MACBOOK AIR IT IS.....

...OK, I guess?

Isn't that really a Lenovo ad, and that it happens to be using a Microsoft OS, making MS the secondary partner?

I'll say that I am annoyed by the hinge limits on MacBook products. Sometimes I'd want more than what's there based on the use at the moment.

For me, touch would probably be a tertiary input for a desktop or laptop. Despite having touch screens on tablets and phones for over five years now, I have only *once* had the urge to touch a laptop screen. I might use it more if the feature was there, but the input mode for a vertical screen doesn't serve well for more than a few minutes at a time, IMO. Plus, a couple inches movement on a mouse serves to move a cursor 20+ inches on a screen.

Why are MacRumors constantly devoting Front Page coverage to competition attack ads? Can't we relegate them to a sideblog like the iOS / Mac blogs? Those frequently feature more interesting items than these sideshow distractions.

Because people click on them to repeat the"Windows sucks" line without any detail or reasoning. That means clicks!

Microsoft doesn't understand people who buy Macs. It's all about the operating system.

When Apple users look for a laptop they look at the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air. That's it. No other laptop comes with OS X.

I attended Adobe Max last month in LA and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made a surprise appearance. He gave all 5,000 attendees a free Surface Pro 3. Yep, just gave them away. I tried it out but was very unimpressed by the device. It is too big and clunky to be used effectively as a tablet, and the the floppy keyboard makes it awkward as a laptop since it is impossible to use on your lap. I kept thinking, "who do they think is the target audience for this thing?"

The angle for graphic artists is that the new versions of Illistrator and Photoshop have touch features now that only work with the Microsoft device. While that is cool, it is not a big enough deal to compel me to switch operating systems.

The Irony is I am still looking at the Mac air because it's aluminium.

I am just not looking at the Black laptop because it reminds me of an old IBM thinkpad from 1996.

Their advertising is pointless as it invokes no feeling at all. I saw this on another site and watched it before i knew what it was. My mind completely blanked the other laptop out.

This is my Apple Indoctrination perhaps but someone perhaps needs to think about the consequences of showing another product at all. Probably why Apple don't do it.

Focus on your products strengths don't try and compare or bash others.

For example: if I had just bought an air recently - Microsoft are basically saying to me "Ha you are an idiot." And all that does is bolster the idea that Microsoft are arses.

In the UK we had 2 Lawnmower companies do it. Qualcast(normal) and Flymo(hover)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IARuRMLIAU

All it did was promote Flymo... They loved it.

Those who cant compete and are taken to the cleaners are the ones who indulges in such practice of mocking and comparing as deep down they know that ...they just cant compete..
It's almost as if everyone here who keeps mocking Microsoft (and Samsung, for that matter) for comparing themselves to Apple - everyone who says that's a pathetic sign of desperation - has completely forgotten the long-running "Get a Mac" campaign with Justin Long and John Hodgman.

This Microsoft ad was pretty good. I'm a die-hard Mac user (since '95) who just bought a Surface Pro 3 because I got tired of waiting for Apple to create a tablet that runs full Photoshop, so I'd say Microsoft can compete. Or in my case, it can coexist with my brand new iMac. With Adobe cc they coexist seamlessly.

Apple's 10-second commercial response - shows both machines:

Voiceover: "The MacBook Air runs OS X and, if you really want to, Windows 8. The other machine only runs Windows 8. Any questions? Didn't think so."

That is a really cool ad! I don't see me ever wanting this product.. lol but I good effort Microsoft!

What makes you think they're going after people who already buy Macs? My guess is the target audience for this is someone who's in the market for their first computer.

I think it's very nice for graphic artists to draw with... but when I played with it the stylus was very laggy. If it's not as slick as Wacom Cintiq it's not worth using.

As for the 5000 devices. Adobe didn't give them away of course. Microsoft did. Adobe certainly didn't pay a penny for them.

The Yoga 3 has poor battery life, abysmal performance, and runs hot. No the MBA can't go in tent mode, but it really is the best consumer laptop.

It's a click bait right? Half the posts will be about how Apple used to attack Microsoft and how Microsoft is now copying Apple, and who is copying who first, blah blah blah...

Talking of the actual product is by the wayside these days in MR.

It's MBA for me, by the way....

And then they realize there's nothing inherently better about either OS...

Ah Lenovo...

£2400 Lenovo X1 Carbon Windows 8.1, hdpi screen bought for my business with the Business Pro docking station.

Result: Dock has a firmware bug where it fails to recognise the ethernet, and involves a power down & unplug of power cables on the laptop & the dock. This happens several times a week. Known bug to Lenovo for nearly 1 year! NO FIX.

Plug in an external monitor to appreciate the joke of windows hdpi scaling. It simply does not work.

Conclusion?: No thanks.

only if windows 8 wasn't such a confusing OS. hopefully windows 10 will be better.

Nah, more like a quarter. Another quarter will be attacking the ad itself. The third quarter will be people explaining about how it is irrelevant.

And in those posts, a huge portion will be attacking Windows for some reason (usually without reason)

Microsoft first highlights the thickness of both devices, showing that the MacBook Air is 17mm thick while the Yoga 3 Pro measures in at 13mm thick.

And here we thought Jony was the only one obsessing over thinner products.

I think we all know that the Yoga 3 Pro is littered with problems AND if you get one, then you have to use Windows...Yuck...

Now that being said, I still think this is a pretty good ad for MSFT.

Usually it's:

1st Quarter: Company's ads attacks Apple and MR revolts
2nd Quarter: Company releases product with more "features"
3rd Quarter: MR explaining how it's irrelevant
4th Quarter: Praying for an updated model generation that fits your operability and upgrade standards.

Can I ask you - have you tried using photoshop on the Surface Pro 3? Can you do detailed designing and changes on the tablet as touch screen or do you need to use a mouse for it?

It would be great if Apple can let the iPad's run full photoshop, its easier for my designers when they are out and about and have to do quick design changes on the fly...

What is your experience ?
