or laptop computer.

85 percent of adults who owned a smartphone, as of February 2021.

You can do a lot more with Android, so not the same

The amount of mental gymnastics people will do around here to avoid placing the blame where it belongs is pretty amazing.

Is this a less than desierable solution? Absolutely. Is Microsoft proud of it? Probably not. Is it their fault? Absolutely not.

The blame for this poor experience lies squarely with Apple. In fact, this might be a good move by Microsoft to expose how bad Apple is at playing with others and put some pressure on them to bring iMessage cross-platform.

And... this is why I use Google Voice, as much as I don't like Google.

I want to have one number where I am reachable whether I am on Windows, Mac, ChromeOS, Android, iOS, multiple iPhones, multiple Android phones, or any combination thereof...

"It just works." Mostly.

Now if Google could just add RCS support to Voice, that'd be great...

Own =/= use. You seem to be really fixated on this though.

Bringing it cross platform defeats the encryption. Most Android devices are hacked bug ridden crap from Huawei, Xiaomi, and similar. And Windows support would just increase spam.

Apple is under no obligation to open iMessage.

This is apple being apple. One of the biggest reasons I haven’t left OS x is the lack of proper iMessage support.
No, this is Google and Microsoft completely failing to develop a compelling alternative, and instead whining about Apple. Proper Messages support exists throughout the Apple ecosystem...and its a choice for users whether its something they want to buy into , or not.

Deep cut, but does anyone remember how the earliest OS X betas had the Apple menu in the middle of the menu bar?
Yep. Ran the Public Beta on my Sawtooth (450 MHz) when it came out in 2000. Besides being centered, the apple was just for decoration. Clicking it did nothing. Also, the Special menu was still present.
