Grateful for the basic editing & simply love the direction where Microsoft is headed.

Still hate the subscription model though. I gladly pay reasonable money upfront for all of my software, but I just don't want ANOTHER subscription in my life! Getting sick of all these payments left and right! :(

Oh, shut up and die, Microsoft. No one likes you.

So that's why millions of people are using their subscription service for Office. That's why enough people bought the Surface line to almost have a billion in revenue. I could go on, but I think you get the point.

This, like most things on the iPhone, is geared towards the masses. Basic free functionality. Probably not for mission critical work. I seriously don't think the masses aren't doing pivot tables on their iPhone. I could be wrong, but...

Besides, you said yourself, you have other avenues for basic and other features.

I just don't see a downside to offering more to consumers for free. Especially since it's just one more step to removing ecosystem barriers. Just makes all my tech a wee bit more compatible. I call it a win/win.

True indeed, no downside at all, I may have worded my sentences a bit unluckily there.

I just find that the move at this scale makes not too much sense, but indeed, it doesn't hurt to add it.

Why would I want such a limited Office experience?

It's obviously not meant for you. App creators don't expect everyone to use all their apps. Can you imagine if everyone was expected to have every app created on all their devices? Apps are created for those that find a value in them, not everyone.

I don't see any option to use existing documents stored in iCloud. It appears to be DropBox and OneDrive based only.

I think this is great. In fact, I think it's kinda huge. This helps the IOS system quite a bit. Sure, for younger people who already use iWork, or Google Docs, or Quip, or whatever, this isn't much of a game changer, but for us older folks, this is simply a HUGE advantage.

You can certainly distinguish the younger people here from those that need MS Office to put food on the table.

One day you kiddies will find out that iWork will get you laughed out of the office. And if you send your colleagues a spreadsheet done in "Numbers" well, you might get laughed out for good. :)

Some of you might get through college by converting your Pages docs to Word if they're simple enough but eventually you'll have to get on board with the rest of the world when you get jobs that require document collaboration.

And enough with this anti-subscription nonsense. The 1TB cloud space is worth the fee alone. (Particularly for iPads with puny storage).

I'm still not able to get Word for the iPhone. Any suggestions?

Go back to page 1 of this thread, to the original post. Click on the link at the bottom of the post for Word. Click on the Buy Now link at the top of the page that comes up and it will take you to the Word app in App Store.

You're using spreadsheets wrong if all you need is a table... if you're using a spreadsheet, you should have formulas, which the tables in Pages / Keynote don't support.

As I recall, there were a few functions that Numbers lacked that I needed to use Excel for... and Excel was able to handle more complicated graph options (although Numbers certainly produces much better looking graphs, even if it can only handle simpler options.)

And that is why I said "I myself never need to use" ;) The only thing I would ever use it for now is for mail merging and that can be done within the Pages app.

You're using spreadsheets wrong

You're interpreting wrong ;)

Well done Microsoft !! What with this and also the unlimited OneDrive !! You are getting back on form again !

Oh, shut up and die, Microsoft. No one likes you.

Microsoft remains a key force in software. Office is still #1 and an industry standard, Windows is still the world's most popular operating system. In Enterprise, Microsoft Dynamics is a key player in CRM and sales market.

Windows Phone is gaining market share.

A lot of people LOVE microsoft, and cant' stand Apple. To each their own.

Can I use the apps without a Microsoft account or logging into something?

I will not use any apps that want me to create accounts, leave me alone with those stupid accounts.

I don't see any option to use existing documents stored in iCloud. It appears to be DropBox and OneDrive based only.

Yeah, I noticed that too.
This is rather a deal breaker for me.
Why Dropbox and not iCloud?

Awesome!
I couldn't stand the default doc viewer that comes with iOS, and I couldn't stand the fact that Microsoft would charge only to view a file.

I'm guessing this means not very many iOS users were paying for the subscription?

My guess is that it means the opposite. Note that Microsoft has now released several versions of Office for iPad, and now Office for iPhone before equivalent versions for Android or even Windows Phone. Clearly they are placing iOS support at a high priority.
