You misunderstood that post. He already paid for win7 and he needed to pay 129 more to upgrade professional to ultimate. He's not complaining about paying for windows but rather paying an exorbitant amount for what he considers basic needs.

I believe the other big issue (so far not addressed) is the confusing tier of OS's:
Win7 Home Premium (if this is the baseline product, why call it "Premium"?
Win7 Professional
Win7 Ultimate
Win7 OEM/System Builder's

...plus maybe one or two more I am leaving out. Oh, and you can specify 32- or 64-bit for each.

That is confusing...I'm not surprised people don't know what the differences are. Remember how Vista fell flat, with all the different tiers?

Apple sells the OS the right way--one price gets you all the features (and now the price is $19.99). If you want the Server OS, one price gets you all those features as well.

Windows 7 is obsolete--look at the options for Winblows 8

You can do this when you have a monopoly, and although Microsoft hasn't been so well recently it will take years and years to replace Windows, Office, Exchange, etc.

And that's silly, because what that syncing does for me is keep the same wallpaper and lock screen on my laptop as on my desktop. Purely visual stuff :p

That is the idea. It syncs your settings. So you have the ability to jump onto any Windows 8 computer, sign in and begin your computer session as you would at home. I don't see why it is silly, I find it quite a useful feature to be honest.

Here is a list of what it syncs.

My test word "Tokyo"was the cause of my grief.
I bet its second nature to you, SaSaSushi, but I forgot to add the U.
Kept trying Tokyo, even TokyoU, but I should have entered ToUkyoU.
Similar for OOsaka and KyoUto,

Don't forget that words like Tokyo and Osaka are attempts to put one language into the form of another. You'll just have to learn how to write/spell the words as the Japanese do when they write their own language in another form.

No connection and just for giggles, check out this place name - 上大岡. In full English it would be Kamioooka, but to get away from the embarrassment of having all those 'o's they usually use a macron - Kamiōoka.

Windows 7 is obsolete....

Sorry, the business world will strongly disagree. Especially 8.1, you can hear the howling. People's jobs are on the line with 8.1.

Basically there are environments that will not allow company / government data to be stored in the cloud, especially in a could in another country that is known to be hacking into those servers. And in 8.1 this cannot be uninstalled properly.

On top of that any search you do on your local machine has its details transmitted to MSN too in order to have a "better search experience".

If a company is working with research, patents etc. can you see that they upload their data to a company in the US? I think not. Same applies for some government agencies, e.g. the secret service.

Hence Windows 8.1 is not going to make big inroads in business organizations, they'll stick with 7 until something better comes along. I know that many are now seriously considering moving over to Linux and who knows many may change over to a Mac Pro, that would be nice.

This is not true...
If a real competitor rises up they can put Windows, Office, and Exchange down. Microsoft's software is unbelievable expensive, at $200 per license for the OS that operates 80-85% of the computers in the world I can easily see some one slashing that price.

The problem is that commercial companies do NOT want to compete with Microsoft. Instead of fighting over to gain market share, they rather enter a market where competition has a small market share. It is very hard to move a standard in any industry due to marketing and commercial reasons, not because no one can build a better product.

This is why we do not see competitors to Photoshop, Xbox/PS4/SNES, iOS/Android , Windows/OS X, Pepsi/CocaCola , or the WWE. Once you become the standard its very hard to move market share.

Instead everyone wants to make big bucks by entering a new market or one that has no dominant supplier .

On top of the fact that the OP's reaction was absurdly overblown, I believe it's an issue that's been resolved in 8.1.

And while apple/linux fans love to crap on microsoft, and expecially anything that's not XP, there really is no reason not to upgrade to 8.1, it's just plain better than 7 in every way at this point. (Unless you're enterprise or some scenario with complicated IT/internal support needs, in which case, it wouldn't matter what OS was released, change comes extremely slowly)

Why is it better? It looks like Win7 with no start button , and the Metro interface that no one uses any way.

The main problem is that most people misunderstand Windows 8.

The metro interface is for tablets. The desktop interface is for PCs. Pin metro apps to your start screen and you'll see nothing but the metro interface. Pin desktop apps to the start screen and you'll see nothing but the desktop interface.

Use accordingly. It isn't rocket science. Not to mention, 8 is much much faster and stable than Windows 7 and comes with some great new desktop features like File History and a built in antivirus. And with the start button making a return in 8.1 as well as many other features that aids them who use the desktop interface, I'd say Windows 8 was the best OS Microsoft have made since... um... Windows 7. It is no way a repeat of Vista.

I am not saying its bad , I am saying its basically Win7 with the extra features not particularly upgrade worthy for the average consumer. If metro was for tablets then they should not have included it in the laptop/desktop version , and touch screen laptops were not manufactured for it.

As for free Anti-Virus ,You can download Windows Security Essentials free for Win7.

Microsoft is starting to hit on all cylinders imo. Their win8 phones are picking up traction and they're tweaking win8 to be more desktop friendly. I really liked what they did with win7. Overall they're moving in the right direction.

I think wishing a corporation would die seems a bit extreme. This isn't the 80s where Mac users hated windows like some sort of religion.

er...what? Really? They just took a massive loss on their new tablets...also the enterprise refuses to adopt win8.

