You mean exaggeration. I don't know why some people think that just because we use a Mac, we need to hate Windows!
Although I don't use Windows near as regularly as OS-X, I still think it's an okay OS.

oh please stop it with the spell checking...last I checked this isn't a grammar and spell check forum!

No one said we NEED to hate windows, it's based on pure experience, surely from my part. I have worked extensively with both and while OS-X isn't perfect but it beats any thing Windows...believe me!

The bottom line is, no matter what MS does, they're still just copying Apple's idea.

Seinfeldism is the curse of humanity, as is Microsoft.

Sad to see such true and perfectly matching partnership come to such a quick end.

Don't think I'm lashing out or anything, but why are stories about Microsoft's advertising strategies always on the front page? I admit, it's kind of interesting to see what other companies are doing to counter Apple's advertising, but really, shouldn't this be on Page 2?

Pretty Simple! It's all about web page hits! ;)

soup nazi

They need to do a soup nazi like ad with him saying no mac os x for you.

For people who want to use there custom built systems and there dells, hp, and more.

Knowing how tasteless Microsoft does things I can already see this new ad being so painful to watch.

What Apple _needs_? No, it is what _you want_. Apple, as a company, is optimising their profits. And Steve Jobs has a very long term view, so they are optimising their profits at least planning for the next five years. Don't you think someone at Apple has thought about this, put some numbers into a spreadsheet, and since Apple doesn't sell a minitower, the result was obviously that Apple _doesn't_ need it.

I never said "minitower". That implies add-on cards like a PC, something I don't think Apple wants to do in a consumer product.

I'm just talking about a better Mac mini with a 3.5" hard drive, a superdrive (no DVD burner in 2008 is a joke) and a decent GPU (no more bottom-of-the-barrel intel integrated GPUs). The :apple:TV/Time Capsule form factor is still a lot smaller than most desktop PCs, they should simply use that size for the next Mac mini.

And by "Apple needs to do" I meant "to get even more users". And either way it's not what I want, it's what billions of potential switchers want. Most of them won't buy a Mac mini with a 3-years old integrated GPU, they won't buy a computer with a built-in display and they sure won't pay for a Mac Pro. Sure you can say laptops are now 50% of the computer sales, but that still means the other 50% are desktops.

Now, about those Microsoft ads... Someone should copy Apple's silhouette ads with huge PC towers, people dancing around with them (use empty cases), etc. and put it on YouTube. Who knows, maybe Microsoft will copy that. ;)

I don't know much about Seinfeld, the show or the character, but I do know that at first, the Seinfeld shows were about "nothing."
A while ago in my English class we read a Seinfeld play. It was about Seinfeld presenting the idea of the show to the TV station - or something along those lines, don't quite remember.
When they asked him what the show was about, he said "nothing."
So, I wonder if this is what they're trying to create here, ads about nothing.
I dunno - just my two cents.

Apple better raise its advertising budget... What a waste of $$$, but now the war has begun with both sides shooting bullets.

I was in a Frey's the other day and not a sole was in the Mac isle, Why? Because all the Macs were broken, dirty and unusable... Steve would be Mad! Freys should not be allowed to sell Macs.

Microsoft ad campaign: FAIL

Microsoft has no concept of what an original idea is. This extends from their products to their marketing. They are even going to copy Apple's commercials. This isn't a case of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em". This is a case of Microsoft being Microsoft.

Why don't they just come out with a bunch of commercials that show Bill on his knees begging us to use Vista? Because that's pretty much what they're doing anyway. Instead of spending $300 million of commercials that try to convince the masses that Microsoft and Vista and hip, cool, and worth a buck, why don't they spend the $300 million on making an OS that actually works and that people would actually want to use?

I love it. Whatever the outcome, or your point of view, you must admit this is a riot to sit back and watch. Two multi-billion dollar corporations fighting like a couple of little kids, throwing million-dollar commercials at each other in stead of snowballs.:D He he. I find it extremely amusing.

Rich

Isn't going to work

You can't take the terrible stigma out of Microsoft with happy ads. Everyone knows Windows blows. But sometimes you have to use it. Maybe your a software engineer and you write C++. You compile software for Windows because its cheaper, easier, and more programmable.

You chose Apple for its ease of use, extreme performance, sleek design, classy virus-free (almost) structure, and its dependability. My mac is just dependable. All my windows machines crash every 15 minutes for no reason. I know Mac only has to deal with one hardware configuration... thats whats genius about their product.

PC: Hi, I'm a PC.
Mac: And I'm a Mac.
PC: Hey Mac, have you tried this new game, it's really something!
Mac: I can't play, there's no Mac version of it.
PC: Well, just add Windows Vista to your shopping cart when you order the game.
Mac: Oh, I didn't think about that, thank you.
PC: My pleasure. Now grab a gamepad so I can kick your ass.

Microsoft - Who are we copying today?

;)

Well, they tried.

And evidently they failed. Remember how MS was declaring that the Seinfeld commercial were a series, and you had to see the whole series in order to understand what was going on? Apparently, MS decided to simply abandon the whole campaign.

“Hello, I’m a PC,” the engineer says, echoing Mr. Hodgman’s recurring line, “and I’ve been made into a stereotype.”

And this commercial will bomb as well. At least the Seinfeld commercials were original, if completely pointless. Now MS appears to be falling back on its only strength: copying other ideas, badly.

The NYTimes cites a number of research companies who felt that the buzz surrounding the first two ads were sufficiently positive and accomplished their goal.

What was the goal? To get people talking about what terrible commercials they were?

I'm pretty excited for this. I working in the marketing field and to know Microsoft as a 300 mill budget....Oh man. It will be fun to watch them go back at each other, its healthy competition . And maybe Apple will step up their game even more now. I've always loved Apple ads.

As for Seinfeld, don't worry Jerry, I still like you. If Apple uses him or any Seinfeld character, that would be F'n awesome and a HUGE slap in MS face.

Buzz was "sufficiently positive"?

If by that they mean that the commercials were profoundly stupid and nonsensical, then yeah, I guess.

Reminds me of Reebok's disasterous commercials of the late 80's that put Nike over the top.
