I don't know why so many are so dismissive just because this thing runs on Windows. I think the problem is a lot of people are using Windows on a crappy $300 laptop or they hear it's bad. You can be sure if the computer costs the same as a Mac, it runs Windows very well.

Anyways I have a SurfaceBook and it's on the best laptops I've owned and that's coming from a power user that's well invested into the Apple ecosystem.

I am surprised that they're selling this for $999 but it doesn't even come with a full copy of Windows able to use the literally hundreds of thousands of Win32 software for which Windows is very famous. Making people pay an extra $50 to unlock what should be included by default is a bad move I think.

I also don't understand why they went with such a weird aspect ratio on the display. I think 16:10 is perfection with 16:9 a close second but 3:2? - That is a very odd choice.

$999 for a 13.5" laptop.. my gosh.. sure it looks nice (as does the MacBook by Apple) but I really feel too much of the price of both of these laptops are going into the aesthetics and not enough in performance. I am often left feeling like they are peddling a $350 computer (in performance) but gussied up with a metal enclosure for a lot more money.

The ratio part is simple: those laptops are designed to get work done and when you work (a lot) with Word, Excel and Access a 16:9/10 ratio isn't the way to go it's great for media consumption but that's about it.

Of course Apple and MS are charging a bit of premium for design but this laptop is finally a high quality no gimmicks laptop and I know a lot of people - myself included - who wanted something like that all the time. 13,5 inch is nice but the sweetspot would have been around 14 inch. I mean Dell had the chance to do it with the XPS but it's impossible to get this thing with a high resolution and no touch screen same with Apple and the MBP unless someone is cool with paying 1.300 + plus for an older laptop.

OS: Well I don't honestly care because I will uninstall Win10 and install Win7

Killing it? They're not killing it with sales. Features? Ummm, no!

Come one, come all. Let us praise the latest any-brand-other-than-Apple device. See it perform feats of wonder.

I am sure the new Surface will excite the tens of people who visit a local Microsoft store in your area. Perhaps it will stand out amid the numerous other Windows based laptops in Best Buys across the land.

Yeah at my local MS store, it's always about 10 people in there and 100 people inside the Apple Store. Always.

the problem with any windows laptop is windows itself!

A mac is a really about the OS. All the machined aluminium is nice and all but most of us would still use it if it was made of plastic and sticky tape! The OS thinks different. The approach and design philosophy is really what keeps mac users mac.

Until MS redesigns its OS rather than slaps more lipstick on it I doubt it will make much headway turning real mac users.

And I've never understood those journo's who keep saying they will go PC because of the power and cheapness of it. I mean seriously? It's like saying you've bought a mansion in some bad part of town.. makes no sense in the long run. I've done it myself years ago but eventually you come back because you just cant handle how windows does things under the hood.

The Microsoft App Store is very poor compared to the Mac App Store or iOS App Store. Microsoft is more comparable to a Linux distribution app store.

yeah this is what I don't understand. Windows has two big features for the casual user IMO:

> it runs much more software than macOS or any Linux distribution ( especially niche stuff that is needed in some schools or at work )
> If you want to play videogames it's still the platform with the best performance ( also - many games are not available for macOS/Linux )

Why would I want a limited "Windows 10 S " Laptop for 1000 US dollars if a 300 dollar Chromebook or any laptop with linux can do the same for half the price?

There are 24 different models of "mobile" Laby Lake processors. Which ones are they using? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaby_Lake#List_of_Kaby_Lake_processors

There are some substantial differences between, for example, the 7440HQ Kaby Lake i5 and the 7200U Kaby Lake i5.

https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/

Apple doesn't even mention which generation of Intel processor they are using, much less the specific model. Any reason for the double-standard on Microsoft?

You seem to be living in la-la land regarding macOS. I had to do a full reinstall a couple months back because it just hung all the time, random freezes and crashes requiring hard powerdowns. The reality vs myth of macOS in 2017 is different and many people are waking up to that. Windows 10 keeps getting better with every release and macOS worse.

It runs full Windows 10, if you want it to. Probably costs, but there you go.

The screen is 2256 x 1504, MacRumours is wrong in the article.

I was told at the MS Store that the first how ever many people that purchase it (I don't remember) will get a free code to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

He also said that upgrading from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro will be $50 if they purchase the code from the MS Store...

Why can't they just have one version of Windows....

Instead of making difficult discussions they seem to spread confusing options throughout their products. They shipped Edge and IE. They have Control Panel and Settings. Be simple, Microsoft!

