Yeah, at the end of the day it's just tech that I probably won't buy anyway. ;-) I just love geeking out on it.

I've got my eyes on the next updated MacBook (not the pro) for using with my iPad Pro/astropad and meeting note taking. After getting a hand me down MacBook Air at work for meetings I don't feel like I can go back to a full weight laptop.

That's what I love about the new Macbook Pros (I have the 13"TB model), its only .06lbs heavier than the air. But the Macbook is on a whole other level of lightness, can't believe how portable those things are. I think I'd be in love with them if they juuust had another port or two.

What i7 chip is it running?

7th generation. Probably the U-series.

Chromebooks require less maintenance, are easier to manage, and aren't likely to get borked by a bad update. That's not even mentioning the foothold GSuite has and how Chrome beats our Edge in everything but battery life.

Microsoft claims W10 S will be less maintenance, easier to manage(Intune) and not get borked by bad updates. Of course they have to prove all that first. I honestly think Intune is a major selling point at least for educational institutions that have a bit of money to spend, not poverty-districts. I'm thinking private schools will love this.

When MS is saying that this laptop is supposed to compete in the education space, I think people are mistaking "education space" as meaning schools with $300 Chromebooks (and I do not blame you, as "education space" typically means exactly that). In fact, "education space" in regards to the Surface Laptop translates to "college kids." You know what you see around college campuses? $1000 Macbook Airs.

Dammit... I was hoping this was going to end my back-and-forth over waiting for Apple to update the MacBook Pros with Kaby Lake processors, or switch to Windows on a Surface Book, Razer Blade, or Dell XPS13.

The specs of this looked awesome... until I read about the "walled garden" OS. And mini DisplayPort. And no USB-C/Thunderbolt at all. I'd rather lose the touch screen in favour of a higher-DPI display. And all of the projectors at school are HDMI.

C'mon, Apple. Just ship the damn Kaby Lake machines already. I'm sick of waiting. Don't make me do something you'll regret.

Just a note on the USB-A:

I've heard before that computers in classrooms (for exams) must use a wired keyboard/mouse - both for reliability and cheating related requirements.

Could be a reason behind the USB-A

In terms of specs, the Surface Laptop includes a 1080p PixelSense Display touchscreen that measures 13.5 inches on the diagonal, made with edge-to-edge Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Incorrect... The Surface Laptop has a 13.5" 201ppi display. The resolution is 2256x1504.

From Microsoft tech specs page...

Display Screen: 13.5” PixelSense™ DisplayResolution: 2256 x 1504 (201 PPI)Aspect ratio: 3:23.4 million pixelsSurface Pen* enabledTouch: 10 point multi-touchCorning® Gorilla® Glass 3

Yeah but at $999+ how is this computer for classrooms?

I mean, at least it has an i5 versus the m-series chips in the MacBook. So there's that one thing. Too bad they took pricing notes directly off the Apple store.

Agreed. It seems to be a nice product and I've considered one for myself. I was speaking more directly at TC who said of the iPad Pro "“I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?” and then sells the iPad Pro with a keyboard, all the while, bashing laptops with touch displays.

That was what I meant by can't have it both ways. If you are going to market the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement, complete with a keyboard and touch display, you can't bash a laptop with a touch display. It's completely hypocritical.

I know people who bought the iPad Pro because they simply wanted the larger screen + 4 speakers + fastest tablet processor on the planet. Basically an amazing HBO Now device.

My US$0.02.

This is more of an attempt to head off Google Chromebooks than it is to compete with Apple.

I know this sounds strange, but I do not believe that Microsoft expects to sell many of these. Under Satya Nadella leadership, Microsoft sees hardware as a way to showcase Windows to its O.E.M.'s rather than a profit center.

Bottom line is that Apple has to sell hardware, Microsoft doesn't and Satya knows this.

Google Classroom is very popular among schools and Microsoft wants to try to get a piece of it.

there is absolutely no denying that Microsoft has been killing it over the last few years. Props to them!

Killing it? They're not killing it with sales. Features? Ummm, no!

Come one, come all. Let us praise the latest any-brand-other-than-Apple device. See it perform feats of wonder.

I am sure the new Surface will excite the tens of people who visit a local Microsoft store in your area. Perhaps it will stand out amid the numerous other Windows based laptops in Best Buys across the land.

They also claimed to be committed to mobile. Forgive me if I don't take their claims at face value. And I still doubt Win10S will be as easy as Chromebooks because it's just Win10S with store restrictions.

This looks good. Windows 10 is great, too. I like how they put "streamlined" into parentheses. I am not sure what that's supposed to imply but Windows isn't any more bloated these days than macOS.

Windows runs a ton of services and I bet a lot of people don't need all of that. Reducing that mess could reduce the memory and disk requirements.
