Everyone is banging on about how great the M1 is but has anyone factored in that the extreme cooling is more likely to do with the insane GPU that absolutely destroys the M1? Unless Apple ships their own GPUs, that’s where Apple will struggle when it comes to the creative market (an area they’ve always focused on).

I kind of think it's overhyped. If MS numbers are accurate and the SP8 gets 16 hours of battery life, the M1 iPad Pro is rated at 10 hours, even if MS gets half of what they advertise that's still really good. The Surface laptop is advertising 18-19 hours, where the M1 Macbook Pro is advertising 20 hours which I routinely see in reviews as closer to 16 hours so it will be interesting how close MS' advertised numbers get to that.

unfortunately this is over-engineering at its fines as this product certainly has an identity crisis. an "all-all in one". I dont see this as a good tablet or notebook computer, it seems like its replacing the desktop surface studio. there are nice elements of it, but its so niche and seemed to be done just to say "look what I/we can do!"
I will use it for the following mobile uses:

Revit, Rhino and other 3D CAD
Mobile RT rendering presentations
Markups of PDFs
quick sketches to send to clients
TB4 for Egpu hook up at home for rendering

I know a lot of people this computer would be great for, and my partners office all use surface books [architects].

I don't think Microsoft just invest millions of $ into a new product without some market research.
This is the exact computer I have waited years for - it will sit alongside my desktops, not replace them as no laptop can.

People who don't use the GPU simply don't understand.
I bought an M1, tested it and returned it the next day.
Hopefully the M1X is vastly better.......

If you listened to the intro: The surface laptop studio is combining a desktop with the versatility of a laptop. It’s the little brother of the Surface Studio. It seems to have a mechanical keyboard. Now, I like that, but it needs usually more space. Therefore it might be bigger for one reason.

Also, a new Pen that supports haptic feedback when writing and drawing to give you the feeling of pen on paper.
And 120 Hz display. - ahead of Apple here.

Windows 11 is also quite strong. It looks similar to macOS for sure, but is still very different and certainly not a simple steal/copy.

I agree that from a bird's eye they copied the SP design. But I WISH Apple copied the kickstand, I still opine that a tablet without a kickstand is inferior out of the gate. How do you prop it up without buying a case for it? I suppose there are the official Apple cases which are made up of cheap folding material that only does 1 or 2 positions before prolonged use makes them too floppy to hold the tablet up, or you could get a chunky aftermarket case with a kickstand. But it did always baffle me how anyone using their iPad with no cover could use it in any other position other than either flat on a table, or held in 1-2 hands.
I have a similar problem with plates. When I eat soup and almost finished, I must use hand to lean the plate, to scoop the rest of the soup. I wish they would make plates with a kickstand, using hands is so 1981.

tablet is a handheld device, if you don’t want a handheld device, tablet is not the device you want

of course depends on your needs and likes,
but just a few points

Kickstand
- kickstand is rubbish for using on lap
- has usually just 1 position
- bad balance if you touch or draw
- in vertical mode is a no go

Case
- variety of looks, design, colours
- protects your device
- bigger surface to keep good balance
- most of cases have multiple positions
- some cases have a rotating mechanism
(can use in horizontal or vertical position, without compromising the base stability)

Clearly it's on the way out the door.
Not necessarily. Maybe there wasn't any compelling new Qualcomm SoC to upgrade the SPX with. Also, it won't be until the 2nd half of 2022 that we see the fruits of Qualcomm's Nuvia acquisition. So if there is a major update coming to the SPX, that's the most likely time we see it.

Does Microsoft provide sales figures for Surface? I’d be curious to know how well they sell. Obviously hardware is not Microsoft’s main business. It feels like a side business to keep Panos Panay happy.
If you look at their financials, currently it's approximately an $8 billion a year business.

Say what you want but apple has zero attempt of innovation anymore I don’t care the m1 is powerful the laptop should be a touch screen; so far windows 11 looks much nicer than macos, the macs should be 120hz screens

I will probably be buying a Surface Go 3. I've been looking for a way to do proper work on a device smaller than a laptop. An iPad would be ideal, but it's a no-go due to Apple's dumbed-down phone OS. At least with the Go I'll be able to multitask, use all my desktop apps and arrange windows as I see fit, whilst still being ultraportable.
thing is: for the price of a decently specced go2 with a keyboard, i also could have gotten a regular windows-laptop with better specs.

I gotta give them credit, they thought about pencil storage. I hate that the Apple Pencil just magnetic to the side, it pops off at the time in my bag. Wish it was in the crease of the magic keyboard

When it comes to traditional laptops, I still think the $999 M1 MBA is the best value going.

Dear god these CGI promo videos (that Apple made cool) are really getting out of hand. Did I just watch coils self assemble themselves into a wireless charging unit? lol let’s all just calm down

Dang, Microsoft is the new Apple. Innovative and pushing the boundaries of technology.
Well done. I mean I have never seen anything like Microsoft duo, two screens in foldable device, before
(not looking at you, Nintendo DS 2004, not even looking at you)

Depends purely on perspective, but I see absolutely nothing new or groundbreaking or innovative in here. Those are just slight improvements (and compromises)

For some reason, people do not seem to understand, that the tweaks and little improvements are the greatest thing in technology.

Love how Microsoft nails it with new design solutions making Apple look conservative and bad (MacBook, iPad, …).

would love to see some creativity and innovation in the Mac and iPad compartment: in hardware and software.

Kickstand
-surface kickstand works quite well on the lap, I use mine like that every day, this is a myth that needs to be busted
-surface kickstand has infinite positions, not just 1
-surface kickstand works very well for drawing and writing, it's very stable
-vertical mode: no argument there, but what alternative is there?

Case
-you can put a case onto a surface device as well, so moot point
-again moot point
-I doubt this, for that to be the case then the kickstand would have to be pretty large.
-Multiple positions, but I doubt they have the infinite positioning of the surface kickstand
-sure I'll say a rotating mechanism might be good if you use it in portrait mode, no argument there

As for your plate analogy I'm at a loss for words, all I can think of is Duh? I don't think it's difficult to come up with a better analogy, or maybe it is?
