Microsoft Gives Early Look at Windows 10 Featuring Windows 7 Elements, Broad Adaptability

if running the mac osx yosemite beta is considered "rough", then the windows beta will be a nightmare

I started using Yosemite from public beta 3, its quite good interms of bugs and stability or app compatibility, (which was my biggest concerns) its smooth as butter. everything runs properly.

Windows is a great OS too, specially win7, i use everyday since its launch, but i must say that win8 was not good in terms how you use. Almost everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

1. Local user login/online user login and all the apps that associate with it like Skype or skydive got into a mess, like trying to mix water and oil.

2. had too many hot conners, that would lead to accidentally popping up things.

3. The first thing that any person clicks as soon as PC starts was start button, which they nuked it.

etc etc

I couldn't test much about stability, installed it for a week to use one app that was on the windows store, which was not available outside the store, but somehow that app wouldn't install, it would kept giving error while installing or downloading. So finally reverted back to win7

Funny.

IT is my business. And yes, there are certain tasks which I keep windows 7 (and 8) vm's for. Don't get me wrong, I love PC's they keep me in the luxury I'm accustomed to. I just have no need to own one. The only PCs in my household are my kids gaming rigs.

;)

No disrespect, but you comment came across as someone very young who thinks that PCs are only good for gaming.

If you think PCs are only good for gaming, you either just sell them or work in an IT role that is far removed from infrastructure, like software development or management. Walk into a data centre one day.... those are not Gaming rigs ;)

lets be real

One Os for every device future of computing write one app that runs on everything ios apps don't run on osx Apple needs to get it together

Quite new? It's been years now. And that's still better than Microsoft (no free upgrades at all).

Microsoft "supporting" XP was just fixing bugs and patching security holes—things that are expected. That's NOT an OS upgrade. That's like saying your car warranty is the same as getting new features every year (it's not—they're just fixing stuff).

And then you justify spending money for upgrades by saying it isn't much and quoting a limited-time offer price. Free is still cheaper so I'm not sure what your argument is.

As for the cost of hardware...Macs hold their value way, way, way better than PCs (just look at used computers on Ebay and actual sale prices). The cost of ownership with Mac is the same or cheaper than a comparable PC.

All this and you get a much nicer computer with a much better OS.

You need to look at the big picture.

If you actually realised that Apple's Business model is based on hardware sales, and Microsoft's business model is based on Software sales, you would understand why Apple offers free upgrades of their OS.

How do you propose Microsoft make money if they give way free software??

Yes when you look at the big picture, it makes sense!

I love my Surface Pro 3, so I was hoping for something a little more exciting to be announced today. But oh well. The woes of a Windows user I guess...

This raises another point. Microsoft's business model is based on software sales. The one thing they should be doing right the OS, the soul of your computer, have been lack luster for a long time. The main reason they have remained relevant for such a longtime is because of legacy. This is the same with MS Office.

I've read 2 pages of user comments for this article, and the majority of them are taunting Microsoft for copying OSX.

Ok, it's a taunt, but let's see what the ramifications are.

In my opinion, Windows 10 could be the game leveler where Windows achieves the same aesthetic nice look of OSX.

I've used Mac for several decades, and have always bought Mac because of its beauty and design. For most of that time, a benefit of Mac has been its stability and security. But Windows 7, plus free anti-virus software, get you roughly there in terms of stability, but Windows 7 still looked geeky, but it was enough to get on with life, even if it's not perfect. Windows 8 still looked awful.

But I think, with Windows 10, the level of design aesthetic is something I could live with and get work done.

Right now, PC hardware design still looks awful. Aside from the Lenovo Carbon X series, I haven't seen a PC notebook or desktop that makes me drool. But if some company came up with a Steve Jobs-like design for a PC, I would then not be fussed it I had to use a Windows 10 computer.

I would not shift since I'm invested in the OSX-iOS ecosystem, but I'm saying that, if I was starting out fresh today, Windows 10 would be a viable option, when it would not have been say 10 years ago.

I'm not sure how far your going back, or what your war story is, but go back a version and Windows 7 is in fact excellent.

Don't forget that it is a lot harder to create software for thousands of configurations of hardware. Apple has an advantage that is controls its hardware and software, there is no excuse for not testing the software on their own hardware.

MS Office is bad? mmmkay.

Nope, just opinion.

1D have a giant market share amongst music downloads / teenagers, what's your point?

And the answer is Yes.

