Ahhh.... I love the smell of fresh close-minded fanboy.

Anyways, I'm a Apple fanboy, I went from a Zune, to a iPod Touch. I've never used my Zune again. To me, the iPod Touch/IPhone is far superior.

But... I will give this a chance. Why?

Because I'm no close-minded fanboy. I like the design, features seem nice, I want to try it out before I give my final judgment.

I'm a fan of both companies. So I have a better valued opinion then most. Most of you are Vampires, Microsoft are werewolves, and people like me are hybrids.

But... don't write it off before you used it. Most of the people saying its "ugly", and this all they say in the post, most likely will say the complete opposite, if an apple was on the system device as a logo.

Like I said, its OK to not like its design, but it isn't OK to be so obviously defensive without trying it.

I welcome it.

And also, think about...

More competition means Apple will step their games up, which means more treats for us. So stop complaining.

I said thumbs up for Microsoft. Living in the Seattle area, I see more and more people with Zune. While the Zune didn't really take a big portion of the media device market, MS still pushing out new models.

Ugly looking or not, people might note care. Looked at the previous generation iPod nano, it sold pretty well.

1. i can not believe they post an official promo pic that has a menu (marketplac) on it that doesn't even fit the screen. Its baffling, didn't anyone of their 91000 employees see this?

2. is there anyone here that had used windows CE (or mobile) that believe this OS can be used to mimic an ipodtouch and give a good expereince? This is going to be one horrible UI.

3. i just which this could compete with apple but it won't, its gonna feel clunky and cheap and prob cost just as much. Lets hope the palm pre can become a decent competitor, MS obviously lacks any vision/talent to become one.

This device is far superior for video compared to iPod touch.

Why because it will fill up 60% of the available device capacity for 1 HD movie?

I play videos all the time with my touch, and listen to music, and podcasts and video podcasts. You act like the iPod Touch and iPhone haven't been able to do that the last 2 years.

It actually looked nice here.. It doesn't look so nice anymore.

That actually looks pretty cool. And forgive me for thinking this, but IE7/8 aren't nearly as bad as IE6 was. So the mobile IE may be fine.

I agree with others here, bring on the competition. Honestly after owning an xBox for over a year now I have confidence that MS can in fact produce a good product when they really put their mind to it.

heck to this day they still make better computer mice than apple ever has.

It's interesting to see the vast differences in comments between here and on Engadget. Over there, people are praising this as a great device but over here it's practically hated, although that's to be expected. Personally, I think this is a bit of a failure for MS as it seems largely disappointed. We'll see as the release date approaches.

People on Engadget also seem to find it annoying when you ask "What's a Zune?", which makes me laugh. Ahh, it's a simpler world there :)

I'd say the OLED screen in this guy is an all-but guarantee that the new iPhone will have one.

And every second ad on TV at the moment is for a Samsung phone with its AMOLED screen...

Unfortunately the are practically unreadable outdoors, so I will have to spend the next year indoors until the iPhone 2010 comes out.

Hm, I like the specs and the look tho it does take the iPhone 2G looks a bit far haha.

But what they copied in look they made up for in specs.

Jebus.

No, if this had an Apple logo I'd say, "Holy crap, get Steve Jobs back NOW!" But hey, it's pretty ugly, but at least it's not brown. They're getting better at this game.

And another crappy version of IE to deal with? Oh joy... just when I thought they couldn't do worse. MS never ceases to amaze.

I think this looks sweet!

Good for MS. Bring on the competition.

The touch has yet to find a formidable rival. MS is too late to the game to take a chunk of the market share, but i don't think this will fall on it's face like most of you expect. It'll do better than the previous zunes.(although that's won't be too hard:)) There's enough room in the market for more than one portable media device.

Of course the app store will make it hard for any future handheld device, of any brand to compete. Apple is just way too far ahead of the game in that arena. But competition is always good for the consumer(thats us!).

As a proud 30gb Zune owner(yes, the brown one) i think this is great. I've been waiting for some good xbox integration too, hopefully there'll be a good firmware update for the rest of the zune line.

The Zune does do one thing better than any ipod though, and that's subscription music. The zune pass is awesome!

And to whoever was asking where Zune users will get TV/Movies from, they have their own marketplace. The TV show selection is filling up quite nicely. They don't have any movies yet, but i wouldn't doubt if something is in the works. Maybe even some netflix integration? idk.

btw - don't blast me for being some MS fanboy(I'm not). I do own an iphone and a MBP. But i do love my Zune as well!

If it had an actual HD screen, or at least something of higher resolution than the iPhone/iPod touch, that would've been nice, but right now, the only thing HD is the video out which I personally don't feel is very useful. Radio is nice, but not something new (except to the iPod family). The thing I'm excited about is the OLED multitouch screen. Let's just see how the software stacks up against Apple's.

Awesome post, welcome to MR

.. I'm qualified to say that right?

Agreed. HD video out is useful to some people however. Esp. since they offer HD videos on the xbox video market place right now and supposedly they are finally integrating it with the Zune marketplace.

I am a Zune user and I honestly prefer it over the iPod (or perhaps i was just bored of the ipod) ....Unless it comes with hefty storage and a low price tag however, i'm good with my zune 80.

If they get the XBox integration right it could sell well to that installed user base. If it's still sold in the US only I don't see it having any long term impact.

Is there such a thing as a fanboy free apple fan site? I mean are people really adding anything of value when they comment that its the worst device ever?

Anyways - back to objective thinking. I think this line of devices by MS has a lot of potential. As some have already pointed out the HD radio and OLED screen is a step in the right direction. The 16:9 aspect ratio is also good too. Overall though I have to say I'm a bit dissapointed as the device's specs fall short of the rumoured/speculated specs. The screen resolution...in this day and age is just crappy - everyone was expecting 480 * 800 like some of the newer handhelds out these days (ie SE X1 and the new HTCs). The 720p output was also rumored to be available straight off the device via a mini/micro HDMI cable - but now it uses a dock. We still don't know the detailed specs of this device, but I think its likely that the 720p output indicates that it does use the Nvidia's tegra chip, which is awsome (but won't be put to good use rendering low resolution on device videos). Overall I do think the device is sexy even though you can see the screws (which you can on the touch also - companies need to stop doing that). The most important feature to me MP3 player wise is storage capacity, so I think I'll likely pass this up just like I did with the iPod touch and stick with my Zune 80. Whats for sure though is that this competition is going to be good for the consumer, Apple will surely upgrade its screens to OLED also now.

You've got to feel that, with the Zune, Microsoft are just trying to keep up with the competition. They really should be thinking ahead, way ahead and putting a product onto the market that's far more advanced than anything else - just like Apple did with the iPhone and its OS that was "at least 5 years ahead of the competition"
