Deleting the Windows Media Player

I had problems trashing the Windows Media Player as well.
Downloaded Batchmod and zapped that blasted WMP off my Powerbook!

The typical Batchmod use goes like this: Download it. Open it. Set the permissions for you (the owner) as you wish. Then, anything you drag on top of the open Batchmod window will reset its permissions as you've set them up. AND... it can even make things inside those folders assume the same.

And...if all else fails, use Batchmod to trash a stubborn file, regardless of screwy permissions. Drag a file (or folder) onto the open batchmod window and then go up to the menu and select Batchmod > Force Empty Trash. This is the same as going into the terminal and destroying the file regardless of any issues. It's powerful.

Here's the link to batchmod. It's 4.5 stars and FREE. It's a must-have.:)

So far everything works well with Flip4Mac.

You're right my mistake. I have always been using MPlayer on x86, so the essential codec pack always gave me the full functionallity. Guess what? Now that Mac is switching to x86, you'll be able to get Windows Media 9 stuff running with these codecs!

Uhm... maybe? It depends on how MPlayer loads/runs these codecs. If they use any Windows APIs for it, the support is out the window.

Not surprised at all, just wish they'd decided to do this much sooner :)
Yeah, this is good. At first I thought crap, but then I realized Flip4Mac should be absolutely fine. :)

Well I could run them on Linux without a problem... I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Why is my computer going to stop working?

Isn't it true that all CPUs are RISC based now anyway?
No I was just kidding about the name.

And yes the x86 architecture is CISC based. Welcome to 1985 (when the x86-32bit was introduced)

The good news is that next year the EM64T will find it's way into intel processors, making 64-bit computing a global reality.

I think the CISC-RISC distinction isn't clear-cut in modern CPUs. They all have elements similar to both.

windows media HD

does anyone here know of a way to play the WindowsMedia HD version of Terminator 2 on a mac? It came with the T2: Extreme Edition DVD (on disc 2). I did a search on google and came up with nothing.

I don't know about you guys, but being able to download wmv without straight up streaming it is a huge plus. Network lagging? Just hit pause and wait. With flip4mac you can rewind and pause and all, stuff that's just not feasible with wmv in a browser.

This is GREAT news.

We get flip4mac for free.

Flip4mac gets official M$ support (I suspect streaming and DRM will be fixed soon).

It's a win/win situation. Anyone who voted this negative is a retard.

Fortunately I reencode all my wmv files to QT when I get them
Both WMV and QT are lossy codecs, right? So how much does that conversion degrade your video?

I think this is really crummy of Microsoft.

They are killing the ability for Mac users to watch DRM Windows Media Files.

I Watch movies and files like this on paid download services.

Without it, People can't watch things like:

Hentaivod.com
vod.com
hotmovies.com

they use Windows Media, high end DRM.

This is another way Microsoft is screwing the mac user. if they are getting rid of mac support. They better enable work arounds for third party software. AND SOON!!!

OTHERWISE IM STOPPING BUYING MAC OFFICE WHEN NEW VERSIONS COME OUT AND WILL USE OTHER SOFTWARE.

How is Microsoft screwing the mac user? Isn't having a Microsoft app on a mac machine equal to kicking a dog anyway? I thought Mac people hated windows?

I, personally, don't know why Microsoft released the thing anyway.

I don't blame them for pulling back support. That would be like Target supporting Wal-Mart

Mac users do tend to dislike microsoft and windows but the rivalry isn't quite like that of Target and Wal-Mart. Apple is a hardware and software company, microsoft just makes software (ignore the X-box, pendants). Like it or not the near global standard for office suites is microsoft's, so we need their continued support. In addition they have a pretty popular media format, which means we either suck-up or lose out. I just downloaded flip4mac yesterday and now all the content on the BBC site works - takes while to start but it's great once it is there. From my end, the lost of WMP isn't great but flip4mac is terrific. Definite positive.

Wow!

Getting tired

As a consumer who just wants to go to a web site and see content without having a swear allegiance to a particular brand, I'm getting tired of the war.

This is retarted. I've been an Apple user for 15 years. While I stand as a huge fan of the company, I wish this retarded war between different paltforms and standards would end.

Enough already!

Unfortunately, flip4mac doesn't work with several radio streams that I listen to frequently. So it looks like, I'll be holding on to WMP for the time being.

Anyone want to try the KFI AM 640 (LA) stream at http://www.kfi640.com and report back? Maybe it's just my computer.

So what would you propose? Which company should abandon their platform, and force their customers to switch sides?

Hint: No matter what you decide, a huge number of people will violently object.

It doesn't so anybody any good to complain unless you have an idea of how to do it better.

Unfortunately, I can't get KFI AM 640 (LA) to work either. I'm not sure why it's not working.

That's not all. With Flip4Mac you can move the player around the screen and the movie continues to play. WMP couldn't do that. It would pause the video (but not the audio) until you stopped dragging the player. Then the video would "catch up" with the audio. With Flip4Mac, you can also minimize the player to the dock and, just like regular QT movies, it continues to play in the dock. WMP couldn't do that. And Flip4Mac also post-processes the video, so if you enlarge the size of player it smoothes the video so you don't get the "jaggies" No post-processing with WMP. And performance-wise, it just blows WMP away.

Good idea to hold on to WMP, at least for now. Although Flip4Mac plays back wmv files great in the QT player, the browser plugin is another story. It's basically still a work in progress. It works with a lot of sites right now, but not all of them. That's why the Flip4Mac preference panel (in system preferences) gives you the option to switch to the WMP player plugin on the fly (although you'll have to close your browser first). And speaking of browsers, the Flip4Mac plugin only works with Safari. Firefox, et al, will still need WMP's plugin to playback embedded wmv content on websites.

VLC, as of yet, can't handle WMP 9, which is mostly what's out there right now. It can handle WMP versions 8 and below. And there's no browser support at all. VLC is still my avi playback player of choice, however. It just seems to handle everything avi-wise.
