MacFather -- Steve was right only if the touchscreen is your sole input device. I also used to mock them, but then after having PCs with it, I find myself stabbing the screen of my 12" Macbook (the only Apple device I've owned that I've despised) only to have nothing happen.

As for this new Surface Laptop -- it is beautiful (at least from promo videos). But it's a "meh" for me. Especially at that price point.

Why add the significant expense of a touchscreen that only gets used a tiny fraction of the time? Seems like an enormous waste to me...

Presumably it's the same material that they use on the Surface Pro keyboard, which doesn't have any such issues. It feels very comfortable actually.
I have no doubt about being comfortable.
My only problem is how clean-able is?

I have an obsession with clean HW :)
I literally keep even my iPhone constantly clean. Drives me nuts to see it dirty ... Maybe I should check a psychiatrist ... :))

The surface might have impressive specs, but does it also have only 2 ports? Thought so...

Wait, isn't this really stupid? You can only run Windows Store apps? There are so few of those, and they pretty much all suck. $1000 for this?! Why does a product that barely even runs anything need an i7? Seems really asinine to me.

eh? a machine for £1000 that only has 4gb of ram, a gimped OS no USB C, if apple released that, you'd be like why can't apple innovate. I like windows machines but I would never advise someone spending a grand on a 4gb machine in 2017

For £1000 Apple will sell you the...... MacBook Air!!! That's it! A laptop using components from 2 or 3 years ago and a screen that's never been updated since launch. ALL other Apple Laptops cost more then £1000....

Just to put that into perspective for you, you can't even buy the gimped MacBook for £1000, you need an extra £250 for that model...

It does, see the dedicated thread on your trusty old tablet forum for a minimum of misinformation. :)

Edit:

Oh good :D

Windows tablet forum? Who dis? I've been dreading to go over there as I think they are going to tear it apart, hehe. Maybe I'll take a peek and see who is up in arms.

Most use cases require a good browser and microsoft office apps. I'm sure most use cases can do that with 4 GB of ram; you are not most use cases.

This is what I was thinking. It would be good to see what MacBook users use theirs for. I'm assuming it's not Photoshop and Final Cut Pro X.

Windows 10 S seems like a streamlined OS and yes, it only runs Windows Store apps but full functionality is coming to the Office apps later this year giving compatible functionality to the x32 applications, and I would imagine Office, Skype, mail, browsing and photo apps is more the use case here.

As for no pen, I would say using a pen on it is daft, touch - yes; note taking - no.

I think this is a good laptop, I used to use nothing but Apple but I'm finding myself using Windows 10 more and more. I hardly use my MBP anymore and use my Surface Pro 4 more these days.

I also don't think it's fair to compare Win 10 S with Win RT. Win RT was ARM based which meant apps had to be rebuilt/recompiled to run on that OS. With Win 10 S (or Universal Apps to be specific) are easy to get in to the Store with the tools Microsoft provide.

I know this is an Apple forum but I think people are just bashing it for the sake of it. Competition is good and I think Microsoft have brought it to the table.

iPhone is still the best phone IMO but I think Apple is losing the way in the computer space.

Just my 2p's worth

It's so funny reading the posts here slap down this stunning new computer, and yet over in the MacBook Pro forum there are PLENTY of people complaining..

Oh the irony is palpable.. it truly is..

As for the comments anpbout alcantara.. well I guess if it's good enough for half a million pound and more supercar interiors and seats, it's good enough for Microsoft, you could you know, actually bother to clean it!

So my BMW back in the day had Alcantara on the seats, headliner and steering wheel. . . It's a lot easier to clean the fabric when it's not wrapped in electronics... Just sayin. ;)

Also, BMW wasn't using light grey alcantara. . . it was (and I believe is) a dark color as to not show stains or marks as easily.

Really hate the finish on top (should just be fully metal), and the tapered design. 201 PPI is pretty low for a 2017 laptop, 4GB of ram is super low for a base model, its basically a pound heavier than the Macbook, and is almost the same weight as the TB MBP, with much weaker specs.

much weaker specs than the 13 inch TB MBP? No. Only the base model is questionable with 4GB of ram. Bump up the ram config to 8GB and it also bumps you to a 256 GB SSD for the $1299.