Erm, every time you sit in it and touch the steering wheel....

Oh and their are a lot of luxury cars with metal as options for the interior, like brushed aluminium etc.

Your body is way way less dirty than your bare hands. You have a cloth covered steering wheel? Blech, how dirty does that get?

Also metal trim is not the same as solid metal.

It is a free upgrade until Dec 31st....then $50

95 of those 100 people in the Apple Store are waiting for their Genius Bar appointment to get their Apple gear fixed.
Don't get me started on Apple reliability.
I currently own 4 iMacs (3 21" ranging from 2011 to 2015 and 2015 27" Core i7 beast loaded)
The 2011 is the only one that doesn't give me grief on a daily basis... the others are flakey as hell and the 2015 21" has had two main boards replaced so far.
My iPhone 6 Plus was replaced twice before I finally gave up on it.

I wonder if these become available in Finland before the Pro upgrade offer expires. If they do, I might be interested. Windows 10 is rather solid and getting nice improvements while macOS nowadays is slipping in quality.

Oh wow, looks like it's available for preorder already. From the blog post:

Customers can pre-order Surface Laptop starting today in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom where available at Microsoft Store, microsoftstore.com and BestBuy.com.

Surface Book became available only recently here, so it's a bit of a (positive) surprise that we'll get the Surface Laptop straight from the start.

Seems like a so-so, but not bad laptop. Although by the time it's optioned up, it's not really cheap at all. What's interesting/worrying is how often MicroSoft seem to be able to pump out interesting new hardware these days. Meanwhile, lumbering, iPhone obsessed Apple, seem paralysed, focussed only on phones and fitting out their new palace. Not that new iPhones turn up that often, or are all that impressive recently either. The tide has well and truly turned I think.

IMO, some merit to this post. I've had my Beats X replaced twice. Once because the battery died and the second time because the control button stopped working. Both times, the lines for the genius area were crazy. A long line just to check in. This last time, the entire back half of the store was 99% all genius appointments. The tables were all full. They ended up having me and three other customers (who were also waiting for genius appointments) stand next to the Apple TVs to wait for a genius rep.

With that said, I can't complain about my MBP and iMac. Both have been solid for me personally.

The Surface brand seems to be Microsoft's top of the line brand, so of course it's not cheap but man I've just looked up the austrian prices 1.449 for an i5, 8gb and 256ssd. Why not an option for 8gb, 128ssd and i5 for 1.249? But man a keyboard covered in Alcantara leather is something to behold wow.

It is the standard dual core variants.

The Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 are only available on the dual-core i7 chips:

Intel® Core™ i7-7560U - dual-core
2.40 GHz w/ 3.80 GHz turbo

and

Intel® Core™ i7-7660U - dual-core

but on their website it only gives 2 options. i5 or i7.

why must all these companies produce so much landfill waste products grrrr !!! LMFAO !!!

Despite Steve's truths, Apple sadly is losing on both Chromebook and Surface Pro.
Even with Windows & MS Office sold separately.
That should Apple get rethinking...

Apple's Devices Lose Luster in American Classrooms - The New York ...
EduTech: What Apple can do to win back Chromebook users ...
Apple Losing Out to Microsoft and Google in U.S. Classrooms - Mac ...

Thats true, but education will always favour low cost products, a segment Apple doesn't usually do well in.

Lol, come to Macforums and I get a bunch of windoze users trying to act like the copycat Microsoft Surface is a competitor. Why do you even come to this site. Go to Microsofts website and have your circle jerk. It is absurd to a knockoff to the real deal.........

Touchscreen on a laptop? No thanks.

I mean he's not wrong. But you seem to misunderstand the entire situation here when even posting this video. People don't use the touchscreen on a laptop as the MAIN input device. They aren't scrolling with just their fingers or typing on the screen in a weird angle. They're using the touchpad for most of that. Where the touchscreen comes in handy are many more functional places like the touch bar was trying to accomplish on the new MacBook Pro. Apps where you can make adjustments, tweaks, cut, edit, turn, move. These added convenience gestures make a very valid argument for there being touchscreen laptops.

The touchscreen isn't the primary input device. But it has its use cases. Which is entirely why the touch bar is even a thing. Obviously apple semi agrees but can't find a way to bring themselves to go all in
[doublepost=1493763500][/doublepost]I didn't watch the keynote so I'm a bit confused where the excitement is coming from, but what's better about this than say...a comparably priced ultra book you could just go out and buy right now?
