I've seen dozens of phones and players that look much closer to the iPhone/iPod Touch, so I don't understand the fuss about MS having copied something. This zune doesn't even remotely look like an iPhone/iPod Touch!

MS are going to have to get some serious marketing on the go to get people to buy this over the touch. Doesn't look half as innovative as the iPod Touch. Although it looks like utter BS, i'm going to wait and see. Never know, if it was made to beat the iPod Touch, then obviously someone liked it more than the Touch.

In a way, giving Apple, competition is a good thing, then they may get pushed to produce something, or some more awesome features on a future device.

anyone else wonder who designs thier stuff

Does anyone else wonder how ms can design so badly? There are so many talented design consultancies that can bring a creative approach. So whats going wrong!? Who makes this stuff?

Looks like it has been designed in a board meeting by people in suits to me, and the designers were just given the remit of packaging late in the day. Shame as there are so many cool things apple is unable to do design-wise. (stylistically) And a well funded company like ms could really innovate in a different direction.

In the end quite a few people will compare stats and not appearance, so if its cheaper, has good storeage and works just as well as the ipod touch it will nab a bit of apples market, whether it has four screws in the back really becomes a non point.

*yawns*

what kind of games will it play?

According to the Microsoft, at E3 "attendees will see first-hand how Zune integrates into Xbox LIVE creating a game-changing entertainment experience".

So there will be games.

probably the same person who designed the shuffle

In spite of myself, i think its its not that bad looking!

its like they've tried to merge an iPhone and a Vertu on a budget. Still, not a bad effort from M$!

...I'll still stick with my G1 iPod touch though.

Looking cool, I think the design should simplified though, it looks too cluttered and industrial.

Hide the screws, and really simplify the edges, looks a bit messy.
Gonna be cool though. The old Zune is nothing compared to this.

I know I know. Also believe iPhone will never live to it's true potential seeing how Steve sells non hd as hd and the iPhone won't play 90% of streaming media from the web as they want you to purchase everything. Including already aired tv shows.

Never owned a zune but this interesting.

What they are doing is focusing on the media rather than anything else. I don't understand why people buy a music or video player with the intention to use it as a web browser or run some third party eBay application on it.

This device is far superior for video compared to iPod touch.

now thats one sexy device way the go MS

looks better than a ipod and iphone I think (the outside not the inside!)

I sold my 3G hoping next week a better Iphone will be announced (and it will)

Goliath steps back in the ring ... Why not ?

We'll see how David will face the situation.

Just wondering....how will commercials will look ?

Hello I am a Zune...Oh Hi I am an iPod..........?

Why.. I mean why do they always have to make a same kind of product like Apple does? That's so annoying even if it's just business. Microsoft is so much bigger (bigger resources) so you think that they do whole different products. But no... Apple is always the first there. :D

returned after two days

Its gorgeous just like at that square pointy back that would dig into your hand so nicely! and the screws just make it look so flush as if it is built at lots of bits of scrap!

Honestly this is so rubbish, regardless of whether it copied the mighty :apple:, its still looking pretty crap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NITUSfwtvA that is an iphone copy, but at least they did it properly and understood that there is some reason to having curved no screw exposed phone!

They did hte copying very well, the interface is good and it is a lot quicker then my first-gen iPhone.
But the phone was (at least for me) unusable, the reception bad, it drops connections, hence returned it after two days.

One important note to add to the "monopoly" discussion is that the history behind the two so-called monopoly products is pretty different. Windows has a near-monopoly (to the point where MS does have monopoly powers such as collecting tax on essentially every computer sold without an Apple logo on it) because MS was deft enough to get PC manufacturers into a contractual stranglehold as the industry was still forming, and worked to set up a system to prop up that stranglehold. The iPod has a near-monopoly because it entered a market that already existed and already had other equivalent products and competed its way to the top, working to set up a vertical system that supported its own products. Apple does nothing to prevent other media players from competing, unless you consider the iPod line's market momentum a form of deliberate suppression. Perhaps the accessory market is too biased toward iPods, to the point where it's hard for anyone else to trick out their players, but all those companies are doing is following the money where it's already going.

Not very pretty is it? Then again not as ugly as some people are saying... *cough* fanboys *cough*

But I would love if the touch got some of these features; HD radio and OLED would be nice. Might persuade me to upgrade from my 8GB 'fat' Nano (which I actually like the shape of).

Microsoft turning up late again, if I thought the product would work then I would say it may actually sell in reasonable numbers, but not enough to really hurt iPods. However, I don't fancy having to drain the battery just because Feb has an extra day every now and then, or seeing a 'red ring of death' on an Xbox if I get within 10 miles (Ok, I made the last one up).

Hmm, being MS's first relatively powerful handheld I cant help thinking this thing's success is going to depend entirely on the games.

If it was just for the media related stuff I'd laugh it off as a ipod wannabe that wont take off at all.. (still the most likely scenario!) If MS use some of their games industry muscle to secure game development though and position this as their handheld xbox then Apple might have something to worry about.

I hope it fails on that front, it'd be a shame if Apple get their blossoming little gaming platform taken away from them before the big publishers really got to make more than a couple of proper games for it.

What do you expect from Engadget, most of them are Apple haters, so for them it's anything but Apple.

Same can be said here however, a recent trend has indicated that the more negative things have been here, the more positive it"seems" to be for microsoft, emphasis, seems. And since when is engadget biased? Is that like Red Sox and Yankee fans both saying ESPN is biased toward the opposite team when it clearly is not, can't be true as each cancels the other.

I do wonder sometimes if Apple people ever get out, you know, the Apple forever types that have known nothing else. I think they would be shocked to learn that most compter saavy types actually look down on Apple. It could also be (Engaget) that perhaps they represnt the other 90% of the market.