I'll give you the fact that Windows 8 might not work for you, are you also saying that windows 7 is terrible?

They are working on it. However, if they dropped the registry and backwards compatibility now, they would have plenty of angry software developers. I would be surprised if Microsoft hasn't been working on a registry-free OS for the last 10 years. It may even been completed at some point already. It is obvious that they are moving towards that model with the .Net Framework. It is just a very slow process. They need to get software developers to convert and there are countless numbers of businesses writing in-house or custom applications that have not begun the change.

But they could use hyper-v virtualization for backwards compatibility

Yes, and IRIX / Indigo Magic had this at least a decade before that (1993?), so welcome OS X users, to the previous century. And I doubt SGI was first (if I recall correctly they had to license it from a different company, HP maybe?)

.. And AmigaOS had it in 1985 (multiple independent screens, at differing resolutions and colour depths, for applications)

It was long known that Windows designers have no taste :p But from this presentation, it seems quite obvious that they also have no long-term vision. What was the purpose of Windows 8 then if they are reverting its most important design choices? Ultimately, this is the correct decision, because the Metro interface is absolutely not suitable for desktops. But the whole thing is just weird... And hey, Windows finally got Expose :D

Just watched the video and ...... man have these guys lost direction.
They've taken a step backwards, sidewards even...
They've only just realised that Win 8's tablet design didn't work on PC's... ??
And Win 10 just looks like a mashup of Windows Vista and Windows 8. It's just so messy looking.

I'm so glad I jumped over to OSX. Yosemite looks awesome and I'm looking forward to using it, especially Handoff.
OSX is moving forward and Windows is moving .. well who knows. They really lost their direction when Bill Gates left.

iOS for tablets and phones - perfect!
OSX for MacBook's, iMac's, Mac Pro - perfect!

Apple - 10/10! ;) :)
Microsoft - Windows 0/10  :p

Seeing how ugly and messy the UI for Windows 10 is, I've never been more happy to be a Mac user … OS X seems so much sleeker, and the Apple toolbar at the top is a godsend. I despise the 'toolbar per window' interface that Windows has.

I experimented with os10 for a while and the lack of per frame menus was one of the features i missed most form windows. It really helps if you use a lot of windows over 2 monitors.

----------

The point of windows 8 was to leverage a mobile os on an existing desktop audience and create a window specific store model from which ms could contol and profit from developer activity. Only problem was that it was rejected it en masse and enterprise users were especially unhappy.

I prefer the Windows way. It's a long way to travel, for eyes and mouse, to the top left of the screen. MacOS violates Fitts's Law.

This, and having apps running even when there is no window to interact with them were the two things that were hardest to adjust to when I went from Windows to MacOS.

I switched to OSX back in 2008 and have enjoyed it tremendously compared to Windows. I'll admit that Windows 7 was a decent OS though.

I second what you said about the OSX bugs in recent years. Snow Leopard is still my hands-down favorite. As interesting as Yosemite looks, I'm not looking forward to the inevitable hiccups that are coming.

I'm trying to imagine when I would actually need Continuity features like finishing composing an email from my iPhone on my Mac. If I start it on one device I'll likely finish it on that device. I'll use the device best for the job or immediately available from the start. I'll have to wait and see. I do use the iCloud tabs in Safari to read content on different devices so the concept is useful in that regard.

I know there's a lot of MS haters here but aside from the Metro Style interface and start screen Windows 8 was rock solid. Windows 8.1 even better. And I have to say Windows 10 looks like it might be a winner when released next year.

I've been using OS X since Leopard and I can honestly say that in the last 3 years there have been more and more persistent bugs. I haven't tried Yosemite yet but I'm hoping it's better than the previous 2 releases.

I don't mind the redesign so much though I didn't really see a need for it. I'm more concerned about stability and not losing useful features that I enjoy now.

2 things stand out for me.. Microsoft is really struggling to find a decent operating system that works on both touch and non touch devices. This approach is a terrible idea..

I have the very strong suspicion that Microsoft is short of cash, ie bankrupt, the video above was a brilliant example of how not to shoot a 10 min video. unstable shaky shots, and a really truly awful over the shoulder shot.

This video was shot and edited by some PR hack 13 year old kid with ipads...Edited in some rank bloatware editing package, hell for $1000 I could have done a better job!!

The solution, recode XP from 8bit to 64bit..99% of PC's are perfect for XP, and leave this snotty version for phablets!!!

I don't get why people complained about windows 8 so much. It was something fresh and new. Human beings just don't like change.
