I also got to see a surface studio in person, WOW. I'm pretty sure I'm buying one for the office to replace my dual 28" 4k setup as I need something I can slide down to see people across my desk. What a work of art, Apple has NOTHING even close to this. It's so odd to live in 2017 where the roles are so reversed and old beige box Microsoft is actually the creative innovator.

It is odd. Update that Surface Studio's base with more modern CPU's and it would be an awesome machine. Shame too as Apple's last beauty, the iLamp iMac could easily be resurrected and tweaked and would also make an awesome desktop. It was the machine that got me into Macs and is still a stunning design today. Probably Ive's best design.

Been playing around with a Surface at work lately. Bottom line: user experience sucks bad. They've shoehorned a desktop OS into a tablet and it makes for some very awkward UI interactions. Plus, it's just laggy at seemingly random times. And it's big. It feels more like a small laptop instead of a tablet. I'm left wondering why I wouldn't just get a small laptop instead.

To me, the value of a tablet is the stripped down and simplified nature of it. Quick and easy access, no logging in, no fuss, no muss. I'm sure as companies continue exploring the notion of a "full featured" tablet, consumers will warm up to this but to me, having the full desktop OS ruins the experience. It just feels like I'm using a piece of equipment that can't quite keep up with the software it's running.

Are you referring to which Surface? Surface RT? Surface 3? Surface Pro 4? I guess the experience may be different depending on the product you use.

I have a Surface 3, and it is slow, lags, and the keyboard sucks. But the Surface Pro 4 certainly provides a much better experience.

You have that backwards.

MacOS has always done better in RAM-starved conditions that Windows. I use both, and its simply a fact.
running windows 10 and Sierra on the same physical hardware and I can tell you this is factually incorrect. Mac OSx isn't as bad as it was during the Maverick's days, but it's RAM usage and CPU usage is higher than windows 10, especially looking at straight boot up requirements.

For any computer using Mac OS, i wouldn't recommend less than 8gb of RAM. though it can run on 4. Windows You can get away with now with 4gb and still have a good desktop experience.

If you were making the comparison to Windows 7, I'd agree, but Microsoft seriously buckled down in Windows 8 and fixed a lot of their performance and system resourcing issues.

Ok, I may stand corrected, then. I don't have any experience with "RAM-Starved" installations past W7.

Honest question.. how will you accomplish this? It has Kaby Lake so it doesn't get Windows 7 updates anymore and it uses a secure booting system no doubt which doesn't support Windows 7. It is likely only able to run Windows 10 unless someone roots it. Same situation on the Surface Book and Surface Studio prior to this laptops unveiling.

Mmm I haven't owned a device with a 3:2 ratio but I really think I would prefer the wide aspect instead. I'm not really a big excel user but I can see why it would be beneficial for those sorts of apps that want a lot of vertical space.

Are you telling me I can't install the OS I want? :( because if that's the case I'll prefer to pay less for a system that still supports Windows 7 for me it's the best OS combined with Linux mint. Windows 10 may be great for some people but it isn't for me it's too online focused and I don't like the new design.

MS has long mentioned that support for windows 7 will cease and Kaby Lake is the line in the sand.

MS is no different in doing this, perhaps a bit more relaxed then apple.

I'd avoid windows 7 just for the fact that its no longer getting security updates and you don't want to put your machine/data at risk

You can install the OS you want, just not the version you want. Windows 10 was released almost two years ago, and it is expected that Microsoft ceases to support the older versions.

The only thing Microsoft is killing is their fan base, or what's left.

Microsoft is offering FREE WINDOWS 10 PRO until December on the new laptop.

Actually, while mainstream support for Windows 7 has indeed ended, it's still on extended support where security updates are provided until 2020. However, it won't be getting any new security features, so when overall security is concerned, Windows 10 is still a better choice.

Yes, I know it. Full Windows 10 for free until the end of the year. And after that, it will be only USD49 to upgrade, which is not exactly the end of the world. I am perfectly fine with that, and with the whole Windows 10s concept.

All I was saying is that what you cannot (or should not) do is put Windows 7 on this laptop...

Microsoft is holding a new event, in Shangai, on May 23: https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/4/15552950/microsoft-event-shanghai-surface-pro-5-may-23

This is also a Surface-related event, since Microsoft's Panos Pay himself tweeted the announcement together with the #Surface hashtag.

The announcement says that Microsoft will "show the world what’s next".

The event may announce the next Surface Pro, which may be called Surface Pro Next, as Panos Pay hinted in an interview: https://thewincentral.com/microsoft...-hardware-changes-22-decline-surface-revenue/

I am curious now.

