The MacBook Pro uses LAST GEN of the shelf components... or did you forget that Apples latest and greatest laptop is NOT using the current latest gen Intel processors? I suppose you'll make the excuse that their isn't much differenc and then praise the ground when Apple catch up to everyone else eh?

Here have a look yourself:

https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/productID.5102691100?icid=en_US_PC_ModA_Surface Laptop_5.2.17
Wasn't the MBP released before Kaby Lake?
And the SSD's/batteries are not "off the shelf" They're designed by Apple themselves
And I'm not excusing the soldering of those parts, just pointing out facts.

To be fair, the $300 price difference also doubles the size of the SSD from 128GB to 256GB.
So it's not just a ram upgrade.

The same 8GB ram with 256GB SSD on a 13" MacBook Pro will cost you $200 ($1,499) more than a similarly configured Surface laptop ($1,299).

I did not notice that. That's not too bad then. It's a beautiful device. 14.5 hours of battery time is very appealing.

It's barely better than the Macbook Air that comes in at the exact same pricepoint - $999 - and that's a machine that hasn't even seen an update in 2 years!

If you're looking at the $1000 price tag, you're looking in the wrong direction. Bump up the configs. It competes directly with the 13 inch non-touch bar MacBook Pro.

It has only an iterative increase CPU wise,

Kaby Lake. Slightly faster clock and better integrated graphics. You say iterative, everyone else says a generation newer.

it has 4GB less RAM

Configurable to 16.

it certainly doesn't have the quality track pad

You're behind on this. Surface track pads are great.

and it's tied to a locked down version of an already confused OS,

One can upgrade to full win 10, but I doubt you want that. Nor would I blame you! ;)

the better display is the only way that this competes with 2 year old outdated hardware.

Kaby Lake is the most recent intel processor. Don't know what the confusion is here.

Didn't watch event but I can believe it. MS is pulling an Apple Watch for their last few hardware releases. They're promising to please many different market segments and customer types but can only appeal to one or two in the end. They just don't know yet themselves so their messaging isn't very clear a the moment.
Confusing to me. I don't see the point of this device other than Apple makes beautiful looking hardware and Panos Panay wants to show he can too.

Apple used to make laptops with fancy colors too...
You know, for kids!

Only thing cut down is that it is limited to store apps for security upgrade to pro for $49.95 besides chrome is a battery hog

Pro upgrade is also free until the end of the year.

$999 sounds like a great deal until you see you get a lousy 4GB RAM and the 8GB option adds $300 to the price.

The i7 models are $1599 for 8GB RAM and it costs $2199 to take this to 16GB RAM.

In reality, these are very expensive systems lumbered with Windows as your operating system

Microsoft is trying so desperately to adopt Apples money making model.... But I think they are going about it all wrong... Apple at least subtly hides the fact that they are fleecing their customers.... Looks like MS has it all out in the open.

Right.....and that is why the iPad together with the keyboard does not even have a touchpad on the keybord, forcing the user to constantly go between the keyboard for typing, and the touch screen for navigating ? :)
yes but the travel difference is half way,you can rest your palm and still use the touchscreen
Apple knows what he is doing

They expect everyone to opt for the $1299 version which is priced to match the base model MacBook, as that's the only one with all the colours.

If we make comparisons there, things do become a bit more interesting.
The same RAM and SSD. The RAM is probably DDR4 if it's using a 7th Gen i5 processor, right?

Plus a touchscreen with pen input (sold separately), larger screen, and longer battery life.

But it's probably heavier and thicker. It has a single USB-A port and a DisplayPort. But it does have a Surface Connect, allowing desktop docking for $300. That's actually MORE proprietary than Apple's port choice, as there are a plethora of (cheaper) USB-C docks and expansions available WITH power pass-through. A single USB-C port is arguably more versatile than a single USB-A port with proprietary Surface Connect, but 2 USB-C ports would be killer.

This laptop would be dead in the water if Apple released a 14 inch MacBook with 2 USB-C ports at a similar price point. As it currently stands, it offers an interesting choice for the target market.

