You mean buying a MacBook at a cheaper price. Apple is getting punched on all fronts. But they had it coming.

I don't get it. Apple has always been more expensive. We used to call it the "Apple tax," remember? You paid more for a better OS, better materials, and better support.

All Macbooks come with 8GB or RAM. The least expensive Surface Laptop with 8GB of RAM is $1299, plus $50 after this year to get it with a non-gimped OS.

So really it's only $150 less than a similar Macbook Pro (which is $1499), except the Macbook Pro comes with a better OS in my opinion, less cheapo plasticy design, and a huge network of Apple Stores ready and willing to give you support.

To me, those things are worth more than $150.

I agree. But Microsoft has had success with selling touchscreens on their vendors. Even if you use it minimally, such as using your thumb to scroll through a PowerPoint deck (which is all I've done with my Lenovo), they aren't generally a downside by themselves.

Totally. If not a full touch screen then I would like to see perhaps a touch bar on the left and right bezels. I hate scrolling through pages with the trackpad. If I could grab the back of the screen screen and swipe on the edge I don't think it would be all that uncomfortable. Also It would keep the screen clear of finger prints.

It seems that Macbook screen bezels get wider and wider, they used to be so thin....thin. Anyway Apple must be keeping that empty space next to the screen open for some touch sensors.

Side screen touch sensors please!

This thing raises an interesting question: would I (/you) rather have Apple continue to not release any new hardware, or to release poorly thought-out turds like this one?

Wow MS this is exactly what I wanted from Apple, Dell for so long: A traditional no gimmick high quality laptop with a 3:2 ratio. The non touchscreen will make it possible to remove Win 10 and install Windows 7.

If it doesn't come with all the stability issues and BOD it's going to be finally my new laptop well done MS so far

Easily worth it. And Microsoft doesn't say what SSD is in their laptop, but I know Apple puts the latest top-of-the-line (for consumer) SSDs in their Macs, a spec people often ignore when comparing hardware.

This particular product may not appeal to me, however there is absolutely no denying that Microsoft has been killing it over the last few years. Props to them!

Edit: Surprised they're going for this approach again with 10 S, considering how hard Windows RT flopped.

Killing it really, bur the Surface, because their sales are down 26% y/y

I like this amiable conversation we were able to have haha. Too much blatant negativity on here lately. One of these days I'll get around to building a gaming PC.

And oh, never saw that before lol, thanks.

Yeah, at the end of the day it's just tech that I probably won't buy anyway. ;-) I just love geeking out on it.

I've got my eyes on the next updated MacBook (not the pro) for using with my iPad Pro/astropad and meeting note taking. After getting a hand me down MacBook Air at work for meetings I don't feel like I can go back to a full weight laptop.

I am surprised that they're selling this for $999 but it doesn't even come with a full copy of Windows able to use the literally hundreds of thousands of Win32 software for which Windows is very famous. Making people pay an extra $50 to unlock what should be included by default is a bad move I think.

I also don't understand why they went with such a weird aspect ratio on the display. I think 16:10 is perfection with 16:9 a close second but 3:2? - That is a very odd choice.

$999 for a 13.5" laptop.. my gosh.. sure it looks nice (as does the MacBook by Apple) but I really feel too much of the price of both of these laptops are going into the aesthetics and not enough in performance. I am often left feeling like they are peddling a $350 computer (in performance) but gussied up with a metal enclosure for a lot more money.

Hardware looks great. No USB-C seems odd.

New OS: ridiculous. More cluttered BS. Make one OS, MS.

$49 one time fee to upgrade out of Windows S to a full version of Windows 10. But they won't guarantee the performance and battery life when running non windows store apps.

This new laptop and OS is about competing with the Chrome-OS in the education Space.

Actually 3:2 is amazing on a laptop device...the chromebook plus laptop has 3:2 format And I have realized it's amazing for all aspects of viewing.....i prefer this screen Ratio now.

Agreed. Frankly Microsoft doesn't tell us much at all. They don't say which CPU they use, just i5 or i7. No RAM speed or type. Not how the SSD is connected.

Good grief. Do you people even read? And this is just from the 1st comments page. Not going to bother going through the other 13.

If you had gone through the rest, you would have seen my ton of comments! ;)

I stand by my comments on Windows, though. Too many versions.

Totally agree with you there.

You can see they're taking a serious leaf out of Apple's marketing style. I'm glad MS is turning up the heat. Apple needs to get it's bloody act together. The competition is healthy.

They specifically say they're using 7th generation Intel processors(Kaby Lake).
