Apple has a huge market share % in the MP3 market. They are the dominating force. They could be called a "monopoly" but I doubt anything is going to be done about it.

Although Apple does have most of the MP3 player market share with the iPod/iTunes, that's not a monopoly in the same sense that MS is a near-monopoly with Windows. Apple invented the iPod, made it easy to use, and put it up for sale. Its popularity took off. People now snap these things up.

Windows, however, isn't ubiquitous because it's popular, it's ubiquitous due to Microsoft's dishonest schemes to force it down everyone's throat. Did I mention the lack of quality? Windows sucks because it can. People have to use it whether they like it or not, so MS doesn't give a flying s**t about how well it works. Now pretty much everyone lives in a world where Windows is the only game in town, and all they know.

Apple made something good, and the people came. Microsoft threw something together and rubbed everyone's faces in it. ;)

No one wants a dongle sticking off of the connector.

That's what she said. :D

Microsoft confirmed today that the rumored "Zune HD" was, in fact, real and that they are planning on launching it this fall. The new touch-screen device will surf the web, play high definition movies and tune in digital radio_Other notable features in the new media device include a 3.3" multi-touch OLED screen, HD radio, HD video out, Wi-Fi, and integration with Xbox. The device is said to be based on the Windows CE operating system and will include a mobile version of Internet Explorer customized for the touch screen. No word of storage capacities or pricing at this time.

I use Windows CE daily on a smartphone (company policy). It absolutely stinks. It has no decent power management whatsoever, it cannot be turned off, IE is a disaster to use, it is extremely inconsistent with a UI that has the same function in a different place all the time, etc.

The look of this device is all Microsoft: tech-look. Microsoft probably is overpopulated by people who think such a look is cool. Tech is cool? That was 60's and 70's. Nowadays, stuff needs to be non-tech to be cool or the only people who think it is cool are nerds.

So you can plug your HD TV into it via a dock. Could be nice, except that if you take your Zune with you, the rest of the family cannot use it. And how much data (HD) will you be able to carry around?

The iPod was a huge success for two things. It liberated people by enabling them to take en enormous part of their music library with them and its UI was a brilliant setup. Microsoft tried to improve on that with their silly sharing scheme with the original Zune dud. Now they go for HD. HD on a small low res screen? What are they thinking? You need a TV to get the result. But with a TV around, is such a Zune the right answer? I really doubt it.

This has tech focus instead of customer focus written all over it (again).

if they don't give a flying s**t, why do they bother putting out new versions? it just costs them money to write. They could just push out XP on the people who are forced to buy machines and continue to make profit on it.

Not only that, the Zune itself can't even play the HD content on its own screen, Ha!

Apple Insider said:
As suggested by the name, HD content will play an important part in the new Zune, though not as elaborately as alluded to in rumors. HD video will require a new dock and can't be played on the Zune itself.

Obviously they don't give a **** how it works because Vista did nothing but make things worse for everyone...

Just because the OS can be stagnant and be a POS, hardware vendors and CPU makers continue to develop and innovate. Forcing MS to update the OS and find ways to manipulate the hardware/OS integration. So that 5 or 7 versions of the OS can be created to give perceived value. :p

Okay, what about Apple's monopoly on OSX. It can only run (mostly) on Apple's own hardware. That's even more of an obvious monopoly tactic than Microsoft's with Windows. (Even before that was controlled by the government.)
The fact that Apple does not license its operating system to others does not make it a monopoly.

There are many hardware products these days with an important software component that is only available for that hardware product. A washing machine company with a new innovative way of steering the machine so fabric wrinkles less sells "a 'machine that wrinkles less". If they do not license that software to other hardware manufacturers, it is not a monopoly.

In a monopoly meaningful competition is impossible. If Microsoft would get their act together they could mount meaningful competition for Apple's consumer devices. They have enough money. But if they wait long enough, the actual number of apps out for iPod/etc will make it very hard to actually compete and the Apple setup will effectively be a monopoly. More likely, there will be a duopoly (Apple & Nokia or Sony or Microsoft or RIM). As it turns out, adding a phone to a music/video device was a lot easier than adding music/video to a phone. And I think Jobs can be credited by choosing that route. RIM will have trouble becoming an entertainment device. So thyey focus on excellence for business users (which is smart market segmentation, but it is uncertain if it will work in the long run. E.g. business apps for iPhone are appearing in large numbers, think for instance the Bloomberg app)

The Windows monopoly is a true monopoly already because of the dependence of businesses and the public on standardisation (mainly MS Office). There, Microsoft is moving extremly smartly with SharePoint etc. to maintani their Windows monopoly.