Microsoft is doing so bad that even Steve Ballmer is facing the fate of being replaced.

The only thing that is still going strong for Microsoft is Office. While Windows has always been Windows, PC and laptop sales are on the decline. This is all over news sites so no one can argue this. They failed at the phone market, the tablet market, and the music player market (zune) . While their Xbox division is doing well, I believe it has been stated many times that its not profitable but its around breaking point.

Also, Office is facing threats from Google Docs and free office software like LibreOffice which are extremely capable. I will also like to inform you that Apple's market capital is about $150 billion dollars more than Microsoft.

*facepalm*

The idea that Ballmer is being replace for Windows 8 is one of the most laughable ideas.

Edit: Almost as laughable as the idea that GDocs/LibreOffice/whatever free software you want is going to kill off Office at any point.

*double facepalm*

Its all over the news so I am not imagening this up

Is Bill Gates, not Steve Ballmer, responsible for Microsoft's decline?

Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer and the parting of the ways

Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer to retire within 12 months

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was pushed to retire early

Ballmer Departure From Microsoft Was More Sudden Than Portrayed by the Company

and I didn't say it was going to "kill office" I said it was a competition. That means Office's market share is in decline.

You do realize your sources are opinion pieces, right? Everyone is speculating about why he left. But if it was his supposed failure with Windows 8, why would they be continuing the same strategy going forward? They're not changing direction.

I won't comment on the rest of your post as it is opinion based, but this part is total rubbish. LibreOffice and Google Docs have nothing on MS-Office.

Yep, when it comes to office software, MS is almost untouchable. It's seriously incredible what you can do in Excel.

Guys , you are the ones who are Microsoft fanboys. I am not an Apple fanboy.

I didn't say Ballmer was taken out JUST BECAUSE OF WINDOWS 8. I said Windows 8 is your usual Windows, nothing new here. I said Ballmer was being taken out because Microsoft over all is declining . They are not growing. For god's sake, there are reports that the stock price increased 8% just because he is retiring here . If the stock's price increased just because he is retiring is not enough evidence that the guy is doing bad , I am not sure what is going to convince you.

I also did NOT say Office was dying, i said its market share is retracting BECAUSE new competitors exist in the market like Google Docs and OpenOffice. While Office is probably the better more sophisticated software, 95% of people out there rather use the free apps than pay something like $200 for an Office license. There was a time when you had no option but to buy Office, now you have options and you can not tell me that Office share is just as big as it used to be in '99.

If any one interested in Ballmer's performance, here is a good long read: http://www.vanityfair.com/business/2012/08/microsoft-lost-mojo-steve-ballmer

I stopped there. I use both Macs and PCs. I like them both. If that makes me a Microsoft fanboy then its your delusion.

As for Ballmer, the industry loves to hate on him almost as much as they love to predict Apple's demise. He has made some questionable products under his rule, but he has also made some winners that raked in billions for Microsoft. Despite being rather eccentric, to call the man an idiot is idiocy itself. He was Microsoft's first business manager and was Executive Vice President by the 90s, overseeing the business strategies that lead to them becoming the dominant player in the PC market. A war I believe he won, beating Apple, OS/2 and the rest.

We can argue this to death, and I would like to hear about the products he made and raked in billions for Microsoft because Office and Windows was there way before he was CEO.

Any, everyone seems to agree that Ballmer is a good riddance including tech journalists, Stock holders, and even Microsoft board members who seem like they are showing hime the exit. Seems like every one, except for you.

The guy might be a good negotiator on the business table, he might know how to read an accounting sheet, but he just does not know how to run a software company . Its not his thing.

Oh so I guess as being someone previously in charge of many Microsoft divisions such as Operations, Operating Systems Development, Sales and Support and Executive Vice President, he had no influence or say over any of the products developed before he was CEO? Total rubbish. NOt to mention, many new winners for Microsoft have been released under Ballmer's rule. Xbox, Bing and Azure just to name a few.
Wikipedia said:
Under Ballmer's tenure as CEO, Microsoft's annual revenue has surged from $25 billion to $70 billion, while its net income has increased 215percent to $23 billion, and its gross profit of 75 cents on every dollar in sales is double that of Google or International Business Machines Corp.[19]

As I said, the industry loves to hate upon him. He has released some questionable products. He has said some questionable things. He has run about a stage screaming and yelling and sweating. You kept on mentioning that Microsoft's stock rose after he announced his retirement, like it actually means something. It doesn't mean anything. Apple's stock sank dramatically after announcing the iPhone 5S and 5C, and I'm pretty sure they will continue to be successful. The stocks are over dramatic. And so are tech journalists, so they can get them page clicks that helps pay their bills. And finally, I never said I hated the idea of him leaving. I'm in favour of it. It is about time Microsoft had a fresh head in charge.

The guy might be a good negotiator on the business table, he might know how to read an accounting sheet, but he just does not know how to run a software company . Its not his thing.
And yet he was CEO of one of the most successful software companies for thirteen years. I don't think you have any idea what you are on about. Its easy to hate on Ballmer. Just as easy as it is to say that Apple is doomed.