Yep the $999 price that has grabbed everyone's attention really gets you a crappy laptop. Clearly the $1299 model is the one they expect everyone to buy as it has all the colour options, but I personally wouldn't go for anything less than 16GB RAM and that costs $2199 before taxes.
so at that price, how do you think it compares to a MacBook? id argue at that price you'd be better off with sleeker looking machine, futreproof usb c and even though I've not seen the SSD write speeds I assume they are only on par with the Mac?

Wow. Really. "For kids." Have you seen Apples operating systems lately? They look as if they were designed by a 12 year old gone mad with pastel markers.

When Apple adds color it's innovative. When anyone else does it it's cheesy and "for kids."

It's okay to say someone other than Apple made a good product. World won't end, I promise you.

I do like the fabric. I honestly think, from watching Apple's patents over the last couple of years, that high tech fabrics are going to be a more high end trend going forward.

That said, everything else about these, no thanks. One USB port, not even a current version?

Their strategy is to... charge less than or equal to Apple prices for more current internals?

I think microsoft is playing this well. Apple is loosing ground in the education market (maybe not so much in higher academics). And an affordable laptop that is not underpowered is what schools are looking for. I work at a high school where the music & art department every year have to argue why the students should have a Mac instead of a PC, especially of your look at what you get for the money. They don't think in long tearm but what is the most computer we get in our 3 year lease.

Macrumors upon hearing base-spec MBP is 8gb of ram and top-spec is 16gb: "wtf Apple, this isn't nearly enough for me!"
Macrumors upon hearing base-spec Surface Laptop is 4gb and top-spec is 16gb: "Ordering one now, **** Apple!"

If it was up to me, I'd sell it as a loss-leader to schools. Get them hooked on the ecosystem early, and keep them familiar with my brand. Who cares if they make a loss selling $200-$300 laptops to schools for schoolwork when that eventually trickles up into teens and adults buying into your products in the future!

I agree with selling at cost to schools. But MS doesn't need to do this. Windows is dominant. They can easily make lower cost machines that would do the trick or simply rely on OEM's. Google knows how to sell low cost as well.

Apple is the one that needs to do this. I see Apple having two different products. Ipads and macs. It's their fault on that and up to them to clear that up but that's the present. iPads are getting low enough but aren't nearly capable enough. Macs are just too expensive for most schools to consider.

IMO, the vast majority simply don't know macOS. There would seem to be a lot of benefits for Apple to push a low cost mac into education. It's all up to Apple and what they want to invest in macs.

Well, that is a poor offer from Microsoft if I've ever seen one in recent years.

I'm actually very surprised going by the good pace they had, but this reads a lot like a $1000 nightmare...

Just you wait until you need the odd tool or application one day and you realize your just-barely-3-digit laptop can't run it.

Sure, I'm willing to bet that there might be a way around it, but we're not talking about an iPad competitor here.

"Educational market" is all you need to yell when you want to lock down the user these days it seems.
Hardware limits aren't enough, the tight grip is ever so promising.

30% cut is just too sweet to not find ways to enforce.

Glassed Silver:mac

Not overly impressed about any of it except the blue color option. I think that looks pretty good. It would be nice if apple offered a similar color.

Why does MS insist on have multiple versions of Windows?
Its all about options. Windows 10 S is for kids and control, Windows 10 Home is the cheap OEM entry Windows 10 Pro is for Power Users, Windows 10 Enterprise is for Corporates.

Windows 10 Mobile is for Phones (Great OS - Just no apps) and then you have variants for IOT Devices and AR Devices and Xbox. Then of course there is also Windows Server and Azure.

Apple too has many variants iOS for Phones / Tablets, MAC OS for "PCs" TVOS for Apple TV and WatchOS for Watch.

Apple just does not have the same scope of target devices that Microsoft Does.Apple is a Hardware company and only makes OS's to support the hardware for markets they want to play in.

Don't get hung up about it

BTW, All now are from the same dev stream with a Single kernel via One Core - Smart Move.