Radio

Mean? This is a Mac site, expect some bias.:p

Beside, MS pretty much is copying Apple, as they normally due. Can't beat em, copy them (or at least attempt it)....

I do like the fact that the Zune has a radio though. This is one thing Apple needs in iPods (it would be so cheap to do so). Maybe the Zune will gives Apple a little push in that direction.

Bring on the competition!

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. Local radio is good and all, but in my honest opinion I much prefer Slacker Radio. I even prefer Slacker over Pandora. Check it out in the App Store.

I dont think they're missing much considering Macs have what, 6% of the marketshare? Even linux has more market share then OS x

Linux on the desktop doesn't have a marketshare anywhere near OS X; it's barely more than 1%. I love the newbies who are showing up in this topic, making completely wrong claims about all sorts of things.

That maybe true for some, but I really do think it's ugly. I don't think the touch is incredible, but I like the curves of the touch. I'm just not a fan of jagged lines and visible screws. Its like thinking the Dodge Challenger over an Alpha Romeo 8c for beauty, but I don't.

Well put, sir.

This is just another reason to be excited for E3.

I'd love to see how well this will integrate with XBL. Especially if I get a special deal on a subscription like the Zune Pass (which is rumored to be true). I think this thing has some real potential to be a great selling device alongside the xbox. MS has done a good job at making the XBLM and the Xbox an all-in-one entertainment system. Now I just want some more details on this device. This will definitely add to the excitement of E3 this year. WWDC doesn't have me to excited for anything at the moment, hopefully Apple has a surprise up their sleeve, but if they did we'd probably have heard about it in a rumor already.

OLED iPhone screen??? Would be a shame to have a Zune on the market with a better screen than Apple's brand new iPhone.

I should have put in my post that I don't necessarily agree with Apple's monopoly on Multi-Touch. I completely agree with you. Something as simple as multi-touch shouldn't be locked down to one company, competition is good.

Fortunately, Apple has no monopoly on multi-touch.

There have also been rumors that Microsoft might skip over it, and use mini-camera based gesture recognition instead.

If the Zune HD is going to have "Mobile IE", would it do Active X too?

IE on WinCE or WinMo has always been able to use ActiveX controls. However, they must of course be compiled for the handheld's CPU (currently mostly ARM), so it doesn't help the normal user.

I use Windows CE daily on a smartphone (company policy).

Cool, you have a Meizu M8? (I don't know of many other current WinCE based consumer smartphones.) Or are you confusing WinCE with Windows Mobile?

I love it when Microsoft announces a product and it immediately gets a load of negatives on MacRumors, although noone has seen one yet.

Windows sucks because it can. People have to use it whether they like it or not, so MS doesn't give a flying s**t about how well it works. Now pretty much everyone lives in a world where Windows is the only game in town, and all they know.
Lucky for us, Apple has opened most of their platforms and lets people use whatever they want.

HD movies on 480 x 272 ? dude why does microsoft keeps misleading buyers?
It's capable of playing HD radio and 720p HD video on external displays. I think most people don't link HD to small portable player screens, so this should be easy to understand.

It actually looks really nice.

With a zune subscription, it is real competition.

that thing is sexy as hell.cant wait to see what the"xbox integration" is. i may actually consider getting this..... especially if they have mobile versions of halo and gears

Never bought a dune but 6.5 looks interesting so I might check it out so this could be bad news for Apple.

As a National Marketing and Promotional Director, one has to wonder, if msft started this new commercial branding which points out price, and is working it seems, what if this is just the begining? Mobile 6.5 is light years away from present mobile os, millions of iPhone contacts are about to expire, apple is more than a year away from a netbook, palm pre looks pretty good, oled is catching on, I.T. Departments have made it clear they will upgrade to win 7,amd touch technology is all over windows 7. If msft plays their cards right all it would take is one good phone and a lot if marketing with positive hype and this could spell trouble for Apple, especially if msft ties in with other touch technologies, good mobile carrier, offers free teethering while AT&T asks for money, just as fast as the iPhone went up, it could go down. Much os this will depend on pricing, and freedom to view programming in your device ( free vs paid iTunes), even a deal like netflix could be disaterous for Apple, add a good app store and msft could finally have the right solution. It took them a while to get the advertising, who knows, gooble up yahoo, release a phone and app store and market with netflix. Heck dump movie 6.5 and use suns project looking glass (where most of leopards cool stuff came from).

Wow! not

Its gorgeous just like at that square pointy back that would dig into your hand so nicely! and the screws just make it look so flush as if it is built at lots of bits of scrap!

Honestly this is so rubbish, regardless of whether it copied the mighty :apple:, its still looking pretty crap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NITUSfwtvA that is an iphone copy, but at least they did it properly and understood that there is some reason to having curved no screw exposed phone!