And Apple did not yet announce any new product in 2017. Just modestly updated the iPad.

Over the past week I've been thinking about possibly buying one of these at the end of the year.

I currently have a 13 inch Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina that I bought in 2014 for a close-out deal new for $1150. It's the base-model but with 8GB Ram and 256GB storage. I've loved this computer and it was such a step up from the cMBP computer that I had for five years from 2009-2014 (Which I was still able to get $300 for when I sold it).

I'm a college student and I use my Retina MacBook Pro for everything from school to music production in GarageBand. Before Microsoft made this announcement, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I have no interest in the touch-bar MacBook Pro. It's overpriced and the non-touch bar version is still rather expensive. I understand the USB-C inclusion, but nothing I have is USB-C and I would have to get dongles for everything.
I use every port on the Retina MBP: The usb ports work great for my audio processors and backup hard drives. The Thunderbolt port is great for the ethernet adaptor I use when I need the fastest connection possible for large multi gigabyte uploads and downloads. I use the HDMI port all the time as the MBP is my go to media-center as well. I don't use the SD-Card slot often, but it's had some use when I used it as a Rom Directory for MAME when I had Windows 7 Dual-Booting on the machine.

I love my Retina MacBook Pro! So much so that I really don't want to sell it to get one of the new non-touchbar models.

Currently my MBP is at over 400 charge cycles and is holding about 81-84% of the original charge capacity (per Coconut Battery and my own observations). It is not ideal to have to charge it up after 3-4 hours of use in class and the fact that the Surface Laptop is claiming 14 hours is INSANE! Even if it only gets 10 hours in real world use, that is more than enough that I never have to go to class with a charger. That alone is enough for me to justify the Surface Laptop as my next main system.

With that said, I think it would be great to just have both. Now I wouldn't want the $1000 version because 4GB ram and 128GB storage is way too low. If the $1200 version is discounted this holiday season to under $1100, I will probably pick it up. $1100 is in my budget and I'd have to sell my current MBP to purchase the non-touchbar version. I want to get into learning Windows 10 as it couldn't boot correctly on my MBP (7 was fine, 10 had numerous issues).

I'll wait for Apple to release their 2017 models and prices, but the idea of having the best of both worlds seems like a really good option.

Any thoughts?

Edit - also I know about the Windows S shenanigans, but the 10 upgrade is free till the end of the year so that is moot for what I plan to do.

Microsoft has a 10% edu discount for students so the Surface Laptop i5/8GB/256GB is $1169 which is the sweet spot compared to $1799 for 2016 Macbook Pro i5/8GB/256GB that only has a touch strip instead of touch screen and no pen input option. And, perhaps one day people will figure out how to run MacOS on it like they've done with other Surface devices (search on YouTube for "Surface hackintosh").

Oh WOW! This is awesome, thank you! I'll see what apple does for the 2017 updates, but this is super tempting.

You should wait for Apple to introduce their Kabylake notebook line up. 2025 shaping up to be a really good year for the Mac.

2025, lol

Why would you do that - as some form of self-punishment to atone for wrongdoings?

I tink you're in the wrong shop mate, have a look for a windows site

Just pre-ordered mine. That cobalt blue looks awesome

It would be my color of choice as well. Looks very good.

But I am still waiting for Microsoft's announcement at the May 23 events. More Surface products will likely appear, and Microsoft will probably launch Surface Pro 5 (or Next) and Surface Book 2 (or Next). They may turn out to be even better laptops than the Surface Laptop, even though they are tablets.

Which means what exactly? That it's not logical to discuss competition from other manufacturers regarding Apple? Not Every thread has to have a post count higher than others because of an Apple related website. And not to mention the elongated history Apple has with Mircosoft, it's expected for higher volume comparisons in the PC category.

Somebody at Microsoft just doesn't get the memo.

Having 1 OS for Touch and Mice input is retarded. At least 1 of the user experiences are going suffer.
In Microsofts case both suffer, win 10 sucks as a desktop OS and as a touch screen OS, well do I even need to mentioned how **** it is.

Windows 7 is about the only thing Microsoft got right in the last decade.

Yes, it is. Because Microsoft announced a new, fresh and interesting product. No news on the Apple front, though (apart from Apple reaching a new record market cap despite doing nothing new to please its consumers).

Microsoft has done a lot of right things in the last decade.

Windows 7 was one of them, but so was Windows 10.

And then there was Office 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016. And their Mac counterparts.

And the Surface line. It got a little bit of time to make it good, but the Surface 4 Pro and the Surface Book are nice products.

And then you have XBOX One.

Microsoft had done a lot right in the last decade.

Highly disagree. I think MS did an excellent job straddling the 2 input methods.