That puts it at the same price as the starting config for the MBP 13 non-touch bar, except the surface has a newer processor and twice the SSD.

Options:
Processor: 7th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7
Memory: 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB RAM
Storage: Solid state drive (SSD) options: 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB4
Graphics:Intel HD 620 (i5), Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 (i7)

That finish is going to be gross in a year, though. No doubt. Metal is easy to clean.

I am using 6.5GB with Chrome, Outlook and Jabber running. I would hate to see how this would do on a 4GB machine.

OP didn't say anything about using spyware. He said Windows 10.
OP: make sure you use your /s flag.

So it comes with a locked-down version of Windows and only has one USB-A port and a mini Displayport... port. And 4GB of RAM in the base model.

And people thought the MacBook had crap connectivity.
Yet some people trashed the superior MacBook while they're praising this...

While I wish it came with Windows 10 unlocked, I do understand why Microsoft is pushing the Windows Store. Microsoft is trying to get away from all the legacy crap that has built up over the last 30 years and causes problems. The walled garden, sandbox method is much more secure and reliable.

Ultimately though it is about the programs and user experience. Teachers are already getting on board with OneNote based lesson plans. The complete office suite (except maybe Publisher) is going to be in the Windows Store. If MS can get Amazon on board with a good Kindle app for textbooks then maybe they have a chance at growing their user base with students. Say what you will about inking on a laptop screen, but I think it is still extremely handy to be able to take quick notes in the margins which is certainly doable on a laptop. Besides, any touch and inking capabilities are more than Apple is offering currently.

Apple has left a serious opportunity for Microsoft to make gains in the education market, and Microsoft is trying to take advantage of it with an integrated hardware/OS/software package. We'll have to wait a few years to see if it pays off.

I can't see this being difficult to clean, and you can opt for several colours, not just light grey.

No, it really isn't. the MacBook has one USB-C port it. The MacBook Pro 13 inch has what, two USB-C?

The surface laptop has separate power, USB 3.0, mini display port, and surface dock port.

13" nTB MBP has 2X TB3 ports. One of them at a blazing fast 40Gbps. Very few laptops have even 1 TB3 port at 40Gbps.

much weaker specs than the 13 inch TB MBP? Only on the base model, and that's just the ram holding it back. Add more ram and you have the MacBook Pro 13inch non-touchbar except the surface has twice the SSD size for the same $1299.

Right, and I would rather pay a couple hundred extra (or not since its on sale for 1299 in a couple places) and get a better form factor, better screen, better speakers, faster connectivity, and and better track pad. And no the Surface doesn't have twice the SSD, since base SSD for MBP is 256gb. Not to mention its the fastest SSD on the market.

It would be difficult to have the interior of a car be made of metal don't you think? Also how often are you rubbing the interior of a car with your hands?

Heh they also used to use rabbit fur on premium cars but I sure wouldn't wrap it in that either. Plus if that million pound sports car is your daily driver and you're eating hotdogs around it and cheetos you're doing it wrong. You can clean as much as you want, but it will stain and it will "wear". They even tout it as a feature of "aging". This is a laptop, not an add on keyboard that you can easily replace as its used on the tablet.

What?

The OP said they use it so much that it causes them to touch screens that don't have it. My SP4 has made using non-touch laptops a pain. Touch screens are so much faster when you need to select things all over the screen, or when you need to quickly annotate content. I wouldn't want to take notes without it. Heck, OneNote can even search my handwriting, so the only time I type is when I think I might send content to someone else.

10 bucks says this Windows 10 S will be unlocked by someone, or some group the first week, or two it's out. Probably just some registry entry and some slightly modded .dll files to keeping you locked into Windows store. MS will gladly remove the lock for 50 bucks, right?

Totally right. And it's even legal without any hacks since MS is giving the update FREE until end of this year. Imagine that...
